Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

Thanks both.

Highlandhardrain · 09/04/2025 09:09

How did you find more info about the photos used? Is it on Chronophoto or did you just do an image search? Some of the photos are very intriguing.

DeanElderberry · 09/04/2025 09:16

I searched for

"1970 photo of african american bookshop"

That took me to the photos of Harlem and gave me the name of the shop

So I refined the next search to

"1970 photo of national memorial african american bookstore"

That gave me a side bar link to Lewis Michaux

I still know nothing about that first image, and I'd love to learn more about the weird ?flying machine and the man walking away with his notebook..

SabreIsMyFave · 09/04/2025 09:48

@DeanElderberry In answer to your question on the other thread...

I've just googled it (well, image searched,) and pic 1 features the crash of a navy plane. On Haynes Point, (Can't find exactly where but I think it's the USA.)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/04/2025 08:14

@DeanElderberry - not surprised you had a 'wrong war' issue today. Three pictures all within the same few years. I was doubting myself.
Would love to know the story behind photo 4. It almost looks staged.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/05/2025 07:04

Photo 3 today - there's a date on one of the theatre posters. Took me a while to spot it 😁.

Notyouthful · 07/05/2025 08:55

On yesterday’s photo 5. There were 4 men. One I recognised was Tom Jones. Who were the others?

Olinguito · 07/05/2025 20:06

@Notyouthful I think they were his band members at the time, but I don't know their names.

tiger2691 · 12/05/2025 07:46

Pic 4 today, noted the man in the mask so went with 2021 and scored zero.

Pic 4 today, noted the man in the mask so went with 2021 and scored zero.

Some countries like China, S Korea wore masks for years for pollution.

Pic 3 is in Nuremburg as did a Google Lens on the church.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/05/2025 08:30

Photo 2 - there is a HUGE hint in the photo.
Concentrate on the car bonnet.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/05/2025 08:16

Photo 1 today - the horrific accident and fire in the background is the clue. The worst ever accident in motor racing (killing over 80 spectators and injuring another 200 odd) at the Le Mans 24 hour race.

tiger2691 · 20/05/2025 08:43

I saw a video of that a few weeks ago, couldn't remember the year, a truly awful accident and large loss of lives.

Pic 2 today, my wife managed to guess 1985, one pic I'm sure 99% of people playing will guess correctly.

Delatron · 20/05/2025 08:50

Got the first one and then was an idiot with the second 😭.

The last one from NASA today.

Anyone think the technology looked a bit older than 6 years ago? It all looked a bit messy - no wireless mouses, the keyboards looked a bit old fashioned. Still paper folders around. Loads of wires. I would have thought it would be more slick! The thin screens may be more modern than I am remembering but we’ve had thin screens for a while. I would have said no later that around 2012. Though I am not great with technology and cars!

OP posts:
Highlandhardrain · 23/05/2025 14:30

Yes this one confused me - thought NASA might look a bit more cutting edge!

Delatron · 23/05/2025 16:13

Yes exactly! It’s NASA in 2019 - surely it would look more impressive. Maybe less wires!

I started with remembering that flat screens were just starting at work in 2004, and a lot of us still had big clunky monitors for years. But then we weren't NASA, I assumed that the lack of mobile phones might be a security thing. Maybe the paper and staplers were too. What was actually showing on the screens looked complex and multi-agency. I'm always amazed at all the drinks on desks.

Basically not a clue, amazed I was only 8 years out.

Even more amazed at dating grumpy lady in pic one correctly - how did I do that?

Notyouthful · 28/05/2025 16:12

Last photo today has a date on it.

Photo 2 is Leeds. Obviously changed a lot since then. Where Chelsea Girl and Alliance Building Society were, the buildings above the shop signages are unchanged. Probably changed even more since then https://www.google.com/maps/@53.7972333,-1.5451487,3a,75y,194.77h,85.38t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1snzvSRdMJukeEDm__vuudqg!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D4.62233160473329%26panoid%3DnzvSRdMJukeEDm__vuudqg%26yaw%3D194.7740015303512!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDUyNi4wIKXMDSoJLDEwMjExNDUzSAFQAw%3D%3D

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/06/2025 08:38

Classic 'wrong war' photo today.
My reasoning today was the French place name on the photo frame. Massive destruction in France or Belgium is most likely to be in WW1, as against Germany or Britain where it would indicate WW2.
Not exclusively correct but it worked for me today.

DeanElderberry · 10/06/2025 08:05

The Hooverville in today's pic 2 was in Seattle.

https://depts.washington.edu/depress/hooverville_photographs.shtml

I'm not sure whether they are confident about the 1933 date (have not yet read everything in the link) - it was there for a decade - the economy was only rescued by the war. Which is scary.

tiger2691 · 15/06/2025 08:50

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats
Anyone know anything about photo 3? A curious scene.
............................
Inside the "Granada Cocktail Bar & Piano Lounge" on Monroe Street in Cleveland, Ohio (1973)

DeanElderberry · 15/06/2025 09:24

That's picture 2, which I've seen before and wondered about, so thanks, but I'd also love to know about pic 3.

Which looks like the massed ranks of internet trolls rallying to refute feminism.

DeanElderberry · 15/06/2025 09:39

Piano bar reminded me of Amarie in Star Trek TNG Unification https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Amarie.

It also reminded me of my one time in Cleveland in a rather different bar, where I caused massive consternation by asking for a glass of wine. They eventually located a bottle, which had clearly been open for a long long time, to the extent that I had to ask for the rest room (yes really, I'd learned the language before travelling) and pour it down the drain.
