Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

That first one is Manzanar internment camp. Probably one of Dorothea Lange's photos.

A horrible scapegoating of Japanese Americans.

Amazing that the actual Japanese signing the surrender on the deck of the Missouri was only just over three years later.

and the Manchurian campaign

I could see that pic 4 was on the steps of the Capitol building so probably a US Presidential inauguration, but guessed wrong - it was Roosevelt

Anyone know what the clifftop kids were up to (today AND yesterday)?

Delatron · 10/08/2025 09:37

Thanks @DeanElderberry I missed that!

When comparing myself to other archaeologists I always think I'm rather bad at the remembering, analysing, recognising, shapes and images stuff that is part of the job, but some of it does seem to have stuck.

Delatron · 12/08/2025 09:35

Always get picture 3 wrong from today. But the fashion looks firmly in the 20s no?

OP posts:
DeanElderberry · 12/08/2025 15:53

I agree. Early 20s at that.

Delatron · 12/08/2025 16:00

Yep that’s what I thought! How strange. I’ll remember for next time. (Hopefully).

A general musing - I am terrible at recognising people. Notorious for the times I repulsed the conversational advances of 'strange men', one of whom was my neighbour, one my cousin, encountered in unfamiliar places. I'm not quite face blind, but I come near it.

So how did I recognise Hirohito yesterday and D W Griffith today? Is it because some time in the past I saw those actual photos, or is it a deduction - Asian man with fancy car and multiple chauffeurs, man with movie camera and post-war hat? One of the things I enjoy about this game is the odd mental processes it reveals.

Norugratsatall · 08/09/2025 15:07

Pic 1 for today had me thinking. Assume those poor girls have bound feet and yet I thought that practice was stopped in the second decade of the 20th century. This picture was taken in 1930s. They look like they’re ‘en pointe’ doing ballet. Very disturbing picture at any rate.

Notyouthful · 16/09/2025 12:33

I wonder if people who got lowish scores for photo 1 thought it was the Berlin Wall. As one of the cars has B on their reg plate - which is B for Berlin.

DeanElderberry · 16/09/2025 13:22

I though it might have been the Berlin wall some time after it was 'open', so that there was no restriction on being near it, but before the developers moved in.

Where was it really?

Olinguito · 17/09/2025 17:16

It was Bucharest. What a shocking image!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 12/10/2025 08:44

Wrong thread!

Notyouthful · 04/11/2025 21:20

You would not believe that photo 1 is older than photo 2.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/11/2025 06:46

Photo 5 today is the control room at Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg - the world's largest model railway. Been there and it's VERY distinctive - but also helped by the model trains on one if the desks 🤣

DeanElderberry · 07/01/2026 12:44

Rich-looking Japanese-looking men should always be checked out in case they are Emperor Hirohito. Particularly if they are on white horses.

Or in fancy motor cars.

And made well known to a younger audience in a Doctor Who episode 😁

indeed

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats
what a good idea!

It wasn't deliberate or planned - but after the first two goes it just seemed to happen naturally today 🤣

Delatron · 18/01/2026 11:00

Ha, good experiment! I did think as I was going through they were all close together apart from one.
