Who has this virus? Like a bad cold on steroids

I think this is Day 8 and it's never ending. I usually pick up after day 3 of a head cold but this just seems to be gathering momentum. Sneezing, nose either congested or running like a tap even at 2 am.

I teach and had a rubbish week last week but I think I will have to phone in sick if I'm not feeling better by this time tomorrow.

Mine is still going. Can't take any time off work and I'm really struggling today. I keep taking Lemsip etc but nothing is really working.

It's not COVID (I actually didn't feel this bad the one time I did have COVID!)

smellsfishy · 10/12/2024 09:27

I think this is what I have. Started fairly innocuously - progressed to feeling awful all of last week - guess I'm on about day 12 now. Terrible cough, stuffy nose, lethargy. Sneezing all weekend but that has subsided.

Still have stupid cough / phlegm but now clear not green and is less frequent. Pain in lower side has gone. Don't know if that was lung pain or intercostal muscle pain. Tired as busy and have had disturbed sleep for two weeks. Never had a noticeable fever. I really want the cough to go as I've struggled through two school concerts (one of which I had to leave temporarily) but have the theatre this weekend and don't want to be stifling a cough all through the performance.

I'm starting my fourth week. One side of my throat is killing me the last 3 days, and no pain relief does anything for it - not paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine, throat spray, lozenges. And my ear on that side is intermittently affected, too.

Thankfully most of the other symptoms have cleared, I just have a rattley cough which is nowhere near as bad as it was last week. My nose is mostly dry today and the exhaustion is gone (though it's been replaced with insomnia, which I could do without!).

Actually, my toes have just reminded me that I'm having random stabbing pains in my feet and legs, as well. I'd briefly forgotten that.

We're trying hard to tie up loose ends this week to move house this week, after the bank messed us around in multiple different ways and cost us five weeks, and between that and the throat thing, and the fact that I have my work annual performance review today, I'm feeling quite hard done by and really just want to hide in a duvet and watch Netflix. But the mortgage wars need me.

Sigh.

My symptoms sound very similar to yours in that I don’t feel like I’ve ever had a high fever/temp. Do feel achy though.

i had a mastectomy 6 years ago and lymph nodes removed on one side. I feel like my mastectomy scar is actually hurting with all the coughing and sneezing. Hope you are ok for the theatre this weekend. There’s still time to improve/get better.

Oistinemup · 10/12/2024 11:56

Me. Although mine sounds milder than most of you lot.

im never ill- but have been sofa/bed lounging for four full days now.

coughing up a storm - it really hurts! Stuffed up nose but that didn’t linger too long.

headaches and generally bleary ..

Have a couple of events booked for this weekend so hope I’m fit for those ( also hope DH didn’t catch it from me)

Ugh- feel better soon people

Oistinemup · 10/12/2024 11:58

I had a Covid booster and flu jab in October so perhaps why my symptoms aren’t as bad as they could be ?

smellsfishy · 10/12/2024 12:14

@Username056 thanks! Positive vibes only! Sorry about your scar hurting - the coughing is awful isn't it :( hope you feel better soon too!

iPreferBooks · 10/12/2024 14:15

I think I've got whatever it is too - currently on day 11. Soldiered on most of the week at work (thank you lempsip capsules and strepsils), but woke up this morning feeling so shaky and sick, so ended up phoning work to say i cant come today. Urgh. I know getting flu jab booster doesn't completely prevent flu but I'm still suprised/annoyed I caught this Sad

PaperDreamsHoney · 10/12/2024 14:29

Yep. DS woke up with a scorching temperature on Friday, pretty much slept for 2 days straight and is now coughing, snotty and grumpy. DD dropped on Saturday and me on Sunday. Coughing, snotting, sore throat, joint aches, the lot. Weirdly I've not had a fever at all. I did a Covid test this morning and it was negative but I might test DD too.

Tdcp · 10/12/2024 14:31

I have it. I've been unwell over the weekend with the usual aches and exhaustion but I woke up this morning full of cold. I'm at work today and I'm hoping i can afford the day off tomorrow. I feel awful.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/12/2024 16:23

Yes, I'm on day 2. My manager is already hassling me about going back to work.

Feel rotten.

Terrribletwos · 10/12/2024 16:27

Feeling fine. Could it just be normal flu/cold going around?

