Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

That's picture 2, which I've seen before and wondered about, so thanks, but I'd also love to know about pic 3.

Which looks like the massed ranks of internet trolls rallying to refute feminism.

The image depicts a LAN party, which is a gathering where people bring their computers or consoles to connect to a local area network (LAN) and play multiplayer games together. These events became popular in the 1990s when broadband internet was not widely available.

Would've been like a sauna in there, hence the topless boys!

Delatron · 15/06/2025 13:30

LAN parties completely passed me by… were they more an America thing? Maybe I was too busy raving 😂..

Though I’m a bit cross as I think I guessed late 90s based on the fact the computers looked exactly like the ones I had at Uni in 1998. And it was quite a but later - 2005 and it did not look like 2005 to me! But I often misremember..

LCD monitors becoming more prevalent than CRT ones, were my clue.

Ooh I don’t think I looked closely enough- they just all looked big and white (clearly not very technical!). Well done.

All the heat from the CPUs, no wonder some of the lads were sweating too.

DeanElderberry · 18/06/2025 07:27

In that first one today (which is amazing, well done the photographer to centre that face in the crowd) the guy they were there to hear was Alfred Hugenberg, a wealthy and influential newspaper tycoon who blamed the Jews for Germany's troubles, wanted to build a more prosperous country, and decided to use that young Adolf Hitler chap to do it.

Yesterday's handsome man who reminded me of young Leonard Nimoy was a gangster

On a forum elsewhere, I know the bloke doesn't cheat.

I got a score of 4849 on today's Chronophoto: 23/06/2025
Round 1: 1000✅
Round 2: 1000✅
Round 3: 849
Round 4: 1000✅
Round 5: 1000✅

DeanElderberry · 23/06/2025 20:23

That's terrifying. Particularly the first one.

tiger2691 · 29/06/2025 08:51

pic 3 today, the guy on the left wearing the lanyard type thing, there is a date on it: 2014. I failed to spot the mobile phone in pic 2 though, muppet!

DeanElderberry · 29/06/2025 09:18

I completely missed the lanyard date though I did zoom. I spotted the phone but put it too early (partly because there was only one).

And was way off with the sinister giant child-eating rat.

tiger2691 · 30/06/2025 08:12

Being a regular Wetherspoons attendee I thought I need to do well on pic 5. Although the drink menus were there, due to regional pricing it was still tricky. But, I recalled a couple of years ago the glass racks were installed above the bar in my local spoons. Bish bash bosh 1000 points to me!

Delatron · 30/06/2025 08:16

@tiger2691 I went for the fact there were quite a few low alcohol/zero alcohol options which seems quite a new thing in the last few years. Full marks on the Weatherspoons round 😂.

Thanks for that, I'll remember next time, it's not the first time we've had that pic!

oh good, getting back on form
to be strictly honest, the nice clear date in one image helped

Olinguito · 08/07/2025 19:01

I must be going mad but I can't see a date anywhere - which photo is it in?

DeanElderberry · 08/07/2025 19:25

The guy doing the ski jump in pic 4 has the location and date of the Olympics he's participating in on the red strip below his number.

Olinguito · 08/07/2025 19:37

Thank you! I could see the location but hadn't twigged that those four circles were the date!

DeanElderberry · 11/07/2025 09:18

Growl growl Che Guevara was in Moscow in 1964 not 1965.

In the first one, the rather meagre Victorian gothic architecture said 'Ireland', which put together with a motor race said - Gordon Bennett!

another thing

I was surprised yesterday that everyone didn't realise the other photo of a pandemic where masks were mandated and some people resisted was the 1918-1920 'Spanish' flu. One of the things about this game is finding out that other people obsess about different stuff.

At least I scored a 1000 on that one.

Photo 5 has a date hidden.....

Photo 5 has a date hidden.....

Indeed I saw that, my original date was only 2 years out though.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/07/2025 15:56

Didn’t see the date - but the heat’s obviously getting to me as in a picture with rows of computer games on sale and advertising the Wii, I dated pic 5 based on the song in the Blondie poster 🤦‍♀️

DeanElderberry · 13/07/2025 10:36

I wonder will next year's 250th USA anniversary celebrations feature the kind of endearing, amateurish, and heartfelt parades that were a feature of the bicentennial year? (pic 4)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/07/2025 08:55

My hint for Photo 2 today.

I hazarded a guess that the photo number on the edge 3212-14 was photo 3212 of 1914. Not foolproof - but quite a common numbering method.

Looked it up afterwards and that was the Panama Canal opening year.

DeanElderberry · 14/07/2025 09:10

Me too - after an interval of thinking 'it couldn't be that obvious, surely?' - picture one was a more traditional mix of skirt length, waist level, innate coal-scuttle shape of hats, and the era of the Louise Brooks bob.
