Things you have bought that were immediately shite (Christmas/New Year Edition)

Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

I’ll second the Colin the Caterpillar comment. DH did the M&S run this year and bought one as he couldn’t find a Yule log and it tastes ok but the chocolate is far too thick and sponge dry.

A cd/dvd drive for a laptop. Spent hours trying to connect it so that DD could burn some of her fave Spotify tracks. Was an 'Amazon choice' with loads of good reviews but just doesn't work. Outside the return window as well 😡

I know Amazon say returns within a month or so, but if something is faulty you have longer, a year generally. They have always been brilliant something have failed three, six, nine months in.

@blahblonk we got these as stocking fillers for the kids. Could not believe the size of them!
Toastie my arse!

Thanks @LostMySocks @Thunderpants88 and @Freddiefan

I’ll have a look at the Smash & Ocean ones but might just use flasks for a wee old-fashioned vibe.

I have been practising drives out on my own working on fear of leaving house by self so was less for supping on way to shops and more towards enjoying a picnic in the car so I can go a bit further.

I’ve been thinking of a new toastie maker so glad to read the warnings there! I remember having a nearly non-stop production line with siblings when kids and entire loaves were used so a half a toastie sounds like a sad affair!

FruitPolos · 03/01/2025 06:40

M&S mini Yorkshire puddings from their party food section.

Came in a plastic tray with individual "cups" for the Yorkshires.

Instructions clearly stated to cook in the tray (I checked)

The tray melted onto my large oven tray that came with my month old oven and DH spent a good hour on Boxing Day scraping off the plastic.

Nope, I too was disappointed by the Toastie crimpit. I have both the standard one intended for thins and the toastie one and it is barely any bigger. So much wasted bread. And the wrap one is pants too 🙄

ThrivingOutOfSpite · 03/01/2025 06:52

@ifIwerenotanandroid you can generally go onto your order and request a refund for short dated/out of date items. The last 3 weeks have been dreadful for short stated items with my shopping delivery, I’m assuming because of temp Christmas staff.

TroysMammy · 03/01/2025 06:54

Remington hair straighteners. The rigid cable has kinks in it and no matter how much I try to straighten it out it gets tangled around itself and any other electrical cable it is near. I hate it for this reason and have hated it every day for the last 3 years.

TheWholeMealBaby · 03/01/2025 07:00

All of the Aldi party food! Have always got bits for the buffet from Aldi and it's always been nice enough on a budget. This year it was all tasteless rubbish, I swear it all tasted the same.
Got the New Year's day buffet food from Morrisons and it was so much nicer!

Clinique Black Honey lipstick. Long coveted and - for me - expensive. I was really looking forward to trying it out but what a disappointment! It sticks to any dry skin on the lips (I didn’t even realise I had any!) making lips look flaky, and the final look is very much ‘red wine’ lips. Yuck. Literally the worst lipstick I’ve ever used.

I was also disappointed by this after reading rave reviews…

For some reason many of the new cotton tops we have bought this year have immediately sprung small holes. Huh. Maybe we have bugs.

Larger purchase: my house.

Do you have stone worktops in the new house?

I get holes in my top when I wear them with jeans, the jeans button scrapes the countertop and makes a hole.

BlackChunkyBoots · 03/01/2025 07:15

My neice got a Crimpit, I asked her to report bqck with results but I see some are already in from PP...what a shame.

I got a new hairdryer. It’s rubbish with very little power as it’s an eco one.

Apparently, the Dyson Airwrap is good (see other thread parts 1, 2 and 3).

Yalta · 03/01/2025 03:38

OMG I was complaining only a few days ago that a couple of tops I had recently bought had suddenly sprung holes

Moths? Or do gentler cycle in washing machine?

I always really wanted a shark flex until I tried my friends. It wouldn’t grip my hair, created a ton of frizz and my normally curl holding hair (for days!) dropped the curls in a couple of hours 😐

I’m quite pleased you posted that as I was going to buy one after my Revlon One Step started overheating in the last couple of days. Looked at the reviews for that and the Dyson but decided to go for a cheap and cheerful One Step dupe from Amazon with good reviews as I figured I would be less disappointed if I’d only spent £30!

Eumie · 03/01/2025 07:41

My friend brought round the wrap version of the crimpit. She loved it, but I thought it was naff. It’s so easy to make a quesadilla, I feel like the crimpit just made it more complicated!

Then my in-laws always bring the mince pies for, and this year they went for quantity over quality. It was a big box from either Lidl/aldi and they were poor. Not even clotted cream on top made them palatable. There was still half a box left after a week!

BettyBardMacDonald · 03/01/2025 01:37

Are expiry dates really that hard & fast? I should think a day or too leeway at least.

Call customer service and they should refund (they have for me when it's happened on a weekly shop with chicken).
food deliveries are so hard these days as expiration dates seem so much shorter. Supermarket shelves always seem stocked with food which expired in a few days. It was definitely longer pre Brexit.

ThePure · 03/01/2025 07:42

HappyHappyy · 02/01/2025 22:11

Waitrose Yule Log at £7 - just really average!

Yes we had that disappointment too.

maldivemoment · 03/01/2025 07:43

@notedbiscuits no, definitely the regular ‘toastie’’ one. Same as others have observed, By the time you’ve sealed the bread & made the little toastie pocket, there’s a lot of wasted bread.

WhatToWrite · 03/01/2025 07:46

Interesting, I have had some similar experiences.

  • Bought a crimpit years ago and it's useless and tiny.
  • Christmas Colin was dry.
  • Bought myself a Bio Ionic curling wand for easy curls/waves. They fall out completely after an hour and my hair smells singed for days after.

I did have the Aldi pork belly bites and they were tasty AF though.

Is it possible to have a link, I'm looking for something like this!

Ellmau · 03/01/2025 07:49

A sellotape dispenser I got from Ocado. It was tiny and I couldn't get it to work at all. Completely useless.

I had to borrow my dad's instead.

Needanewname42 · 03/01/2025 01:53

@Shufflebumnessie what make was your box? We were considering the keter storage boxes for our cushions.

I've got keter, don't cover up, it has vents on both sides and my cushions never go mouldy.

I've had mine years and have NEVER been able to get soft boiled from it. Which is a huge shame because that's the reason I bought it 😭

How hard is it to boil an egg in a pan?

catkatcatkat · 03/01/2025 07:52

BrightOrangeDahlias · 02/01/2025 22:20

If you've still got the receipt, I'd take them back and ask for a refund. They shouldn't go like that if you washed them according to the instructions.

You don’t need a receipt if something is faulty - you’re entitled to a refund.
