Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

The age we are influences which images we find instantly recognisable. When I was in junior school one of out teachers must have been born in the late 1920s - still a child during WW2 but aware of what was going on. She had clear memories of the relief and euphoria that greeted Chamberlain getting off that plane and waving the piece of paper signed by him and Hitler - later promising 'Peace in/for our time' - and the terrible let down next year.

Though they do say the time he bought was vital to Britain being able to fight at all.

Delatron · 27/12/2024 09:48

I assumed they wouldn’t have 2 very close years in quick succession..so that threw me for the second photo. I won’t make that mistake again.

Also thought the McDonalds and cars looked much older than mid 90s…!

I nearly got the Wrong War in the second picture but dithered and only got the wrong war. I thought the tyres didn't look WW1 but the way the numbers were written looked odd - and France being active in WW2 never occurred to me, so I guessed Spain. Could have been worse.

They don't stick to spacing the dates out predictably - at least once we had five images from the same decade.

It was also the tyres that said ww2 to me rather than ww1.
Photo 4 - wrong side of the war (again) 😥

Good to know about the date spacing!

First photo got me today.

What war was it? I should have clocked the uniforms looked older (and I thought they did) but I get stuck on wars/battles apart from the obvious ones.

I assumed it was a training exercise rather than a war, and thought it looked more 19thc than 20thc. Not sure why.

Googling in the light of knowledge suggests they may have been the Rifle Corps preparing to go to South Africa and fight the Boers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Royal_Rifle_Corps

Good info - hopefully I am learning something!

Final picture today interested me. Made my usual mistake of just before or just after the war.

But which country is it in? I thought child labour was stopped in the mills in the UK in the very late 19c?

Child labour was legislated re factories etc in 1833 and more generally children under 14 yo in employment, in 1933. Many of the black and white photos, with children working in them look grim.

DeanElderberry · 02/01/2025 10:02

Lewis Hine's photographs of child laborers published between 1908 and 1913 changed America.

I default to 1911 when I see what looks like a Hine photograph.

In 1900, 18 percent of all American workers were under the age of 16.

I'm very interested in history anyway, but I've learned so much over the last couple of years playing this game.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/01/2025 10:12

Thanks @DeanElderberry - I did wonder if this was in the US - I shall now be looking up Lewis Hine 👍

wonderstuff · 02/01/2025 12:00

Any information on photo 4?

DeanElderberry · 02/01/2025 12:20

Probably this - the costume ball at the Winter Palace. I guessed it as pre-1905 revolution, but was a year out.

The brilliant, haunting, movie Russian Ark, watch it NOW if you've never seen it, was filmed in a single long take in the Winter Palace/Hermitage Museum - this immediately reminded me of it.

The woman's headdress is called a kokoshnik, which I'll remember for about 20 minutes.

Delatron · 02/01/2025 13:03

Some interesting photos today. I had a shocker! The first picture? The clothes seemed more modern than 1910 especially the women.

OP posts:
DeanElderberry · 02/01/2025 13:08

No women that I can see.

Notyouthful · 02/01/2025 13:50

One thing to learn - USA Presidents and their years of their tenure.

At least once every 10 days, get a US President in the photos or presidential campaign.

Play a couple of the standard game daily and found a few inauguration ceremonies.

You remind me of the time I was in Edinburgh, musing absentmindedly on how many dowdy and very plain middle aged women I'd seen, before realising they were the gentlemen of the Scottish Geological Society wearing their best kilts for a formal dinner.

Delatron · 02/01/2025 15:27

Love it @DeanElderberry at least nobody else realised my faux pas! Need to look more closely next time.

Picture 3 today is T E Lawrence 'of Arabia' and others at the Conference of Versailles, where much of what has plagued the Middle East ever since was set rolling. That picture, not colourised but with everyone named, is about a third of the way down this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._E._Lawrence

I was surprised by Picture 1, I didn't think people were still being so blasé about the war that late (though come to think of, the girls in Angela Brasil's books would have been very happy with dances and parties).

Delatron · 07/01/2025 08:46

The second photo today?

That did not look like the 80s at all. I guess the chopper bikes. Maybe the woman’s hair and the black and white foiled me. I went early 70s. Initially I thought 50s until I looked closer.

OP posts:
DeanElderberry · 07/01/2025 09:33

I went 70s as well, for the same reason and the boy's socks.

Kicking myself for getting the Berlin airlift wrong (though it did continue into the year I guessed).
