Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

Definitely team Blur, still am.
Oasis are a bunch of cocks.

pictoosh · 08/11/2024 20:28

Neither at the time but in hindsight Blur.

ThePoshUns · 08/11/2024 20:28

Although at the time preferred Acid Jazz

I read Alex James book years ago and it was fascinating especially as they are all such different characters but can gel well as a foursome. Blur were definitely unique.

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 20:31

Funnily enough despite picking Blur here i never bought any blur albums, and only the 1 Oasis one, Masterplan.

For me, Ocean Colour Scene beat them both. The Britpop era was awesome.

Itsforthebest · 08/11/2024 20:33

I was on the Trip Hop side. I hated Blur in the early years but then they recorded '13' and I fell in love with them. I was more into Noel and Liam's personal lives than their music but I seem to know all their songs and I'm going to see them next year.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 20:34

I really hope that Oasis knock it out the park for the fans next summer ! People are waiting to be cheered up and nostalgia , you can't over rate it tbh !

WitchSharkadder · 08/11/2024 20:46

It was absolutely massive news that summer, I remember it well. Not a huge fan of either band but I still bought into the hype.

Pulp and Suede both superior though. Babies will always be my favourite ever song, closely followed by Trash.

noblegiraffe · 08/11/2024 20:50

Ah, Blur are winning the MN vote!

All the hype about getting Oasis tickets, I wonder if there would be that much appetite for a Blur reunion.

I thought Blur were fun and that Oasis were joyless posers.

Blur are better at smaller venues ( so I'm told by my Blur super fan friends)
I've not seen either in concert, but I wouldn't mind Blur if it wasn't such a faff going to gigs ( and expensive!)

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/11/2024 20:55

I preferred Oasis but out of those songs Blur’s was marginally better. I remember going round asking people 😂. I was 14 though

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 20:59

It was all music industry hype , but it was fun and certainly more cheerful times back then!

SirCharlesRainier · 08/11/2024 21:00

Blur definitely. As a solidly working class northerner I've always despised Oasis and the countless "professional northerners" they inspired, so probably would always have gone for Blur even if it weren't for the fact that they're musically fantastic and endlessly creative whereas Oasis are... shit.

noblegiraffe · 08/11/2024 21:00

You had to actually go out and physically buy the single too, it was an investment. Nowadays they just decide who is best by number of streams on Spotify 🥱

Yep it was a proper chart back then. Its a joke nowadays!

noblegiraffe · 08/11/2024 21:05

I just looked up the Reading line-up for that year. Bloody hell we were spoiled for music back then weren't we?

Blur... then Oasis... then Blur again! However, I was a fan of Blur from about 1991 and then Oasis got big in 94.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 21:06

Sabrina carpenter is 'number one' apparently
I doubt many care too much these days!

It were awesome! I imagine like me you are now fully in Radio 2 territory.

Shed 7 have some new material out and its decent, ditto the Manics. Paul Heaton still going strong. Its like the 90s never went away.

YaB · 08/11/2024 21:08

Oasis by a mile. There isn’t any competition really imo….

user2848502016 · 08/11/2024 21:12

Oasis definitely.
Blur were for "southeners" 😂

MrTwatchester · 08/11/2024 21:13

You say "the 90s", it was actually about a fortnight in 1996.

I liked 'em both.

user2848502016 · 08/11/2024 21:14

But yeah Pulp were definitely better, and have stood the test of time unlike the other two I think!

imnotthatkindofmum · 08/11/2024 21:14

Blur!

But honestly Pulp ruled

BarkLife · 08/11/2024 21:15

Blur, although I was very taken with Definitely Maybe.

My very 'not like you thought' Britpop opinion is that Super Furry Animals were the best Britpop band.
