Who has this virus? Like a bad cold on steroids

I think this is Day 8 and it's never ending. I usually pick up after day 3 of a head cold but this just seems to be gathering momentum. Sneezing, nose either congested or running like a tap even at 2 am.

I teach and had a rubbish week last week but I think I will have to phone in sick if I'm not feeling better by this time tomorrow.

I think it's heading my way au and I really hope it isn't. I've felt ropey for the last 2 weeks or so, had my bloods checked as I suffer with low B12 and suspected it was the cause and I was right - I'm booked in tomorrow morning for a B12 injection. I've had brief periods now and again of chills (like that phrase, 'someone has just walked over my grave'), and just felt exhausted and rubbish. Monday I was so bloated and had wind, Tuesday I was more exhausted and this morning I've had a hard stomach and then a few loose bowel movements. Taken immodium and praying that keeps it all away!

MrsSethGecko · 18/12/2024 11:16

Still going here. Sinuses are awful even with massage and my cough is not much better. I don't feel as bad but in the mornings I'm very sweaty and exhausted.

LostittoBostik · 18/12/2024 13:25

Pedant alert: if you were on steroids, the symptoms of a common cold would be significantly reduced

Still taking my Vitamin C and zinc and for the first time in 2 months I really think I'm getting better. I did three loads of washing, wrapped the Christmas presents, went to Sainsbury's and got some shopping and made a casserole. As I said before don't know if the vitamin C and zinc are doing it or if it is a coincidence but I am going to keep taking them.

Glitterboobz · 19/12/2024 07:31

Night sweats. That's the latest symptom. I've been cold in bed so taking a hot water bottle then waking up drenched in sweat.

Username056 · 19/12/2024 08:03

Sorry for all those still suffering with this awful virus. I’ve managed to get back to something resembling my normal routine now but I still have a cough and am finding I can’t take a full deep breath without coughing especially at night.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/12/2024 08:55

Mine turned into a chest infection. I have been on antibiotics since Monday and I think this morning at long last I am starting to feel a bit better.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 19/12/2024 09:19

My cold improved and then came back with a vengeance and it feels more like proper flu
now! I’ve a high temperature, body aches, vomited yesterday, no appetite, no energy. Had my flu jab too!

Had to phone in sick which I never do, this is an awful virus.

SereneCapybara · 19/12/2024 09:25

ShiftySquirrel · 15/12/2024 22:29

I've had it too, probably three weeks so far. Every time I think it's nearly gone it comes back as sore throat, coughing or awful neck ache.

I took a week off at its worst. Lots of snot and coughing, totally blocked sinuses, no taste, lethargy, bit achy, but not terrible.

I had no temperature, did one (negative) COVID test and had a flu jab in September, so it's either a nasty virus or COVID by disguise.

I'm also a TA, it's a breeding ground of germs in school- the teachers and TAs and children are all unwell and we break up late this year.

@ShiftySquirrel I had that bad neck ache too. I thought I'd just slept awkwardly until I saw your post.

To every one who has had this or has it now - I wish you a really speedy recovery and please go gently afterwards. Post viral fatigue is a serious problem - don't bust a gut at Christmas and spend the next three years recovering. (Been there, done that. It was a mistake.)

xteac · 19/12/2024 09:38

I think I've got this, if so something that helps is using one of the 'first response' sprays religiously. Vicks do one that has a menthol in that burns a bit, other ones are more gentle - all contain carageenan extract and saline, I think.

Anyway, still achy and tired with a cough, but no nose symptoms. Briefly lost sense of smell but it came back. 11 days since I think I caught it, 8 days of symptoms. Paracetamol, and turmeric tablets help with the headache and joint pain.

Able to function and be at work, just very tired!

