Hmm, Kemi, who was in government when so much was missed?

(I really do need to get my password sorted so I can delete this account. So does Obama!)

I said a while ago that there is nothing the Tories wont try and blame Labour for...
We've seen it all before e.g 3 day week, Brexit, state of the NHS blamed on PFI etc but this is a new low.

I hope Starmer, in his speech at 0830, makes it very clear who was in Government when this man or as child at the time, could have been stopped and doesn't fall into the trap of spending too much time on their allegation of what he was supposed to have known and when in relation to the riots and release of pre trial information.

Agreed.

When truly awful things like this happening there is a sort of national grief and people want someone or something to blame so they can rationalise it clearly and create a bogeyman. When the reality tends to often be infinitely complex and a result of multiple failures across services and systems and it becomes like a reflection of society overall. And nobody likes looking in the mirror. It is far easier to “other”.

Notonthestairs · 21/01/2025 07:57

I've read Badenoch and Farage's comments. Neither seem particularly interested in the complex multiple failures.

itsgettingweird · 21/01/2025 08:01

Itv right now a Tory MP - Chris Phelp - trying to see if Labour were to blame to riots through apparent lack of transparency.

Asking if government were right to keep some detail secret. And should these be shared.

Should they have been more open and transparent with the public about the facts they knew so the public didn't fill the void with misinformation.

95% of his interview was about whether what happened after the attack was La ours fault rather than whether the failures to follow through with or ent on the Tory's watch was his fault.

Apparently any enquiry "must" ask these questions of Labour.

bombastix · 21/01/2025 08:02

It probably comes down to why or why not he wasn't sectioned for public protection. That may come down to resources, which will look terrible. The obligation of the state is to keep its people safe.

Badenoch is just irresponsible and opportunistic . It is unfortunate that she is the Conservative leader just when you would need clear blue water between them and Reform. Farage can do all this better than she can. The day is fast approaching where the media asks him first and her second.

Some things aren't preventable that is true but one has to ask What is the point of complex and expensive public services and de radicalsation programs if someone like this man is allowed to carry on in his murderous views?

Its not "othering" at all.

Yes and why Labour need to put the focus on why the Tories, in Govt, failed to prevent the murders of 3 children.

the Tories are clearly trying to shift and divert onto Starmer and riots, the 'press will assist them on this too, Labour need to be very robust on this and, as they have chosen to respond like this & for individual tory ministers records....

Fight fire with fire....

bombastix · 21/01/2025 08:12

Johnathan Hall KC, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, says that there is a gap in the law that does not deal with the effects of the internet and people who become obsessed with violence. The law will not classify them as terrorists.

He is right, but I do wonder why this boy was not detained for the safety of others. I hope the answer is not lack of resources and being unable to find doctors who could; I understand he refused any medical assistance.

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 08:19

The most urgent question surely is are there other young men/teens like this around and do they also pose a danger and what are they going to do about this.
The actions looking to the future are more urgent for society than everyone blaming each other etc?
The radicalisation of young men via the internet is probably an urgent question, is it not?

Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2025 08:23

Trump is withdrawing from the WHO. Madness.

bombastix · 21/01/2025 08:23

It would appear that there will be new powers to extend Prevent to other areas, which is quite radical. Usually that is something Parliament would do.

Jonathan Hall is on the money with this. We need people like him.

Araminta1003 · 21/01/2025 08:33

Agreed @bombastix

What about something banal like 'And the show goes on' @DuncinToffee ?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/01/2025 08:43

There must be a lot of very worried Government employees in the US today.

And pardoning all the January 6th rioters.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/01/2025 08:46

How about?
Thread 16 Starmer. At least we don't live in the USA.

DuncinToffee · 21/01/2025 08:47

Didn't read the suggestions, sorry.

That was a given. I’d have been surprised if he hadn’t.

Notaflippinclue · 21/01/2025 10:33

Who can section hundreds if not thousands of bullied incels probably on the spectrum addicted to violence and porn on the internet who aren't in education and unemployable whose parents are unable to intervene - what's the answer? Whatever it is will take years to implement.

BIWI · 21/01/2025 10:39

I had to do a double-take there. The juxtaposition of @DuncinToffee and @Blossomtoes posts made me think that Sir Keir was pardoning our rioters! (Clearly didn't clock the date!)

No one has said that all incels will be sectioned!
