It's annoying that the paywall is up when it's showing as free to read on the Bluesky app. Sorry.

Look at how Rachel Reeves is trying to use the barrage of bad economic news to do politically contentious stuff on growth. Tories say she is out of her depth / some privately egging her on. With @danielthomasldn.bsky.social @pickardje.bsky.social and @annasophiegross.bsky.social

The Tory Party and their destruction of the criminal justice system means questions are better directed at them for failure. They are totally culpable for failing to pay their staff adequately, particularly the specialist prosecutors needed for sexual offences. This is important and very difficult work, and pretending it's all down to Labour and logistics is total bollocks. Very few lawyers now go into criminal law. At the junior levels the pay is dire. You can earn more money and have less stress doing commercial work.

Sam Coates was expressing his astonishment yesterday on Sky News that the PM had singled out one judicial review applicant to blame for the legal challenges bedevilling infrastructure projects. Let’s fix that 😈 Here’s a story that starts with a man shut in his cellar.

That is a great read.

Also mentions

Heathrow expansion

Investment in a massive new Universal theme park being proposed for a site near Bedford,

Finalising negotiations with AstraZeneca to revive a stalled vaccine manufacturing site in Speke, Merseyside.

Support for a £9bn highway and tunnel across the river Thames in east London

You've made me feel all stressed. That theme park is visible (and audible) from my house.

I hope Reeves succeeds. Britain can't get economic growth by repeating what was done before. And if she annoys some of old school Corbynites then really not bothered. Our public spending is pretty near 100 percent of GDP.

SerendipityJane · 25/01/2025 10:56

In the - still worth reading - excellent dissection of US politics "Parliament of Whores" the sadly much missed P.J.O'Rourke looks at bits of government.

As he was writing the book there was a national panic over some cars seemingly "going rogue" and accelerating into walls etc. A federal agency was put onto the problem. Whereupon our fearless reporter popped to a test facility and spoke to an engineer.

It transpired the engineer was a real petrol head (O'Rourke was also a motoring journalist) and lived and breathed cars. When he was asked why he hadn't setup his own repair shop etc, he replied "Because this pays better".

P.J.'s reaction to that was anger that it was better to work for the government on taxes, than work outside the government paying taxes.

If you extrapolate from that anecdote, you should see the problem.

In another thread I commented that we have reached a point where there isn't enough money in the world to satisfy our super rich any more (if there ever was). They are now consciously and openly stealing from the future. In 50 years time, our great grandkids will be paying part of their earnings into debts created today by Musk and his Merrie Men.

I see Reeves annoying McDonnell as a positive sign.

Britain can't get economic growth by repeating what was done before.

If you could cut everyones commute by 10 minutes (for example) you'd have a "free" productivity boost.

If more kids left school being able to read and write more than pronouns - it's be a "free" productivity boost.

If people got get treated and back to work in hours rather than years, you'd have a "free" productivity boost.

All of which would be generated by doing what we do now, better. Rather than needing new sources of magic beans.

A lesson to read beyond the headline. Morris owned his mistake in a later tweet

If the dollar is doing well, the world is doing well - how much UK investment is traded in USD ?

The Times has become less and less reliable since Gallagher was appointed (2022). It's only a smidgen less wild than the Telegraph these days.

I think last 2/3 paragraphs of any article are often the most valuable as they tend to directly counter the headline (often with facts to back it up!)

"Never forget Betteridges Law of Headlines"

Ha! (Must admit I had to google it!)

BIWI · 25/01/2025 12:16

Isn't that Farage's modus operandi too? Asking questions rather than making assertions, which suggests the answer should be 'yes' but is usually 'no'!

All I know is whenever there is a 30pt Headline "Are immigrants getting free hotels and Sky subscriptions ?" I don't need to read the "article" to know the answer is an emphatic 40pt "No"

E2A: There is an adage "The simplest fool can ask a question the wisest man cannot answer"

It's quite amusing to see how desperate some goading posters are to tag other posters into coming back to argue with them.

PandoraSox · 25/01/2025 16:18

It is fun to stop engaging so that all they have is their echo-chamber.

I had one stalking me a while back because I refused to engage with them. It drove them mad.

Willowkins · 25/01/2025 16:49

There's so much craziness right now. I find myself starting a cogent response but then deleting it because logic doesn't seem to be working.

SerendipityJane · 25/01/2025 16:57

Used to play a game one job a few years back. It was called "headlines".

Each player takes it in turn to go before a panel of the other player. Each panellist reads out a headline. If the player guesses the paper (you can date this game) they get a point. If not the person stating the headline gets a point.

Thanks to "AI" this is now a game you can play solo. Just write a script to randomly pull headlines from a feed of your choice and see if you can guess the source. (If you have screenreading software you can hear the headline).

Just get "AI" to do it. Everyone else is.

ilovesooty · 25/01/2025 17:00

I'm certainly not prepared to engage with posters who throw insults around or put laugh reactions on posts rather than talk to you. Let them burble away to themselves. If they find that boring - tough.

As predicted, Kemi Badenoch may well turn out to be a temporary phenomenon.

They haven't changed leader for at least 3 weeks. That's aaaaaaages.
