Just to say my final word on the Latin!

I was trying, maybe clumsily,to suggest the word 'may' was doing much heavy lifting in that Guardian headline. Of the state schools which offer Latin, most are grammars. There are, that I know of, about 10 comps offering. Of those, I know of 4 that use the Cambridge Classics programme. So, I am not sure the panic is warranted.

I totally agree about elitism. We have tried really hard to keep Latin going but the numbers are falling off a cliff. It's STEM obsession really.

I don't know what its purpose is now. Latin used to be the language of the ruling class. Now evidently it is a skill with computing that will shape that ruling class.

dollybird · 13/01/2025 18:17

Checking in. I don't have a cat 😺

cardibach · 13/01/2025 18:17

Thanks for the new thread. Going to pay dog tax this time with Lilli-Mae, the pocket bully I walked today. This is her demanding her cuddle tax, which she does about every 5 mins, so I thought she was appropriate.

Why on earth would Google waste time with translating a useless language like Latin ? Clearly they don't have the same view as some posters here.

(Admittedly they don't have ancient Greek. So that was a wasted term learning the alphabet).

bombastix · 13/01/2025 18:30

@SerendipityJane - I am firmly of the view that Latin is a waste of time. The fact that Enoch Powell had considerable facilities in classics did not save him from being a racist.

Not so topical anymore but this is the last picture I took of the boys just before we took the tree down.

I also studied Latin at a state comprehensive in Glasgow in the late 70s - for both O Grade and Higher (we were able to do 6 Highers, so I was able to keep it equal Arts and Sciences: English, French, Latin, Maths, Physics, Chemistry). I'm glad I did it as it helped me when I went on to study French and Russian at Uni - but I wouldn't say it was an essential subject. Any heavily declined living language would have served the same purpose.

I got an A for for both exams (despite only having re-started it after returning from 2 years in NZ 6 months before the "O" grades Shock) - but only because I am an excellent rote learner Grin

I am clearly an uneducated heathen as I have no idea of what you are all saying! Grin

Thank you for the new thread. I was fortunate enough to see a murmuration a couple of years ago (in a supermarket car park of all places). Here is a screenshot from the video that I took.

The Scots all did Latin in the 70s and 80s whilst the Welsh were learning Russian! Preparing for the revolution , I presume.
