Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

Pulp, never heard of the whole country picking sides. I think there were bigger issues to be honest.

shotgunshine · 08/11/2024 19:31

Ditto Pulp.

I knew this was going to be one of the responses! Yours is the third option on the poll Grin

Blur! Prefer Oasis now!

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 19:35

It was a major event and I remember listening to the chart that day on my Walkman with Blur winning. I always preferred Blur as they werent up their own arseholes like the insufferable Gallacher brothers.

HRTQueen · 08/11/2024 19:36

From London so Blur 🤩

and at the time they started to be big living in New Cross (well Deptford so just up the road)

shotgunshine · 08/11/2024 19:37

I wouldnt call myself a music snob for preferring Pulp, they were pretty mainstream too!

I mean Blur did some good stuff and I am a fan, but Country House was pants, and the rest of Great Escape album was a low point in their career.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 08/11/2024 19:37

Blur. Still not an Oasis fan. Love lots of other music though.

leftfootinletfootout · 08/11/2024 19:39

Suede

MavisPennies · 08/11/2024 19:40

Northern so Oasis but I did also like blur. DP was a hater of all indie music and much more into hip-hop both then and now.
It has never been an issue in our marriage 😂

Kalettesarethebest · 08/11/2024 19:40

Blur and I'm from Manchester. Blur were/are better musically.

1dayatatime · 08/11/2024 19:41

Both were shite

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/11/2024 19:41

Heavily into Blur at the time but don't listen ever now

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/11/2024 19:42

Oasis if I had to pick, but another vote for Pulp from me. Loved them then, love them still.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/11/2024 19:42

I bought both singles but preferred Blur (apart from the godawful Girls and Boys)

BookishType · 08/11/2024 19:43

We were telling our kids about exactly this, last weekend. I was definitely a Blur fan as I was in love with Damon Albarn and let’s face it, Liam and Noel were not remotely fanciable, even when young. I also loved Oasis, mind.

But Country House was an absolutely shit song imo, so I was hoping Oasis would triumph. Still a travesty.

Scutterbug · 08/11/2024 19:43

Loved Blur! But also loved Pulp. Oasis I thought were twats.

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 19:45

Its a 2 horse race. Country House was a great song with accompanying fun video. Oasis were just moody twunts.

Drivingoverlemons · 08/11/2024 19:45

Blur.

Roryno · 08/11/2024 19:46

I’m from Manchester but I have always hated arrogance so I wanted Blur to win. I did like Oasis’s music at that time though (although I think it went majorly downhill after that album). Blur were good fun. I liked Suede a lot too. Couldn’t understand the Pulp hype.

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 19:47

@Roryno me neither, Jarvis was funny enough but they had hardly any good tunes.

Ionacat · 08/11/2024 19:48

Blur for me for that debate, but I did really like Terrorvision. DH was very firmly Oasis!

leftfootinletfootout · 08/11/2024 19:48

Apparently I saw Blur at uni in about 94 but was too pissed on cider and black to remember

IceSkates · 08/11/2024 19:48

I liked both, but being northern, I was loyal to Oasis!
My older brother was and still is a fan of them, all his mates were too - I remember him having a long khaki parka jacket when he was about 17 😆

I still listen to some Oasis songs, but haven’t listened to Blur for years now that I think about it.
