@dontcallmelen lovely flowers. I might go and buy some later.

PickAChew · 20/01/2025 12:09

Thank goodness for that, @DuncinToffee

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 12:06

What are you suggesting, Jane?

From Duncin's update, the boy probably isn't fit to stand trial. Best for everyone that the case is dealt with this way.

Edited

I wasn't "suggesting" anything. Well I don't think I was. I'll have to check with myself and get back to you on that one.

In the meantime, what I wrote was what I wrote. A comment on the issues around defandants pleading guilty in serious trials which means there is no cut'n'thrust of digging into the matter as a whole. Bearing in mind at no point in my life - or anyones life - have I claimed any legal expertise. Beyond reading too much "Rumpole" on the tube another life ago.

Thanks to a subsequent post I now read that there will be evidence made public, which will serve to satisfy that wise maxim about justice not only being done, but being seen to be done.

You would never guess it's Monday 😀

If he isn't fit to stand trial, is he fit to plead ?

You find yourself wondering what happened in the shadows to "encourage" a guilty verdict

It was this bit that made me pause. You almost sounded like one of the Two Tier Keir brigade!🤣

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 12:26

That is chilling. The system seems to have failed everyone concerned @Efacsen

PickAChew · 20/01/2025 12:40

He's almost exactly the same age as DS2 😢

It is terrifying to think that a young man could be so broken and violent with nothing happening to stop him in his tracks, even after previous serious incidents.

Saucery · 20/01/2025 12:50

I hope the victims and their families are ok with the Guilty plea meaning no trial. They are the only ones whose views on that matter.

On a wider scale, there is vanishingly little help out there for disenfranchised young people. Prevent is a joke that leads to no action.
I’m not going to say any more because it’s an ongoing case, the victims deserve better and social media on crime in general is a fucking bin fire.

Indeed - was aware that he had 'mental health issues' and was a bit of a recluse - but other than that the attack had come out of the blue - clearly not

That bit made me raise an eyebrow too.

pointythings · 20/01/2025 13:56

I do wonder where his parents were in all this. I have just read that Guardian article and really, if that were my child I would be fully That Parent to get my child help.

bombastix · 20/01/2025 13:57

Well he's looking at a Whole Life Order or indefinite detention in hospital. But if he is fit to plead it's got to be some serious mental disorder that applied at the time of the murder.

His background suggests he is extremely dangerous; not sure he is a terrorist, he seems more depraved and violent. There is no coherent motive for terrorism, no evidence of actual radicalization.

Araminta1003 · 20/01/2025 14:00

Honestly, the profile of an 18 year old with ASD, disrupted during Covid, groomed and manipulated to extremes by online violence. And probably subject to racism for most of his life.
Not sure being “that parent” will have gotten him the help they needed. Sounds like lots of failures, yet again.

And on the Whole Life Order an ill 18 year old (not yet 21), probably unlikely.

Notaflippinclue · 20/01/2025 14:00

Sometimes it seems like there is such a thing as an 'evil seed'

bombastix · 20/01/2025 14:02

That's true, you can't get a WLO for 18 to 21.

Multiple murderer however, I suspect a 40 plus minimum term

There’s very little Help to be had.

bombastix · 20/01/2025 14:07

I don't think he is in the realm of help. He will get psychiatric treatment in prison if he consents. It would appear he had rejected the help he was offered as a younger teenager. I do not think his parents would have been able to force him to have treatment or engage post 13.

No, I don’t agree with this. There is always a reason and it’s never as simple as someone being ‘born bad’. That just absolves society of the need to construct meaningful education, support and therapeutic systems.

bombastix · 20/01/2025 14:10

It's a depressing thought that this offender will probably get a full psychiatric evaluation for the purpose of sentencing. He likely needed it far earlier.

I worry too that it was his father who dissuaded him from going to school with a knife. That should have meant an intervention.

DuncinToffee · 20/01/2025 14:19

Jake Berry ffs

(sorry for the link with so many adverts)

There is so much dangerous rubbish being spouted about today's news over on the other place and most of it should just be ignored.

But when people of influence who until recently held political office come out with this nonsense, it should be called out

Former Tory MP shut down for 'shameful' Southport post
