Don’t open this thread until you’ve guessed for the day!

Not great from me today. A couple of the outfits in the first one (on the ladies) looked older decades than the photo was. Should have focused more on the men!

Pissed off with the library sale photo today. Seen it before and still years off...

DeanElderberry · 07/01/2025 09:51

I'm annoyed with the last one (is it Hong Kong btw, or where?) which we've had very recently.

tiger2691 · 07/01/2025 09:58

I went 70s as well, maybe I got put off by.....

I also got the house party photo wrong. Smoking culture has changed so quickly!

DeanElderberry · 07/01/2025 11:04

Having got 2 wrong I then thought I got a Stranger Things vibe for the cheesecloth shirt of the woman in the queue, so looked at Google's images for a "Stranger Things bikes" search and there they are. I share slight suspicion as to the purity of the photographer's intentions.

Notyouthful · 08/01/2025 11:45

Most got screwed up with the last photo.

Delatron · 08/01/2025 12:05

Yeah initially I was quite pleased as I thought it might be the building of the
Hoover Dam. But then the date was out. Impossible to know what year or what was going on so it was a stab in the dark really

I completely messed up picture 3 by focusing on the car and not the glaring out of gas sign!!

I made my dam guess based on the misapprehension that hard hats on site is a 'recent' thing. And was a clean half-century out. But then had a pleasant half hour reading about Grand Coulee.

Delatron · 08/01/2025 15:54

Just educated myself about the Grand Coulee dam too! Makes for interesting reading and I’ve learnt something today.

Does anyone know what picture 5 is about? It looks as though it's in a prison.

Notyouthful · 10/01/2025 11:40

Its a prison.

Photo 3 is outside Vilnius Cathedral, Lithuania. The building in the centre is the bell tower.

Been there.

I have found the story behind the photo. Show it tomorrow to prevent spoilers

DeanElderberry · 10/01/2025 16:46

The 1920 date for picture 5 seems too late - trawling the internet I get a 'ca 1920s' date for it - and a Washington DC location.
I wonder is it the Suffragists who were held in Occuquan workhouse in 1917 pictured either at the time or (in their clothes from that time) later on for some kind of statement?
The door behind Lucy Burns in this link looks the same.

I had a few lucky guesses today. Thought the prison picture looked a bit older than early 20s then changed my mind at the last moment.

Got the Lithuanian flag but no idea what was happening and I was distracted by a few 80s looking moustaches so went too early for that one.

Notyouthful · 11/01/2025 09:57

Today's pic 2 has stumped everyone so far. Photo looks too crisp for the actual year.

Yesterday's photo 3 with the coffin going into Vilnius Cathedral is one of the dead from this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_Events. Don't forget that eastern Europe fashions are behind the times of western Europe.

Went to Lithuania in 2018 and found it weird that they were celebrating 100 years of independence, when infact for 46 of those years, it was under Soviet rule between 1944-90. Loads of signs and flags with LT100 doted about the country.

Delatron · 11/01/2025 10:10

Yep @Notyouthful I agree about photo 2. I guessed a later decade!

Interesting facts about Lithuania. I’ve been caught out quite a few times by outdated fashions from Eastern Europe.

Love that we’re learning about history every day!

I guessed post-war on picture 2 and was way out. Yesterday's Lithuanian one I was slightly right but guessed 1989, thinking of those weeks when amazing things were happening, so about 15 or 16 months out, which for the sake of the game was 2 years.

Today's celebration one was a real trap for the unwary, with the coronation happening a year after the late Queen's accession.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/01/2025 08:31

Well it didn't take long for photo one to be repeated. I know what it is now🤣.

DeanElderberry · 12/01/2025 09:30

Indeed - I think they've been repeating more frequently lately. That Paris flood one rumbles round fairly regularly too.

I wonder will we get the man with the ladder again soon?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/01/2025 10:00

Tick - Paris flood for next time 🤣

I remember it from last time and I was still 5 years out!

I know, right? I can't for the life of me remember ladder man's date either. I don't think we ever learned what he was doing. Maybe we'll never see him again.

Notyouthful · 12/01/2025 12:18

The first photo was done before and still couldn't remember the year and got big fat zero.

tiger2691 · 12/01/2025 13:11

I was an idiot on pic 1 today, I immediately went for the Americans leaving Vietnam (which was almost certainly later anyway), as I was pressing the submit button I was like nope, thats 1989, China, Tiananmen square and all that. Alas too late, the button was pressed!

Delatron · 15/01/2025 11:14

Picture 4 today? Any idea on the story behind it? Seems lots of us were a bit out on that photo.

Did not look like the 30s to me. I went for 50s which on closer inspection did look too late. Though tricky to tell fashions when everyone was knee deep in water so only had building//hairstyles and vehicles to look at. Thought the school bus looked a little later.
