The home secretary has released a statement ahead of the trial of alleged Southport attacker Axel Rudakubana, which starts today

Yvette Cooper said: “This will be a deeply traumatic and distressing time for the families of Alice, Bebe and Elsie, the survivors, and the people of Southport and the whole country will be thinking of them.

The most important thing for all of us is to ensure that the legal process can take its course, to respect the difficult job the court has to do so there is a fair trial and justice can be done..."

"There will be a time at the end of this trial to discuss what happened and the action needed in response to this horrific tragedy.

But for now, and until the proceedings have concluded, the priority for all of us must be to ensure justice is done.”

The 15 year rule of not being able to vote was introduced by the Labour Party? And then may have indirectly led to Brexit? Is that correct?

Far too reasoned and sensible. Let's hope the Mail, Express and Telegraph can make up for it with some borderline contemptuous "discussion" on their shit stained pages.

Araminta1003 · 20/01/2025 11:08

Surely when mistrials are a real risk the editors of papers have to disable comment sections? Is that not the case?

No idea. Google should be able to tell you?

Twitter will go into overdrive. It won't be pretty.

"Have to" ?

"Have" is not a word for Princes, little man. You need to remember who the press are.

Nice clear statement

But it will be a huge challenge to manage SM not descending into an ugly mess of contempt of court - and worse

Araminta1003 · 20/01/2025 11:16

The jurors are not allowed to go on social media or other media, in theory. The risk is contempt of court. But it should also be a ban on media and social media in high profile cases like this. At least, in my opinion.

Araminta1003 · 20/01/2025 11:17

But then of course people shout “freedom of speech”.

People aren't always right. If you have the wisdom of crowds, you also have the moronity of the masses.

Wait till Lord High Priest Musk has something to say.

Twitter will go into overdrive. It won't be pretty.

And Musk won't do anything helpful to change that - he's more likely to put his oar in and/or tweak the algorithm to promote it

Ugh

BIWI · 20/01/2025 11:23

I read that article about the Oxfam report @DuncinToffee and it actually made me feel sick.

bigly!

Shame about the small crowd size.....

It's a humongous crowd. Biggest ever. They say, I don't know but they tell me, it's the biggest crowd ever to attend anything ever in the world.

Breaking: Axel Rudakubana has pleaded guilty to all 16 charges in relation to the Southport attack, making ricin and the possession of a document useful to a terrorist

It means no trial will be held and the case will go straight to sentence, which is being organised now

Great news for all of us. Hopefully

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 11:54

Sadly, that won't pacify the ghouls. They will say it is all a fix to stop the truth from coming out. Just waiting for the MN thread.

Efacsen · 20/01/2025 11:54

That's excellent news @DuncinToffee

Tho' of course it means that all the evidence will never be heard now - frustrating the curious and those commited to conspiracy theories about information being withheld

PandoraSox · 20/01/2025 11:57

Didn't take long.

I am sure I vaguely recall reading that the prosecution (or was it judges) in serious cases encouraged a not guilty plea as it meant all the evidence would be examined in an open court - much less chance of a miscarriage of justice.

You find yourself wondering what happened in the shadows to "encourage" a guilty verdict.

In this particular case, does this mean there is a lot that can't be made public ?

DuncinToffee · 20/01/2025 12:02

From Lizzie Dearden

Because of the pleas, the prosecution did not open its case today

They will do that at the sentencing hearing, when the defence will also present evidence and mitigation in relation to Rudakubana's health

So Thursday is when we will get more details on the background of the attack

What are you suggesting, Jane?

From Duncin's update, the boy probably isn't fit to stand trial. Best for everyone that the case is dealt with this way.
