Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

Picture 4 today? Any idea on the story behind it? Seems lots of us were a bit out on that photo.

Did not look like the 30s to me. I went for 50s which on closer inspection did look too late. Though tricky to tell fashions when everyone was knee deep in water so only had building//hairstyles and vehicles to look at. Thought the school bus looked a little later.

No Idea, i was a bit hungover and said 1920!

DeanElderberry · 15/01/2025 19:42

I went for 1948, mostly because of the bloke's swimming trunks.

And I did so well with the subway aliens yesterday.

DeanElderberry · 17/01/2025 10:42

We have had the scantily clad ladies in picture 4 before, and it strikes me that their figures and body shapes were probably favoured by male viewers who in their earlier lives had usually seen women as solid fabric from neck to toe. Also that the figures and body shapes are those of fit young women who walked or cycled everywhere.

The cult of extremely thin was just around the corner.

tiger2691 · 17/01/2025 10:54

My average score per pic today was 924, cant see me ever bettering that. Pic 5 was an evil one, no idea why I went for 1997 instead of 1998, which would've scored me a 1000. 1998 is one of my default years, I think I was hedging my bets, as originally I was going to go 1995.

It's quite rare for me to get a chance to score over 4500, many times the 5th pic has fucked me up, after 4 good scores, I was far from certain, and tried to age the camera below, I had nothing else to go on

You did brilliantly anyway!

You did brilliantly anyway!

This person elsewhere (football club forum) did even better, an average of 954.4 per pic!

Gosh, I did terribly today. I annoyingly considered a date on a couple of them then changed my mind and was closer on the first guess. I thought the skirt on the woman on the first picture was too short for 1910s but was clearly wrong!

Notyouthful · 18/01/2025 11:46

The 4th photo has been on before.

DeanElderberry · 18/01/2025 17:17

I don't think it's a skirt - more some kind of baggy bloomers/knickerbockers mash-up like the ones in one of the last pictures on this - there's lots of good pictures there but sadly not enough exact dates for training the eye - better than nothing though.

But again, I blessed my Murdoch Mysteries habit.

Photo 3 is strange as the bloke on the left (in the white top) looks he could be in a later photo.

DeanElderberry · 22/01/2025 16:24

The men's clothes would have got me nowhere there - I went on the hairstyles of the girl behind white top man and the girl in the white dress - and on her shoes and the dress itself. Also on the giant ball - I have vague memories of seeing similar things.

Still four years out, but could have been so much worse.

Delatron · 22/01/2025 17:05

Ah yes, good job I didn’t see him! I would have over thought it. Trying to go with my first instinct these days. Not sure if it’s working..

Photo 2 today. (And yes seen this one before)
I was nowhere near the given date (and so far nor is anyone else)
Even the bike in the picture looks more modern than the date given.
Maybe it's just that US culture was so different than that of the UK in that period?

Delatron · 26/01/2025 11:18

Yes I got a fat 0 for that photo. Did not look that old to me even tricking us with the colour.

Also, I get that it’s a different country - but the first photo - I dated those computers from the late 90s when I was at uni - not as late as 2013. Tough today.

was the beach scene artificially colorised? There was plenty of colour photography in the 1940s, though that does look very clear - but a professional photographer doing a story could have used it, or even an enthusiastic and well-off amateur. I'd like to think that the young woman with the engagement ring genuinely matched her lipstick and her (possibly home-made) playsuit.

she's here again, in picture 48, with a different young man, probably, by body language, her fiancée. I hope they had a happy life together.

I agree about those computers in picture 1 - I put them in the late 80s, shows how much I (don't) know.

I think with the beach scene it’s also the caps that threw me as it’s hard to get a proper look at the hairstyles..

The colours look very clear and vivid.

Loved picture 3 today. Lucky guess at the date - but it's the first time I've seen the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster) reach out his noodly tentacles to chronophoto 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I shall put my tin hat colander back on and hide. 🤣

Olinguito · 27/01/2025 18:52

I wondered what on earth that was - I'd never heard of Pastafarianism before!

Notyouthful · 31/01/2025 09:59

A hint based on the actual answers today. Two have the same year. Which I have not come across before.

DeanElderberry · 02/02/2025 08:24

I found today's difficult - hooray for Trabant taxis.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/02/2025 08:35

There is a vehicle hint in the 5th picture too. The shape of the cars in the distant car park are very much 'of a time'.

DeanElderberry · 02/02/2025 08:40

I saw them, dithered, and got it wrong. hey ho.

Delatron · 02/02/2025 10:13

I did very badly today. Maybe I need to brush up on my cars.

My memory may be fading me but I do not recall the 90s looking like that! Though on closer inspection I see it’s a different country. I’m going to blame my hangover and rushing through them!
