Who has this virus? Like a bad cold on steroids

I think this is Day 8 and it's never ending. I usually pick up after day 3 of a head cold but this just seems to be gathering momentum. Sneezing, nose either congested or running like a tap even at 2 am.

I teach and had a rubbish week last week but I think I will have to phone in sick if I'm not feeling better by this time tomorrow.

Strange how it affects some of us so badly and others sail through or just have a light cold.

QuestionableMouse · 11/12/2024 15:00

Not being awful, but have you all heard of a new little virus called Covid? The newer strains are utterly awful.

Oh God I feel for you. I am dreading Christmas too. I keep thinking, 'There are SO many people this year' when there aren't. Just DS2 plus girlfriend and their cat, DS1 and a mate of his, then later, DS1's partner coming for a week. Never more than 6 around the table and yet I am absolutely shattered in advance at the thought.

It's got so bad, DH has started doing housework and that really is a first Grin (To be fair to him, he does most of the shopping, cooking, gardening and taxiing but I do the tidying and cleaning only no one has done that for a fortnight and the house was looking like a student squat.

Mine isn't helped by DH being disabled and I'm his carer. Honestly the house is a tip, nothing is ready for Christmas. I hope the visitors are ready to roll their sleeves up. I guess no one will be coming next year.😂

That sounds so tough @TheignT - can he help at all with non physical stuff like ordering presents online? I'm doing all shopping online. If Amazon or ebay don't have it, they won't get it. I usually make my own wreath every year. Bought one this year. Just too tired to do anything.

I try to remind myself that I care more than young adult DC do how clean the house is. If I can do a quick mop, polish and hoover, and a quick scoot round the bathrooms and change their bedding before they arrive, that's enough. Lots of candlelight and their favourite snacks and they probably won't even notice if the place is a bit of a pickle.

And yes, I agree with you @TheignT - this year they'll be rolling up their sleeves and helping to wash up.

Do you think this is Covid? I had Covid in October, I thought that was bad enough. And the lovely norovirus in August and a cold in September. I am never this ill. Then end of November sore throat - tonsillitis so bad I was crying with pain and eating double the recommended dose of painkillers, not even touching it. Never felt worse. Two weeks later I am still weak and shivery and dizzy and still have a slightly sore throat and endless cough. But it never occurred to me that it could be Covid if I had it badly just two months ago.

Yeah, I think a lot of current "colds" are Covid.

Oistinemup · 11/12/2024 19:17

Mine isn’t Covid . I tested at the start last Friday and then again last night.

QuestionableMouse · 11/12/2024 19:31

The tests are no longer 100% reliable because there's so many new strains apparently!

Gorgonemilezola · 11/12/2024 19:34

massistar · 08/12/2024 09:35

I've just gotten over this after 3 weeks!! Have never had a cold last that long. So much snot.. 🤢

Is anyone doing Covid tests? I had these symptoms with Covid but particularly the snot 🤢. It was like green glue and it just kept coming......
Horrible lethargy, muffled hearing which lasted for months.

ProbableDoris · 11/12/2024 19:39

Mine didn’t feel anything like my previous bout of Covid - no fever/chills, just a cough which started three bloody weeks ago and is still going, albeit not as bad, and then rivers of snot which are also subsiding finally. The cough did make me think Covid but I only tested at the weekend so might not be contagious any more. Or the tests don’t work for that strain.

PiggyPigalle · 11/12/2024 19:40

Why do people put up with colds when taking Vitamin D3 means you don't have to?
My last cold was Jan 2nd 2014 and that was due to my not taking it, as I'd been moving house, divorce etc. Next day I flew to the Arctic and it went. Whether due to remnants of D3 or the dry air up there, who knows.
I used to hate getting a cold. I remember the Vick spray to shorten them. Now I'd be furious to get one, but I don't believe I will.

WhatTheFuk · 11/12/2024 19:47

It's covid. Getting tired of this constant cycle now. Surely everyone else is. Every time we catch it, chemo stops again, and cancer progresses. 🥹

But I do take Vit D3. And Vicks. Some years I am not ill at all. This year I have been very ill once a month for the last four months. It's either a strain of viruses and Covid that I'm susceptible to or something else has lowered my immunity this year.

Thegrassroots26 · 11/12/2024 20:13

I work in a secondary school and ever since starting there a few years ago I get ill at this time or year (last two years Covid) sometimes in January. This has been the worst year yet though. I guess previous years we had the vaccines… made it less severe?

LuckysDadsHat · 11/12/2024 20:26

It's the sheer amount of snot that is getting me! I have never had this amount of snot with a cold ever! Just breathing is making it pour out of my nose. I have done 4 covid tests over 2 weeks and all negative. Daughter also has it and hers are negative too. Frustrating.

Patienceinshortsupply · 11/12/2024 20:36

I'm on day 13 or 14. Still got blocked sinuses and hacking cough in spite of 7 days on Doxycyline. I am back at work but I'm absolutely exhausted. Done 2 Covid tests at home and one at GP surgery - def not Covid, the nurse I saw said they've been inundated and that it's just a nasty cold virus doing the rounds. DH now going down with it so it's going to be a fun christmas in this house Hmm

Thanks. To be honest my kids, their partners and GC are all getting money this year. Bit of a cop out but they all seem happy. I have done a Sainsbury's order so we won't stave. I do have to get the cards done, hope he will help with that but again it will be essential cards only.

Yes to not doing it all next year.

Congratulations? 🙄

MrsSethGecko · 11/12/2024 20:48

I do take vitamin D3. I haven't felt this bad for a long time- I had COVID once in 2022 and that wasn't as awful as this (which has tested negative for COVID).

I feel a lot better this evening, much more lively.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 11/12/2024 22:13

Day 21 for me
Still coughing but not as bad. Feel exhausted after work and last night came home and went to bed at 8 o clock.
Ds (36) who lives with me has the start of it now. The cough and the snot. Ugh it's never ending.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 11/12/2024 22:14

Had covid in 2023 and didn't feel this bad. Was over it in a week.

Patienceinshortsupply · 11/12/2024 22:25

I'm type 2 diabetic so it's hit me hard anyway but would agree that I was less unwell with Covid both times. This is the gift that keeps on giving Hmm

imfae · 11/12/2024 23:11

I don't have the same symptoms as most of you . Had what felt like a head cold , cough , sore throat , achey , emotional but other stuff going on .Lacking in energy .

Felt better on Sunday but then managed to turn / sprain slightly my ankle . Concentrated on that , swelling & pain gone down but I am now absolutely shattered again and lymph nodes are enlarged .
I did an old out of date Covid test - but was negative . Knew that was a possibility even if I had it , but thought if I did get a positive it couldn't be a false positive .
It definitely feels viral , but no snotty nose / high temp .
Hope everyone feels better soon .

Holdingspace · 12/12/2024 07:53

Where is everyone based? I’m North East.

It started last week with sore throat that kept coming and going, runny nose on one side and random joint pain. Monday my full body ached and by Tuesday I struggled to get up out of bed. Extremely nauseous and can’t eat, dizzy when standing and headache.

I had similar in July which left me with 6 weeks of extreme fatigue and chronic infections which I’ve been on near constant antibiotics for. I was just turning a corner too when this hit 😞

Was never, ever poorly before and fighting fit.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 12/12/2024 08:15

I m in the South East. Everyone is coughing and sneezing here. But back home (NE Scotland) my mum says it's everywhere too so all the UK may be under the gloom of grotty plague.
