Who has this virus? Like a bad cold on steroids

I think this is Day 8 and it's never ending. I usually pick up after day 3 of a head cold but this just seems to be gathering momentum. Sneezing, nose either congested or running like a tap even at 2 am.

I teach and had a rubbish week last week but I think I will have to phone in sick if I'm not feeling better by this time tomorrow.

My DH (who never seems to get ill) is 7 days in now.

He only felt as though he'd turned a corner last night. I think all that's left now is the lethargy, he's just so pale and tired.

Mind you, he managed to cook us all a Sunday roast and eat a bit himself but he now looks like he's about to nod off again.

ladyvimes · 08/12/2024 16:06

Me too. Only on day 4 and feel shit. Am a teacher too and was off on Friday. Going to try and force myself in tomorrow as I have so much to do! Had loads of kids off with it too!

tapdancingmum · 08/12/2024 16:06

I've had it this week. It started last Sunday as a cough, then sneezing and my nose running.

I completely lost my voice Monday afternoon and it has only just got better today. I still feel exhausted and have a bad back which I have put down to coughing so much. I'm hoping it's on the way out now.

Absolutely horrific headaches, sleeping all the time, zero energy, no appetite, coughing. Grim

Justploddingonandon · 08/12/2024 16:11

I had this a few weeks ok, it's Covid if my out of date test can be believed. My chest still isn't quite right and I now seem to have another cold.

OldMrBernardWhoHaveYouSilencedToday · 08/12/2024 16:24

I used to work for 111 during the pandemic taking the COVID-19 calls. I thought as soon as I got this that it was similar to lots of the symptoms people were getting then - sore throat, loss of taste, headache, chesty cough, wheezing, and the big one for me is that I've got a temperature running this whole time. Everyone with Covid had a raging temperature.

It's less intense but this feels like the same beast.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/12/2024 16:25

I had similar and it was Covid

Nothatgingerpirate · 08/12/2024 16:34

Hi, OP.
Husband and I had it for a month and I called it exactly the same as you.
Very fast onset and seems never ending.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 08/12/2024 16:59

I'm in week 4 now and seriously over the whole thing - mentally, not physically! The last two days it's been a really sore throat and aching limbs, but I've worked systematically through every other cold symptom in the book. Every time I think I'm improving, it just changes to a different set of symptoms. And I've tested negative for covid, though I wouldn't have been at all surprised to be positive; this is the most extreme cold-type thing I've ever had.

Condolences to everyone flattened by it.

stilldumdedumming · 08/12/2024 19:16

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I could have said the same thing. I keep trying to carry on. And as you say every time something shifts, something else comes in! I'm back in bed now and just so tired. I have also tested negative for Covid. I am so ready to be better.

I've also been quite tender and tearful. Anyone else.

stilldumdedumming · 08/12/2024 19:17

I have no edit- that was supposed to be a question!

I also had the flu jab in October.

I have had this since 9 November.

Thegrassroots26 · 08/12/2024 19:18

Yes to the emotional thing! Have cried a lot! Felt really down and hopeless. Barely leaving the house in three weeks doesn’t help… along with feeling horrendous every day. Very isolating and shit.

DuchessOfSausage · 08/12/2024 19:19

I've got it.

The more I read and the more I experience, the more all roads lead to Covid !

LostittoBostik · 08/12/2024 19:21

I'm on week 6 of a wheezy cough. Feel ok in myself now but still short of breath some days.

My DH and my DM have both needed course of steroids. It took my mum 8 weeks to get better. She was checked out regularly for pneumonia and other complications as she's older - nope, "just a virus". But it's a horrid one

Username056 · 08/12/2024 19:31

With quite a few people saying COVID earlier on, I used an old test I had. Negative. So if it’s correct, I have some nasty cold or flu. I have had the flu jab this year.

Sorry for everyone else feeling awful at the moment.

Boutonnière · 08/12/2024 19:44

I had a very bad cold solidly for two weeks in early November, which was so unusual. Not flu ( no aches, no fever, no complete loss of appetite) just the constant, constant production of a runny nose ( Rudolph after 3 days) and actually took to my bed ( sleep very minimal ) Thought I was better but then voice kept coming and going, irritating cough that wasn’t deep and chesty and is still not quite gone.

I haven’t had anything quite like it before but have since heard from a few local friends who have/still have it.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 08/12/2024 20:56

I had Covid in late August so I really don’t think this is it again, it feels different. Covid was milder than this really! This is just hanging around forever.

I had tests before because of my job and needed to know to avoid patient contact but I’ve changed jobs now and no longer have access to tests.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 08/12/2024 22:34

Oh I agree with whoever said about being tearful. I keep forcing myself not to burst into tears over stupid things like the washing up and feel just very low in spirit.
No energy isn't helping. I feel like I have aged 40 years in 3 weeks

MsJuniper · 08/12/2024 23:26

Also a teacher and also suffering but can't take time off. I had a virus of some kind a few weeks ago - high temp, sickness and chills with a lingering cough. Eventually shook it off and a week later caught this cold. I'm assuming my defences were low as it has been so dreadful. A week of completely blocked ears and dry cough followed by absolute swimming pools of snot and phlegm. Hearing comes and goes. Cough now productive and I have ended up googling whether it's possible to crack a rib from coughing as it hurts so much.

In the meantime my knee has started clicking weirdly and I have two spots on my face. Whoever said they've aged 40 years in 3 weeks was spot on!

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 08/12/2024 23:44

Isn't it funny how loads of us are teachers or TAs and feel we can't have time off?
We are calling our school the plague pit right now as everyone is ill even the kids.
But the show must go on (though how with my crackly voice and intermittent cough I don't know).

Lovesabadboy · 08/12/2024 23:55

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 08/12/2024 10:24

Oh I forgot this weird symptom. Nothing tastes right. I love my coffee and it s not tasting good just now. I m living on lucozade.
Even bland things like bread taste weird like overly sweet.

In November last year, I had the symptom of everything tasting sickly sweet and I was even 'smelling' sweetness when I was in bed...like a satsuma smell.
I did a test and it was Covid.

I had a 3 week cold in October/early November, and now I have another stinker thanks to my DH who kindly shared his.
The coughing, at night, is shocking! I fall asleep, breathe through my mouth because my nose is blocked, mouth dries up and I wake up coughing until I am almost sick. Have a drink of water to ease the dry mouth. Need a wee. Fall asleep and repeat ad infinitum!
It is exhausting!

I take a little comfort in knowing (hoping) that this will be gone by Christmas!

yohohoCrimbo · 09/12/2024 00:30

This really is rotten. Don't have any tests but it could be Covid. Nose still like a tap and lying down is a nightmare. I feel like I m drowning in my own snot

I’m on day 12 of this, never had such a horrendous cough or so much snot - thought it was getting better 5 days ago but no started to feel worse again, lost my sense of taste and smell on and off too!

woke up wth a headache and sore throat at 4 this morning just all exhausting and makes me feel very low and sensitive - never known anything like it and I’m mid 60s

The excessive snot is a sign of the current Covid strain.I had it some weeks ago and initially thought it was a bad cold - until I tested and got the strongest positive I’ve ever had. I had the insomnia too, tossing and turning.
