Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

Nish Kumar - just painful
Holly Walsh - didn't even realise she was supposed to be a comedian
Russel Brand - he was funny back in the day, but long before the rape revelations, I thought he had lost his touch. I don't think he knew how to age out of the young bohemian lothario identity.
Joel Dommett - I want to like him (and do as a presenter) but he can be so awkward.

Odd that very few have listed Ricky Gervais. Every other time this question is asked on MN he’s pretty much top of the list.

I saw him earlier this year and thought he was great!

Kensingswell · 20/12/2024 23:49

I've always found Ricky Gervais too bitter. I don't enjoy him.

Not Ashling Bea or Michael McIntyre

But I love (and like) Billy Connolly

And nobody's mentioned him yet but Tommy Tiernan is very funny. Maybe he and his humour don't travel well.

I never found Jack Dee funny.

But comedy is a bit like a hairstyle, not everyone has the same taste.

I've seen Michael Mcintyre live and would do so again. I found him funny.

Lavenderblossoms · 20/12/2024 23:49

Can't stand Jimmy Carr and his wanky laugh.

IWillAlwaysBeinaClubWithYouin1973 · 20/12/2024 23:50

Someone should have done a spreadsheet early doors ...

Lavenderblossoms · 20/12/2024 23:54

Also Rosie Jones.

I know I aren't supposed to say this but I find it difficult to understand her at times. I don't know if it's my ADHD as I'm trying to concentrate on what's she saying but my brain finds it hard to filter it. I don't have a hearing problem but I do have a problem with my brain filtering what I am hearing. Almost like when I'm in a room and someone is trying to tell me something and I can't hear them and it's too noisy and hurts my brain trying to concentrate.

I don't wish to be hurtful. I find it really good she has an equal opportunity to do the job she loves.

Haven't read the whole thread but hopefully we've agreed that Bob Mortimer is the funniest person currently alive?

ProvincialLady24 · 20/12/2024 23:55

Jim Davidson and similar make my skin crawl.

buzzy1 · 20/12/2024 23:56

Joe Wilkinson is supremely unfunny

ForeverSkys · 20/12/2024 23:57

This year saw Peter Kay and he wasn't very good. But then saw Jimmy Carr and he was very good and going to see him again next year

Yes he is hilarious! And his life stories on Would I lie to you are jaw dropping!

Can't stand Jimmy Carr and his wanky laugh.

Aw, l know that laugh, sounds like a donkey.
His humour, he just tries too hard to shock. He wants to see people laugh, when they know they really shouldn’t.

ScruffMuffin · 21/12/2024 00:09

Ohhh, who was that grumpy, long-haired American guy who was on Cats Does Countdown a few times? He was one of the most humour-free individuals ever to grace the small screen.

COPPER3 · 21/12/2024 00:11

Russel Brand
Peter Kay - due to his disappointing and boring tour this year

izzywizzydizzy · 21/12/2024 00:12

David Walliams
Matt Lucas
Ricky Gervais
Brendan O'Carroll
Jim Davison
Jimmy Carr
Rosie Jones
Alasdair Beckett-King
Tommy cooper
Victor Borge
Morecambe and Wise

Mnetcurious · 21/12/2024 00:19

Rosie Jones for sure.
Rob Beckett ( he’s not so bad off the cuff but saw his recent stand up on TV and didn’t laugh once).
Lou Sanders.
Joe Wilkinson
Jimmy Carr.

Frith2013 · 21/12/2024 00:20

I think there will be an investigation about Russell Kane in the future. (Apologies to him if he just seems incredibly creepy and is in fact perfectly normal).

YellowGuido · 21/12/2024 00:21

Agree with quite a few already posted, though I personally love James Acaster, Russell Howard, Sarah Millican and Josh Widdecombe. Haven’t seen them mentioned yet, but adding Paul Smith and Matt Rife to the ‘hate’ list - both awful!!!
Also dislike Jason Manford - he seems like a nice chap but his material is full of copied jokes from other places…

JustCrow · 21/12/2024 00:21

Poor old Rosie Jones is getting a pasting but I agree she’s about as funny as piles.

I loved Kerry Godliman in Derek and Afterlife as an actress and fully expected to like her the first time I saw her as a stand up, and was genuinely dismayed to discover I found her intensely dislikeable and very unfunny.

Eddie Izzard has never been funny. Nor has Russell Howard.

Ricky Gervais is a genius writer and actor but I don’t like him as a stand up.

Frith2013 · 21/12/2024 00:24

I do like Sara Pascoe (and her book) but somehow she enunciates every syllable of every word but also sounds like a 5 year old and it distracts me too much.

She's another one who I didn't realise was supposed to be a comedian.

I've never found anything Lee Mack says funny

Have you never watched him on WILTY? He’s so quick witted, has us laughing constantly.

DianaRiggsCatsuit · 21/12/2024 00:30

Mintupp · 20/12/2024 18:45

Michael macintyre - I just find him a bit dull

Irritating more like!

marmia1234 · 21/12/2024 00:33

I've skimmed, and I think nobody has mentioned the worst of all.
Kathy Lette. She lives in England but was born in Australia and wrote a really good book ( with a friend) called Puberty Blues. It was great. That was the end of it.
She still does some standup shows but mostly writes atrocious books that are supposed to be funny. Basically she puts a pun ( mostly sexual ) in about every third sentence. They are truly horrificly bad. She can't mention anything round without referring to balls, sausages, vessels. You get it. It's just so damn tedious.

Oh and I used to like Adam Hills when he hosted a show her in Aus called Spicks and Specks but I've see him on Last Leg and he seems a bit of a wanker now.
Ross Noble never seems to leave our shores - can you please take him and his awful hair back. Ta
