Yes but it seemed very important to be calm and not agitate him at all. Both my friend and I instinctively knew if we upset or angered him he would probably kill us by accident or design.

Mercifully you don't often meet people like this. But people with mental illnesses who carry weapons or feel the need to leave the house with them are very dangerous. This boy should have been in secure accommodation. Probably pushed onto the family or they insisted they could manage him. Both wrong.

He started displaying signs at age 13, and it is very common for serious mental ill health to manifest alongside puberty. This would have been in 2019, a time when all mental health services had already been gutted by austerity, and the threshold for even getting an assessment would have been very high. I'm also concerned by the way his mother appears to have placed her faith in an online religious healer and I wonder whether there was help seeking behaviour from the parents. I know from personal experience how incredibly hard it is to get support, I've watched my DS go through it. Fortunately the only person he ever tried to harm was himself.

Axel Rudakubana was grown in a perfect storm, or so it seems. I'm not for a second saying he doesn't bear any responsibility, but all the systems failed where he was concerned.

The Prime Minister's statement after the Southport murders guilty plea today.

Keir Starmer says “the state failed” to protect the victims in the case of the Southport attacks.

There are concerns that agencies were warned of Rudakubana’s violent tendencies and interest in extreme content.

“Britain will rightly demand answers” he says.

I'm very grateful that my autistic almost 19 year old has merely spent the past hour obsessing about and looking at pictures of Iced Gems.

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 17:09

Farage is trying to blame Starmer for a cover up. Says he (Farage) was right all along.

He doesn't understand the concept of covering up, obviously.

Is it Farage ? Or is it Musk ?

A good question that every decent journalist should add when taking an answer from "our nige" as the folk of Clacton would call him if they could find him.

He seems particularly aerated about the 3 referrals to prevent - guess he still hasn't got over the time he tried to bring up the terrorism charges at PMQs and was told by Starmer and the Speaker to shut up [slightly more politely] because it was sub judice

Will there be a Serious Case Review since he was well known to social services? Or is that only when the young person dies?

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 17:30

I think there should be an inquiry into how the system failed so catastrophically.

Something which any junior reporter on the Hebrides Gazette would have known, and yet it was still spun by (some of) the media as Reform being "gagged".

You can see why distrust in the media is extant. They don't help themselves.

pointythings · 20/01/2025 17:47

I absolutely agree an enquiry is needed. I think much of what it will say is going to be 'told you so' kind of stuff.

@PickAChew I know far more than anyone should about sharks thanks to my DS. Fortunately that has always been his thing, and so he's finishing a degree in marine biology and conservation this year.

He's also been very lucky in that student medical support where he is has been far better than he would have had here.

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 17:51

Christ, there is now a lovely thread spewing up all the conspiracy theories about the case. I despair.

SerendipityJane · 20/01/2025 17:52

The problem with enquiries is the findings will be viewed through the prism of the day and the ideology of the government, as will any recommendations.

bombastix · 20/01/2025 17:56

The facts that are coming out are damning. He was extremely dangerous. I don't think he should be expecting anything but a very very long custodial sentence. He planned his murders, did them systematically, possessed terrorist material and made substance that's only use is to kill people. It appears he killed his neighbours cat with it.

This is not offending which suggests some ongoing psychosis or moment where the balance of his mind was disturbed. It suggests someone with a very serious psychiatric disorder which is not amenable to treatment. Even if he accepted it, which he appears to have not.

There should be. It's a very similar case to the 3 murdered in Nottingham.

Someone with obvious extreme mental illness who isn't placed in safe accommodation for them and the public when the evidence is there and the authorities are aware of it.

You have laughed earlier at my (also autistic ds).

He was talking about how our country people take no responsibility for themselves. Taking about how we have railings alongside everything etc.

He then ended with "if someone Dutch was cycling alongside a canal in Amsterdam and their bike was getting wet they'd just admit their cycling in the wrong bit" Grin

Well, to be fair a lot of the canals in Amsterdam do have rails along parts of them. Also I was not at all stoical at age 16 when a bus essentially squeezed me off the road and into the canal in my home town (very much not Amsterdam and yet lots of canals) - I contacted the bus company, gave them the time it happened and got the driver into trouble.

Possibly that was taking responsibility, since with any luck the driver wouldn't have been so careless again.
