Slightly amusingly the new government AI for the Civil Service is being called "Humphrey".

It does actually sound quite useful, imo. Could save money, though not sure about a projected 45 billion...

SerendipityJane · 21/01/2025 10:49

Just posted in another thread that shares in straight white men are going through the roof.

Which is a PMK here ...

The WHO withdrawal - is that a nod to the Covid deniers? And how do you marry that with the antivaxxers being the same typically, and your own big business mindset Pfizer etc. And the fact that if people stop vaccinating their kids and you have no free health care, you will be utterly screwed. So many contradictions to my mind.

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 10:58

The US profited massively from Covid. It is when the Amazons and the tech stocks really came into their own and the streaming etc. And now they are benefiting even more, as the electorate is dumb after Covid.
Who would have thought that Covid led to the great American revival.

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 11:01

The revival of the MALE. Fascinating. They did not even have to go to an actual war. It is all an online war.

Gladhanded by some women. Old school real women too.

My Clyde cat's name unfortunately seems to have been pinched by the internet so I am sulking.

Regarding last summer’s riots, I was very pleased they cracked down on it quickly, because law & order had to be restored. But it is inevitable now, is it not, that some of them will be pardoned, early release? And how will that be managed?

I don't think it's inevitable at all. A crime is a crime is a crime. 'The meanie government people didn't tell me it wasn't Muslims' is not a defence in law. Though Chris Philps and Saint Kemi would like it to be.

SerendipityJane · 21/01/2025 11:42

Just commented on the Musk salute thread that new Tesla owners are definitely on my judgey list.

On what grounds would any of them be pardoned? I don't understand?

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 11:57

@pointythings - the law is the law and if there is new evidence that the judge has not considered originally, then there is a right of appeal, in some cases. So is there new evidence, will there be new evidence?

In general you can only appeal the sentence. It's rare to have the verdict overturned.

And you don't get compensation for wrongful conviction anyway.

Do you think there is new evidence? Does anyone think there is new evidence? Or is it a wisp of nothing that apologists are desperately grasping at?

New evidence about what?

I am sorry Araminta, but this all sounds bonkers tbh. The evidence in the Rudakubana case has no bearing on the cases of the people who rioted and/or incited riot. Why would it?

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 12:04

They were fast tracked and advised to plead guilty and the prisons are too full. It is kind of obvious that some legal loopholes will be found to release some of them early.

countrygirl99 · 21/01/2025 12:06

Early release on licence is not the same as a pardon. There has to be new evidence for that.

Notonthestairs · 21/01/2025 12:07

Eh? they will be assessed for early release in the same way other prisoners will be.
The advice to plead guilty will likely been because lots of them filmed themselves or were caught on body cams.

That is a completely different issue to what you were just saying about new evidence. What did you mean by that?

bombastix · 21/01/2025 12:08

Bloody hell the law on pardons is insanely tough. Likewise compensation or case review. All absolutely tightened by the Grayling reforms. You've got more chance of Elon Musk skipping down the street holding Jeremy Corbyn's hand.

Now there's an image I can't get out of my head Grin

PickAChew · 21/01/2025 12:11

Would any of that "new evidence" relate to offences like attacking buses with terrified passengers on them, chucking rocks at police or torching police stations? If not, why should there be any prospect of a pardon for any of these people?

bombastix · 21/01/2025 12:13

Look they don't have a cat in hell's chance of getting pardoned. This is very very very hard to get.

BIossomtoes · 21/01/2025 12:14

Somebody seems to have got carried away by the wave of pardons on the other side of the pond yesterday.