ProbableDoris · 10/12/2024 17:36

On the mend, finally, but the cough is lingering and I’m still creating quite a lot of snot. Intercostals are painful from all the coughing. Hoping for a good night’s sleep tonight and better by the weekend. Sympathies to everyone going through it!

bluebalou · 10/12/2024 22:46

I'm on day 11 and just started to feel better today, I'm so happy, it feels like I've been so unwell for ages , apart from working in the week I've spent the last two weekends and every night after work in bed and wiped out.
Hope everyone starts to feel better soon.

MrsSethGecko · 11/12/2024 08:01

Not coughing as much this morning but I've got sore bumps in my mouth which seems very unfair.
Still feel generally rotten.

Iliketulips · 11/12/2024 08:10

DH caught a cold/virus just over three weeks ago. It's only the last couple of days he feels like his normal self. I possibly caught it a week later (although had been keeping away from him) - my cold wasn't too bad but after a week I had a couple of days of feeling really weak.

Hyperion100 · 11/12/2024 08:20

Had it for 3 weeks. Cleared it for a week then got steam rollered by the flu. Only just got out of bed after 4 days not being able to lift my head off the pillow.

socks1107 · 11/12/2024 08:56

I've woken up with a horrible cold this morning. Feeling dreadful and out of nowhere.
Hoping it goes by weekend as it's my daughter's 21st birthday!

TheignT · 11/12/2024 09:03

I've had it for 8 or maybe 9 weeks. Started as bad head cold, went to chest infection to add to the joy. I've still got a very runny nose (never had anything like it before and my nose was so raw from blowing it that it was bleeding at one point) 3 lots of antibiotics have helped with the chest infection but it isn't defeated. I have a 2nd xray coming up in just under 2 weeks as they want to see if my lungs look any different.

I feel exhausted, moody as hell (never argued as much with DH in the last 40 years as I have in the last 8 weeks, he only needs to look at me and I'm snapping his head off.) I can't sleep, been up since 5am as what's the point of staying in bed? I can't be bothered with anything, microwave meals for dinner last night.

I've really had enough and I'm dreading Christmas, nothing is ready and we have family coming so lots of cooking etc.

Sorry that isn't a very positive message but selfishly I feel better for getting it out.

Glitterboobz · 11/12/2024 09:32

I'm on week 4. Started with a cough, the cough got very phlegmy and chesty and I've been through pretty much every other symptom mentioned here - blocked ear, headache, rivers of snot then blocked nose and also lightheaded.

I carried on working for the first few weeks - I work in a nursery which as you can imagine is full of coughing and sneezing children! And I don't get paid when I'm off sick. So I carried on.
But I've taken this week off, I had to just completely rest.

I'm now still sniffly, still coughing but not as much. And my voice is still rough/hoarse but I'm hoping I'm turning a corner.

Hoping you all start to feel better too, this is brutal.

SereneCapybara · 11/12/2024 09:33

I've had it for two weeks. Worst sore throat ever now down to mild but persistent sore throat. Very low energy. General cold symptoms. I know two people who had it and it turned into pneumonia. Same long-lived cold with sore throat - so take it easy if you can.

Oh God I feel for you. I am dreading Christmas too. I keep thinking, 'There are SO many people this year' when there aren't. Just DS2 plus girlfriend and their cat, DS1 and a mate of his, then later, DS1's partner coming for a week. Never more than 6 around the table and yet I am absolutely shattered in advance at the thought.

It's got so bad, DH has started doing housework and that really is a first Grin (To be fair to him, he does most of the shopping, cooking, gardening and taxiing but I do the tidying and cleaning only no one has done that for a fortnight and the house was looking like a student squat.

NetDesMamans1 · 11/12/2024 09:49

Who here has done a Covid test? I'm feeling the same symptoms - spent the vast majority of the weekend in bed, weird boost of energy on Sunday afternoon, then felt sort of okay on Monday. Yesterday (Tuesday) I went to the shop for some bits and it wiped me out. This morning any small exertion or activity and I just want to cry and go back to bed. I tested positive for Covid on Monday.

incrediblehunk · 11/12/2024 14:51

Haven’t tested but know this is covid. Comes in waves, lost sense of taste, exhausted.

Thegrassroots26 · 11/12/2024 14:59

Yeah it had Covid written all over it. I tested negative, but potentially did it late in the progression of the illness. My daughter positive in the same house…
