Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

Once or twice when 'playing' an unlimited game I haven't used the slider but just clicked on 1960 all the way down.

Maybe more than twice.

Ha, good experiment! I did think as I was going through they were all close together apart from one.

Done two games submitting the year as 1960. One game I got 1071 and the next one - big fat 0. One photo was a sepia one with trams with ladies wearing those huge hats then Spice Girls meeting Nelson Mandela

Olinguito · 19/01/2026 12:45

Apparently picture 5 is an experimental acoustic device used to detect and locate approaching aircraft, rendered obsolete by the development of radar. Looks very Heath Robinson!

DeanElderberry · 19/01/2026 13:29

That's interesting - and should have occurred to me. Thanks.

DeanElderberry · 05/02/2026 12:33

I'm pretty sure today's image 3 is Franklin Roosevelt, and went with knowing his dates in office and assuming it wasn't a wartime pic. Poor man forcing himself to stand up, propped against the person beside him so people wouldn't realise how wrecked he was.

DeanElderberry · 26/02/2026 09:17

My guess re pic 4 today was that it was the Soviet Afghan war (going by the quality of the B&W image, the baggy trouserings and the hat shapes). No idea of the exact incident, or why I chose a date early in the conflict.

Yes, that exact pic features here: https://mrluptonhistory.co.uk/2020/03/26/what-were-the-consequences-of-the-soviet-invasion-of-afghanistan/

Look, this thread proves we had a three-week repeat on the other pic I mentioned.

Delatron · 26/02/2026 12:10

Ah thanks and well done. I do need to brush up on all the wars/conflicts!

I got super lucky on number 5 today.

I just thought it looked quite recent....no-one wearing masks like we had to at the start of covid, but, the way they are standing quite far apart from each other.

DeanElderberry · 12/03/2026 10:23

Good spot.

or possibly well spotted.

Delatron · 12/03/2026 10:37

That’s a really good point @PurpleKittyKnitting .

I think I I was overly focused on a boot cut and some skinny jeans 😂!

Whist we’re here!

I’m also annoyed about photo 1 -looks way older than the year it says. With the moustaches and outfits.

Yeah....number 1 caught me out....big fat zero for me!

DeanElderberry · 12/03/2026 11:42

It did, but the very slicked hair made me think of O Brother Where Art Thou? which is set mid 30s. ish. and that made me think of the 1936 Olympics.

Still wrong, not as wrong as my first guess would have been.

Delatron · 12/03/2026 14:31

You have a very keen eye @DeanElderberry !

Many many years ago on a field trip a fellow student used the phrase 'the trained eye of the competent archaeologist will discern' about some landscape feature. How we all laughed.

But we did learn to look.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/03/2026 08:29

Partly answering my own question this morning.
I'm pretty sure woman in shades in the centre is Marlene Dietrich. Would explain why it looks so 'filimic'.
But is it 'real' or a scene from a film?

EleanorReally · 16/03/2026 08:50

there is a lot of information about how she arrived in Paris and was in trouble for wearing pants

DeanElderberry · 16/03/2026 09:07

Thank you.

I knew it was an actress but for some reason imagined it was Garbo, and couldn't work it out at all.

DeanElderberry · 16/03/2026 09:28

Sigh, there's a close bracket missing there, fake history hunter didn't get arrested or not arrested.

That's why I try to steer clear of criticising other posters' grammar or spelling choices.

Thank you.

I knew it was an actress but for some reason imagined it was Garbo, and couldn't work it out at all.

I initially wondered if it might have been Lotte Lenya, but then twigged.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/03/2026 07:42

In case anyone is wondering - Picture three today is of the 'Baltic chain' peaceful protests against the Communust regime. I only knew about it because DS2 is studying in Estonia and there's a big section about this in their National Museum that we've visited.

Delatron · 20/03/2026 10:38

Thanks @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats I don’t know why I thought it looked decades older than that! I’ll know for next time.

I suspect it's because the Eastern bloc was still making what were basically 1960s Fiats well into the 1980s and beyond. I think a lot of the Soviet era pictures look 20 or more years older than they turn out to be.

Delatron · 20/03/2026 10:52

Yes they do! I think if I’d have clocked where it was from I may have got closer. I was also focused on a few outfits and I’m crap with cars!

Well I learnt something new today so thank you!
