Elon Musk has posed as a champion of those poor bereaved families in Southport

but the killer watched a violent video just before his killing spree on X

and Musk is refusing to take it down despite numerous official requests from UK & Australian authorities

How much has social media got to do with the radicalisation of people and how does radicalsation via the internet, algorithms etc link to free speech and anything goes?

Those poor poor people as if they haven't enough to contend with - and so soon after the trial too

Leave them in peace

Here an interesting article (originally in the FT but linked here for free access) - that not all billionaires are like Musk. Some believe they have responsibilities towards wider society in the form of ESG and the like.

‘As a vocal backer of environmental, social and governance initiatives, Hoffmann is the epitome of what Musk and US president-elect Donald Trump would decry as “woke” capitalism.
“I define myself as an idealist, and I would say that the couple of days after [Trump’s victory, it] was really quite difficult to pick [myself] up. This is a knockout,” says Hoffmann, speaking a few weeks after November’s US election. “Fifty-one per cent of Americans feel that a corrupt old man is going to make their life better? I’m sure it’s not true.”

There are examples of the 1% who are genuinely trying to change the world for the better, not just maximise profits and step all over people to achieve that.

I don't buy ice cream but i'll be treating myself to a tub of Ben & Jerry's at the weekend. Their company's values are really great.

I thought we Darn Sarf were going to escape Storm Eowyn - but apparently there's a line from Bristol to London, below which there's a possibility of tornadoes Shock

I'm under that line 👀

I can confirm it's both dry and not particularly windy here right now!

I am vaguely wondering who's lurking on here reporting posts they don't like. They must have a lot of time on their hands.

Little Tennyson is already beyond furious at not being allowed out.

I neeeeedddd to learn that death stare. My students already halt at my current one but that may halt them for weeks 😂

I wonder if deliberate misinformation should be reported?

Or is that a step towards censorship?

BIWI · 24/01/2025 16:20

Well, we were encouraged to report misinformation about Covid/vaccines, so I don't see why not?

I am not sure it is worth reporting. The thread on Starmer sending troops into combat in Ukraine was a clear cut case of scaremongering and disinformation. Still running, even though the OP plopped and ran.

The British Army is currently beginning a joint NATO exercise (Steadfast Dart?) in Romania. Freely available info on their FB page, for example. Can see thickoes getting confused (Romania, Ukraine, all the same place, innit?).

The very same brave citizens who hounded a paediatrician ?

I blame the person they got to read it to them ...

Doctor driven out of home by vigilantes

Self-styled vigilantes attacked the home of a hospital paediatrician after apparently confusing her professional title with the word “paedophile”, it emerged yesterday.

DS quip this evening "if Trump carries on people are going to start liking Putin just because he's not Trump. I'm not sure I'm ready for that world" 😂

I wish to goodness MNHQ would bring in a block poster facility. And that there was a way to report posters who use the reaction button to goad.

There are some truly unpleasant people on threads at the moment.

There’s one particular one who can best be summed up as asinine.

As long as the block includes name changes otherwise it will be useless

True, unfortunately. You should be able to report someone though for using the reactions just to laugh at what you say without engaging with you.

Llttledrummergirl · 24/01/2025 21:45

Sorry, might be my fault for encouraging that. Some of the more outlandish comments just got a laugh.

I see Jenrick has tweeted his alarm regarding how long it takes for rape cases to get to court.

Has he had his fingers in his ears for the last decade?
The Bar Council and the Law Society have been agitating about this for years. The Criminal Bar Association flagged concerns to Select Committee in 2021. Part of the reason for falling numbers of RASSO barristers is linked to the pay levels set by governments over the last decade.
How did Jenrick miss this whilst he was in Government and able to do something about it?

www.criminalbar.com/resources/news/cba-rasso-survey-results-12-02-24/

It is an important issue that requires attention. But given Jenrick's track record this seems another cynical ploy.

Sam Coates was expressing his astonishment yesterday on Sky News that the PM had singled out one judicial review applicant to blame for the legal challenges bedevilling infrastructure projects. Let’s fix that 😈 Here’s a story that starts with a man shut in his cellar.

A bit from that FT article

But Reeves — who this week was talking up the British economy at the World Economic Forum — has shown in recent days a willingness to use the power of her office to take decisive action across Whitehall, some of which is privately applauded by the Tories.

Ministers this week ousted Marcus Bokkerink as chair of the Competition and Markets Authority, the monopolies regulator that has been criticised for allegedly hobbling growth. His departure was a signal to other regulators they must push harder on growth, according to Treasury officials. “Sometimes a message has to be sent,” said one.

Reeves’ focus on spurring on regulators has received the private admiration of the opposition. “We should have done this ourselves,” said one former Tory Treasury minister.

Yet while some Tories privately approve, Reeves’ actions have ruffled some on her side of the aisle. She has been accused by former shadow chancellor John McDonnell of leaving the door open for critics to say Labour was “defending corporate abuse and profiteers”. Another senior leftwing Labour MP said: “It’s desperate.” She appears, however, to be comfortable making such enemies. ou could conclude if you wanted to.”
