In a way, good.

Either guilty is guilty regardless of wealth.

Or guilty is as guilty as you can afford.

This is one clear chance for the UK to show the world - and more importantly itself - that it's the former, not the latter.

If it turns out that shed loads of money can be clearly seen to buy a court then we have all been fed a load of bollocks about the law we are supposed to obey.

I realise that may sound odd, but asymmetric warfare does work two ways. Call it judo.

My first thought was - ‘makes no difference who funds his appeal, guilty is guilty, and he did it’. But you are correct. It must be seen to be impartial here. Could Musk have possibly made it harder for the little scrote?

I really would like to see growth opportunities and infrastructure in other parts of the country to create jobs there long term as well. London is too expensive and polluted already. By all means expand one airport, but several. Makes zero sense to me (although don’t know the details).

We have some of the best universities in the world so why can’t we compete on knowledge in certain areas at least. Imagine if we could come up with the Iris technology (just as a pie in the sky) to make online access completely secure and always age linked (sure there are a million reasons as to why cameras are not ready) but there must be stuff people in our universities/tech sector can work on. Or let’s say sustainable vegetarian food sources, or the lab grown food. There are lots of growth areas really.

For cyber security, surely stuff can be done to stop the dissemination of misinformation by known actors? Can we not just change the laws now so those social media giants simply have to comply? Just have a list of people like Tate/Robinson etc and it becomes illegal to disseminate? Like what they do with freezing assets of Russians. All of this can be done. Once someone has been in prison the law just needs updating.

I was listening to Katy Amess speaking on the radio just now. She and her family have been pressing for an inquiry into the failings that led to her father being killed, which involve the failure of Prevent. Sunak and Cleverley refused to meet with them to discuss this.

I hope Starmer and Cooper do something to help.

Really? That is awful.

Reminds me to call my local "The Begging Fox" ...

That's so funny @SerendipityJane we just finished watching Victoria where he plays Lord Palmerston. He's not exactly a great actor - he pretty much played himself from what I could tell.

Edited

He used to be seriously good looking. Sadly age and bitterness have robbed him of that.

Now you can't go body shaming, @PandoraSox 😭

(though this isn't style and beauty and some people need to learn about shame)

PandoraSox · 21/01/2025 22:22

Poor Musk. I hope it doesn't dent his ego.

Evenstar · 21/01/2025 22:44

Is anyone watching Newsnight? Victoria Derbyshire is trying to interview the Qanon Shaman, he’s totally mad 😮 to think 1,500 people like him are on the streets and he says he’s already been out and bought guns

DuncinToffee · 21/01/2025 23:47

They say that by the age of 40 you have the face you deserve.

Piggywaspushed · 22/01/2025 06:40

On a tiny positive note, one of the Capitol rioters refused her pardon, recognising what they all did was very wrong.

Zonder · 22/01/2025 07:19

Wow @Piggywaspushed that's actually amazing.

That's really good to hear. Much respect to her.

However it's those people who actually wouldn't be a problem of pardoned because they won't repeat their offence.

It's the ones pardoned who believe they were wrongly convicted for their actions that are the cause for concern.

I am more interested in Trump and trade. There is an opportunity here for the UK and we should be pursuing it.

The reality is that the EU or China are nowhere near as engaged with us on trade. Both need addressing, but we need to get on and get a deal with the US. That's the tariff protection and security available. We are actually better placed to do this than most countries.

No we should not be, the downside of any deal is lowering of food standards and that would then mean problems exporting into the EU, there is also access to Healthcare.

What exactly will be selling into the US that we don't already?

Trump wont introduce high tariffs, thats inflationary and will mean US services/products will be hit in return.

e,g Boeing is already in deep trouble.

Security? ha ha You think Trump will honour article 5? lets wait and see what he does with Ukraine and NATO first before rushing in to sup with the Devil?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/01/2025 08:46

Couldn't agree more with this. The additives permitted (ignored) in US foodstuffs are far in excess of those in the UK.

Notonthestairs · 22/01/2025 08:47

Yes sector specific deals might be reached with the US but they will still be looking for opportunities for their pharmaceutical (NHS price deals) and farming (chlorinated chicken) industries.

And a greater access given to US farmers will impact UK-EU agreements. There needs to be consistency of standards.

If Labour forge closer ties with the USA, i'll feel i may as well of voted Reform, even the Tories stopped shy of trade deals with the US.

Trump will prove to be no friend of Europe... how on earth can we even consider trade deals when he has threatened to take Greenland from another European NATO member???

As their new Sec of State said "the test will be - Does it benefit the US? If not, wont happen" or words to that effect.

Who exactly he means by the US is another matter.....
