Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

The media whipped this all up. We don't have to only like one of them. Same for Take That and East17.

autienotnaughty · 08/11/2024 22:36

@Camelphat vindaloo also has Matt Lucas (and David walliams) in

Yeah Blur had some great collabs over the years. Gorrilaz and Sean Ryder.

I was Blur in the 90s but now Oasis mainly because I can't stand miserable Damon Albarn. I know Gallagher brothers are twats most of the time too but at least they're not hypocritical champagne socialists.

SirChenjins · 08/11/2024 23:10

Blur - couldn’t stand the whining and caterwauling from the front man of the 3rd rate Beatles tribute act.

Pulp were the best of the 3 though.

Haha you must be joking. Noel is the biggest champagne socialist going, literally quaffing champagne with Tony Blair at number 10 in 1997. And he's famously Irish not English (so always wants our national football team to lose) despite painting himself as a Manc, who actually lives in London. A bigger wanker I do not know.

palmtreesoliveleaves · 08/11/2024 23:18

Blur without a doubt. I remember watching it being announced on TOTP and I was ecstatic. I don't care if it was all hyped up by the record companies, it was great fun.

The Britpop 90s were brilliant. I listen to 90s music when I'm busy in the kitchen. My 8 year old always asks for Absolute 90s when we're in the car now and says it's his favourite music.

Take me back!

Cosycover · 08/11/2024 23:19

I was too young at the time but Roll With It is milessssss better than Country House.

EmmyPankhurst · 08/11/2024 23:25

Pulp

Solow12 · 08/11/2024 23:28

great thread! Blur all the way. I liked oasis too at the time but Liam Gallagher is a twat and absolutely godawful live.
and how anyone can say Roll with it is superior to Country House when it contains the lyric “he’s reading Balzac, knocking back Prozac” Genius.

Exactomundo! Compare that to the Oasis primary school level lyrics of practically all of their songs.

And I enjoyed the Morning Glory mention in Country House too.

pictoosh · 08/11/2024 23:57

I voted Blur...but Roll with It is a better song than Country House. Fairly easily.
Roll with It is a decent noise track, Country House just chippy and annoying.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 08/11/2024 23:59

I liked them both but preferred Oasis

researchers3 · 09/11/2024 00:23

Blur all the way. Still love them now and the album they released last year is gorgeous.

He was SO beautiful back in the day.

GoFaster83 · 09/11/2024 00:23

I was blur. My sister who I shared a room with was oasis so I was fully immersed in oasis too. Never liked oasis particularly until I saw them at a festival years later and I have to say, they were flipping amazing on stage. But so are blur! Pulp too. And beautiful south.

Womanontop · 09/11/2024 00:37

Blur, and I'm a Manc. Helped by Damon being so beautiful!

I loved Pulp the most though, took the teenage DCs to see them last year and we had the best time!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/11/2024 00:45

Pulp, then Blur

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2024 07:24

I was Blur at the point of the two singles but Oasis had much better anthems and singles for the radio and singing along to. You can't beat Wonderwall.

I voted Oasis because I had two albums and never bought a Blur album.

I like Pulp better.

I always thought Blur were for middle class southerners. They're one of those' too clever by half' bands.

I don't think you 'had' to pick a side- that was media frenzy. I liked them both. Oasis have lasted better.

Preferred Pulp and The Beautiful South.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2024 07:42

One of my year 13s yesterday referred to Blurasis. No. That is not a thing we ever said, dearie.

BarkLife · 08/11/2024 21:52

@levantine I’ve bumped into every member of Radiohead over the years, most of them are fairly miserable (Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke especially).

Ha ha this doesn't surprise me at all!!

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2024 10:20

Jollity would be more surprising!

Sortumn · 09/11/2024 10:31

Blur, their music was much more varied.
And pulp.
My son dragged me to see pulp last year. They put on a great show. The crowd where I was stood was lovely. There's was no drama getting tickets which were reasonably priced.

I'm not sure what oasis are going to pull out of the bag to make their show be worth the money, hassle and build up.

Jasmin71 · 09/11/2024 10:47

They were both crap

Maybe they're getting confused with McBusted.

Perhaps Blurasis is the supergroup we all need?

Everyone picked a side.

Did they fuck. They were both utter dog shite.
