Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

And I think as I got the 4th one so wrong with the car shape (I thought the cars looked from the 70s) though the outfits looked 80s and the black and white, I went too far the the other way with the cars in the distance.

It was just after the Berlin wall came down, and Ossies (with their Trabants) were anxious to make money. And were often viewed (cars and people) with just the amused condescension showed by the young couple (probably Wessies).

As far as I can see it's this model - there is a lot of Trabant stuff out there. I was in Berlin for a short work trip in 1993 and there were still lots of them there, with smelly engines.

When the first country - was it Hungary? opened its border in 1989, these were the cars the East Germans queued there in. It was the most extraordinary time.

I've realised since starting doing this game that younger people have no idea how the existence of the 'iron curtain' loomed over our lives and our imaginations.

If you're into Chinese horoscopes, remember it was another Snake year.

Delatron · 02/02/2025 12:30

Thanks @DeanElderberry that all
makes sense. Interesting about the Trabants - I had no idea.

I love Berlin. But it wasn’t until 2007 I think that I visited.

Pic 4 today, I think the bloke is photoshopped into image, plus we've had that pic before.

Delatron · 07/02/2025 08:34

We have had that image before - but I was still a few years out! Maybe less than last time…

He does look photoshopped or maybe it’s the light. I’m no photography expert!

Vaguely creepy Canadian - maybe that's what's 'wrong' with it, everyone else is in shade deep enough that lamps are very visible. Even if spot- or flash- lit I'd expect some shadows to be cast somewhere - behind the arm maybe, or the flag.

And yes, we've seen it recently. I nearly remembered the date.

tiger2691 · 08/02/2025 06:17

Pic 1, had it before, that lady in red, wow.

Notyouthful · 09/02/2025 12:45

There was a hint of which team the Super Bowl champions and looked up when they won it and put down the wrong year.....

Ooh lots of titfers in last pick...

Notyouthful · 12/02/2025 10:42

Just to say I wasn't unsure of when two photos but in each one, there was something which narrowed down the range.....

Delatron · 15/02/2025 10:16

I’m not doing well with my pre-1920s fashions. So there’s 17 years between photo 1 and photo 4 but fashions look similar to me. I went too early on photo 1 then that influenced me to go too late on photo 4!

DeanElderberry · 15/02/2025 10:50

Photo 1 is odd all round. The clothes look very old-fashioned, but what is happening? The man in the clerical collar in the middle suggests some sort of Anglican or low-church picnic. Can't be that low though, someone is holding up a playing card. And one boy seems to be in a swimsuit. The boys with ribbons and medals might just have been confirmed - or maybe signed the pledge. And what about the two women in headscarves?

The date is the least of the confusion.

DeanElderberry · 15/02/2025 10:53

Three women in headscarves, ranged around the lady in the immense hat. I wonder are they refugees from somewhere?

Delatron · 15/02/2025 10:57

You have such good attention to detail @DeanElderberry - you’re right it’s such a strange photo some smart/ some in less wealthy clothes. You could be right about some being refugees.

I always find it bizarre that in those days people didn’t appear to smile for photos…!

I agree, looks grim way back.

DeanElderberry · 22/02/2025 17:55

Okay, today's photo 3, the burning of the Customs House in Dublin, fine, we all know that, but what is going on in photo 2?

The people on the right - uniform-man, hat-man, hat-woman, look late 30s, 1940s, but the man with the gaiters and long side whiskers looks Edwardian at latest? And what is the collapsed structure? Does anyone have a clue?

Workisntworking · 22/02/2025 18:17

I think I must have different photos!

I had a picture that included a cinema showing films such Anal Intruders!
Which I was not expecting!!

Olinguito · 22/02/2025 19:08

All I can find out about photo 2 is that it's a scene from the Spanish Civil War.

@Workisntworking are you selecting the daily game? Your version sounds quite different!

Workisntworking · 22/02/2025 19:21

I've just done it again - I must have pressed a different button the first time as second time around my pictures seem to tally - although that party photo was a collection of horrors!

The first time I did it and saw the cinema I thought that might help if I've seen the film advertised - but it wasn't really my genre! Confused

DeanElderberry · 22/02/2025 19:49

Spanish civil war makes sense date-wise and explains why the man at the back on the left is so dark-skinned.

I looked at the party again - Obviously I'd seen Donald and is-it-Melania first time but I completely missed Jeffrey and Ghislaine. Who are the other pair?

eep

DeanElderberry · 22/02/2025 19:51

Oh, and I've seen the sex-cinemas on previous days - as you say, film titles not much help - bit too 'niche'!

DeanElderberry · 22/02/2025 20:08

I've just realised that's HRH back when he was less jowly.

Dear God that is quite a photo.

Notyouthful · 24/02/2025 17:10

What's with the couple wanting to buy a sword???
I doubt the photo 5 was taken at that year. The console, kid playing guitar with a splatter guard...
