I’ve a feeling we are being gaslit but it isn’t by you.

I know we aren’t supposed to accuse people of being bots, but my theory is there are a lot of Musk/Tate fanboys posting. I was out at a local heritage centre this morning and they had a small display about the Holocaust aimed at children and one of the points was that for genocide to occur ordinary people had to believe propaganda.

I’m getting to the point where I’m just about done with MN. Political threads are getting as bad as X.

And now we have a thread suggesting that the UK would be keen to become part of the USA as there's so much support here for Trump. It's just fucking unbelievable. But apparently I'm a liar and a gaslighter, so what would I know? 😡😡

They are trying to discredit those who are fighting back to make themselves seem more credible. It's a tack as old as time, The people to convince are not those posting the rubbish, but the lurkers who are reading, we do that by being honest, backing up our arguments and pointing out the gaslighting etc. Stay strong, we need each other.

Araminta1003 · 27/01/2025 14:16

I actually thought things would get better now. It’s been years since Brexit, 4 years since Covid. How long does it typically take after a world event like Covid until people are hopeful again and stop just blaming others? We have had the wars already. At some point, things turn surely? When did things turn after the Second World War?

Badenoch was questioned at the Covid 19 Inquiry today

https://www.politics.co.uk/news/2025/01/27/badenoch-suggests-misinformation-on-x-less-worrying-than-that-shared-on-family-whatsapp-groups/

Kemi Badenoch has told the UK Covid-19 Inquiry she is “less worried” about misinformation spread on social media sites such as X/Twitter than that shared on private WhatsApp groups.

The Conservative leader was questioned by Hugo Keith KC, counsel for the Covid inquiry, about the “prevalence” of misinformation and disinformation promulgated during the pandemic and whether there is a limit on what central government can do to counter it.

I'd like to know what name the poster who levelled that accusation at me was posting under last July when she allegedly saw those numerous threads. Of course she was enthusiastically backed up by a regular poster who's made no secret of the fact that she wants certain people off the site.

Badenoch really is an inadequate lightweight. She isn't going to make inroads into the growing Reform vote.

Willowkins · 27/01/2025 14:52

It very worrying that so many of the owners of social media platforms are Trump's mates. But individuals also have to be made accountable for what they say online.

Maybe we should all name change.

@BIossomtoes I am almost done too. Let MN become an echo chamber of those determined to talk everything down, racists and the far-right who are increasingly creeping in, but are seemingly welcome.

I am running out of energy to argue with them, it is such a waste of time.

PandoraSox · 27/01/2025 15:45

@ilovesooty and @l1ttledrummergirl you have both taken a bashing over the last day or two. Hope you are OK.

Yes you really have & all the other fabulous stalwarts I salute you.
I find it really difficult as it takes me a long time to compose a post & not get my facts muddled up (it’s hard at times for me retaining information & finding my my words as my cognitive ability has been affected by my stroke) & by the time I’ve cobbled together making some sense the threads invariably moved or morphed into something completely different I'm not as resilient as I was the nastiness & hateful rhetoric really get into my head, you all have our support on these threads & vent away💐

"Kemi Badenoch has told the UK Covid-19 Inquiry she is “less worried” about misinformation spread on social media sites such as X/Twitter than that shared on private WhatsApp groups. "

Eh? How would she know what misinformation was shared on private WA? Where does she think it comes from?

(Or is she referring to MPs WA?)

We had consensus governments after the war and a genuine desire to build a better society. Also, no internet.

Honestly - and I genuinely mean this kindly - you are your own worst enemies by finding and commenting on the threads of which you speak. It pushes them into active and so more people pile in and on.

If the clickbaity ones were ignored they would fizzle out. There was one a few days back that really didn't get traction.

Those posters are reeling you guys in! They are enjoying it, too. It doesn't matter what counterarguments or truths you post - they will be used as evidence against you.

I know it is incredibly hard to ignore them- I properly had to train myself to do this during the height of Covid teacher bashing - and I have hidden the FWR board as many of you know.

There is quite an interesting thread running about how MN has got nastier - most posters are in agreement and certain boards do get named.

DuncinToffee · 27/01/2025 16:18

Well said Piggy

If you take a step back, you can actually just laugh at this sudden obsession with polls for example.

Fair point Piggy.

PandoraSox · 27/01/2025 16:21

I know you are right, Piggy and Duncin. Although I think it is worth refuting some of the nastier stuff.

The poll obsession is getting pretty dull now!

There are some posters that seem quite pre-occupied with the posters on these threads. There were messages over the weekend practically begging for posters from here to comment. They need the engagement. We don't have to give it to them.

👋to lurkers.
Personally I think the volume of anti-government threads will be their undoing. Its boring the shit out of people. Its boring me and I love politics.
