https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/23/government-decision-not-to-authorise-pesticide-is-sweet-as-honey-for-pollinators

Government overturns Tory measure and bans emergency use of bee-killing pesticide

Emergency use of Cruiser SB, a neonicotinoid pesticide highly toxic to bees, to be outlawed in UK in line with EU

FINALLY!

Save the bees!

It's very windy here in Suffolk, cats have asked to go in the catio but have come back in quickly. They don't like windy days and are all on edge. The Orange One is stalking around with his tail puffed out.

PandoraSox · 24/01/2025 10:51

It is a bit breezy here in S Wales. Sunny though, which is nice.

cardibach · 24/01/2025 10:52

Perdy cat is mortally offended if she goes in the catio and it’s windy. As a cat with resting judgy face anyway, this is something to behold.

Notonthestairs · 24/01/2025 10:53

Breezy night in my part of Herts. But it's very still & peaceful now with a bit of blue sky. Watching the weather reports with horror.

Piggywaspushed · 24/01/2025 11:21

On the subject of Musk's notNazi salute, guess what I saw some boys doing in the corridor this morning....

cardibach · 24/01/2025 11:22

Unsurprising @Piggywaspushed

cardibach · 24/01/2025 11:23

A sweary but apposite disappointing affirmation for us all.

In an interesting foreshadowing of all our lives, I had an email from my insurers with storm advice.

Which serves to remind us of the simple cost of climate change. Having to expect more severe weather means more expensive insurance. Having to build to that much higher standard means more expensive buildings.

You can chose to pay for it through net zero. You can chose to pay for it in more expensive insurance and housing (plus the implications of more expensive food as severe weather damages yields) but you are gonna pay for it one way or another.

I am vaguely wondering who's lurking on here reporting posts they don't like. They must have a lot of time on their hands.

Little Tennyson is already beyond furious at not being allowed out.

@ilovesooty he looks positively murderous!

Let the lurkers report. What they really want is for these threads to be shut down and are probably irked because that is not going to happen.

ilovesooty · 24/01/2025 11:47

He does look murderous @PandoraSox . I suspect I'll be paying for the rest of the day.

PandoraSox · 24/01/2025 11:52

BTW, I found the post with the clip of Macron pp alluded to.

He puts his hand on his heart, then raises his arm to start waving at the crowd, but a bit of sneaky editing cuts off the clip just as he is about to start waving. Whereas we have all seen the whole sequence of what Musk did. Twice. No need for sneaky editing there.

I would link to the post but I might get reported for it, so won't bother.

In one of our wedding photos it looks like the vicar is doing a nazi salute when he has actually just thrown some confetti. Careful editing/moment in time pictures can be deceptive but we've seen the Musk actions unedited. You don't run companies the size he does and make the money he has without knowing what you are doing and how to project the image you want people to see

I’m not surprised. You’re a cruel evil woman keeping him prisoner!

You cruel, cruel slave.

ilovesooty · 24/01/2025 12:27

He'll have to live with it. I'm not risking him being blown away. 😂

cakeorwine · 24/01/2025 12:48

The first foundation for unity is honoring the inherent dignity of every human being, which is, as all faiths represented here affirm, the birthright of all people as children of the One God. In public discourse, honoring each other’s dignity means refusing to mock, discount, or demonize those with whom we differ, choosing instead to respectfully debate across our differences, and whenever possible, to seek common ground. If common ground is not possible, dignity demands that we remain true to our convictions without contempt for those who hold convictions of their own.

A second foundation for unity is honesty in both private conversation and public discourse. If we aren’t willing to be honest, there is no use in praying for unity, because our actions work against the prayers themselves. We might, for a time, experience a false sense of unity among some, but not the sturdier, broader unity that we need to address the challenges we face.
Now to be fair, we don’t always know where the truth lies, and there is a lot working against the truth now, staggeringly so. But when we do know what is true, it’s incumbent upon us to speak the truth, even when – and especially when – it costs us.

A third foundation for unity is humility, which we all need, because we are all fallible human beings. We make mistakes. We say and do things that we regret. We have our blind spots and biases, and we are perhaps the most dangerous to ourselves and others when we are persuaded, without a doubt, that we are absolutely right and someone else is absolutely wrong. Because then we are just a few steps away from labeling ourselves as the good people, versus the bad people.

Interesting points

Personally I've been most persuaded by German commentators and journalists who are well versed in parsing this sort of behaviour which of course is illegal there - it seems like only the AfD think it's anything other than a nazi salute

Mine does this so I usually open the door so she can sniff the weather to make an assessment like she normally does.

She then usually walks away from the door, giving me evils because the weather is obviously my fault, and then goes off to find somewhere inconvenient for me to sleep for several hours.

PickAChew · 24/01/2025 13:28

We're just about through the peak up here in Co Durham. We've lost some guttering. Could be worse but my nerves were already in tatters from other stuff when it landed on the roof above me. I was expecting it to be a chimney from the noise it made.

I'm holding on to that affirmation 😂

Elon Musk has posed as a champion of those poor bereaved families in Southport

but the killer watched a violent video just before his killing spree on X

and Musk is refusing to take it down despite numerous official requests from UK & Australian authorities