Potentialmadcatlady · 19/12/2024 09:45

Week three… two hospital visits ( I’m asthmatic so needed nebbed) steroids, antibio and another hospital checkup booked for two weeks time for them to check my progress. Doubled up on my inhalers.
Splitting headache, aches and pains, night sweats, no voice, totally knackered, chest infection with endless coughing and constantly pissing myself cause the coughing is so strong ( grim!!!)
Hospital said to expect another two weeks or so as I have been so bad 😬🥴
worst bug I have had in years and years

Buttercup198 · 19/12/2024 09:45

I had this with nausea headaches snotty nose cough achy tiredness and actually was sick to worst of symptoms have gone but I still have a cold and cough

EducatingArti · 19/12/2024 10:02

Not sure if it is the same virus but so far I've been ill since Monday. Huge amounts of snot and ear and headaches from blocked sinuses. I'm still streaming with snot, even having taken the cold tablets that have a decongestant in!

Not COVID in my case. I've done 3 in date tests this week ( before each time that I've had to have contact with others) and they've all been negative.

Due to be visiting my elderly and clinically vulnerable mother next week for Christmas. I'm hoping I improve before then!

pavillion1 · 19/12/2024 15:29

Day 10 here , Rough as .. Zero signs of it clearing either 😢

Grumpyoldblonde · 19/12/2024 15:40

Day 11, feeling nausea on top of the stinking cold symptoms.

socks1107 · 19/12/2024 15:41

It's the cough that's now driving me mad. I had one last year and not sure i can face another 7 weeks of coughing again

Thegrassroots26 · 19/12/2024 15:45

Grumpyoldblonde · 19/12/2024 15:40

Day 11, feeling nausea on top of the stinking cold symptoms.

If we’ve the same virus nausea is a very strong element of this. Not nice at all. Hope you get over it soon.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 19/12/2024 17:33

@SereneCapybara @ShiftySquirrel

Me too I was writhing in pain with it.
What helped a little aside from paracetamol, ibrofofen, naproxen was ice packs.

user1471538283 · 20/12/2024 12:18

How are we all? I'm working and I've slept through the night some nights but it's back on my tummy now, I'm still shattered and feel a bit rough. I haven't got any interest in anything and I just want the lounge finished in time for Christmas day. I'm just hoping that's the back of it now as it's been over 2 weeks.

It's spreading like wildfire. One of my friends is really unwell with it.

Thegrassroots26 · 20/12/2024 12:40

I’m slightly better today, but I’m nearly at 6 weeks with it… still feel very fragile. Not ready for the Xmas rat race…

Potentialmadcatlady · 20/12/2024 18:23

I’m still struggling but hopefully no more hospital trips ( I have asthma) as my breathing is finally settling. Still knackered, still sore head, still not sleeping and v little energy which results in meltdowns if I don’t keep a close rein in myself.
Christmas is going to be a tough one unless I improve dramatically over weekend

Doyouthinktheyknow · 21/12/2024 08:56

I’m on day 6 of this and after 3 days of feeling like I was in hell, I feel a tiny bit stronger. I’ve had high temp, vomiting, nausea, bloating, no energy at all. No appetite, headache, it’s been horrendous. I just cried last night, it broke me really, just feeling very sorry for myself.

I’m working Christmas Eve then due to be travelling to family for Christmas Day coming back Boxing Day. Might have to come back Christmas Day unless I make a swift recovery. I’d rather stay here but that’s not an option this year unless I’m really too unwell to travel.

Glitterboobz · 21/12/2024 08:57

So I was on the mend, feeling better, only coughing very infrequently.... But now I have the horrible chesty cough back full force!
I work in childcare.

Has anyone else had this - much better then back to square one? This is really destroying my mental health as I have health anxiety.

user1471538283 · 21/12/2024 09:02

@Glitterboobz - I think several on here have felt better then sick again. I thought I was past it and I'm not as bad as some on here but some days I'm great and others just exhausted. I'm sleeping some nights but not well which doesn't help. Maybe it's several bugs knocking about.

EducatingArti · 21/12/2024 09:57

Day 6 here. The snotfest is easing somewhat (though I had to go out and buy more tissues yesterday) but the cough has set in. I currently think I am keeping lungs reasonably clear using my inhalers so I hope that continues. My neck, throat and ears are still hurting.
I need to be well enough to drive for over 3 hours on Christmas Eve and to not infect my elderly and vulnerable parent!
