Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

Everyone picked a side.

Did they fuck. They were both utter dog shite.

And your side was 'musical snob, above it all' per the voting options.

You might not like them, but they weren't dog shite.

As loads of PP have said - the answer to Blur or Oasis is always Pulp.

But if I had to choose it would be Oasis, because Don't Look Back in Anger is a brilliant song.

@Roryno me neither, Jarvis was funny enough but they had hardly any good tunes.

Disco 2000 is an amazing tune. So is Common People imo.

I liked both at the time. I think Blur's music has aged better, though - I wouldn't bother listening to Definitely Maybe these days, but I still think Parklife is a good album.

WarriorN · 09/11/2024 12:13

Blur.

And pulp.

Ds 12 now listens constantly to blur <preens-> on the echo dot mumsnet gave us to review

BobbyBiscuits · 09/11/2024 12:23

Those two songs were both absolutely shite! I liked blurs parklife album. I kind of fancied Damon and Alex, and Graham..and found oasis physically displeasing. So I guess I was Blur but by '95 I was more into heavier music like sepultura. I was also in love with Jarvis Cocker and went to their gig early that year!

Tarkan · 09/11/2024 12:28

Between the two I was Oasis at the time as I thought Blur were whiny (although I did have Girls and Boys as a vinyl single). Couldn't give a crap about the Oasis reunion now though and I don't mind listening to a few Blur songs. Still not my first pick though.

I loved Pulp too though. Then I got really into Stereophonics after I saw them live in 98. Got into Travis shortly after that as well and finally got to see them live this year (and met the whole band after the gig as well).

treadcarefullymychild · 09/11/2024 12:28

At the time I was Oasis but now I'd be Blur. I always loved Pulp too. And Suede. Let's face it, Roll With It and Country House were not the finest songs they put out!

My 15yo DS is currently obsessed with Oasis. It's the first group that he's actively sought out more music from rather than just enjoying the stuff he's heard in passing and sticking to those tunes that are familiar/ the "greatest hits". This started just before they announced their reunion so he was gutted that we didn't manage to get tickets. He likes Blur too and we did manage to see them last year.

ohyesido · 09/11/2024 12:34

Didn't everyone prefer Blur? You just knew if you saw Damon Albarn in the street you would probably get a hug and an autograph. Approach either of the Gallagher brothers and you'd likely be told to fuck off at best.

Country House was by far the better track

MyNameIsSharon · 09/11/2024 12:40

I was Oasis and still love the music now. I never could stand the Gallagher's though so I hate that I love their songs!

Alconleigh · 09/11/2024 13:12

I'm just enjoying how many people have come on to say Pulp. Saw them again last year. Still got it.

SlipperyLizard · 09/11/2024 13:17

I loved Blur and Oasis (and pulp!), but those two songs were the absolute worst either of them ever released. Both like a parody of their best work, I didn’t want either to be no 1.

Kalettesarethebest · 08/11/2024 19:40

Blur and I'm from Manchester. Blur were/are better musically.

Same but I was a Jarvis fan all the way. Must have seen pulp 5 times.

Mishapes mistakes misfits...

ZenNudist · 09/11/2024 13:19

Country House was shit. Roll with it was meh.

GiraffeTree · 09/11/2024 13:20

Loved them both. And Pulp too.

pinkroses79 · 09/11/2024 13:31

I liked both of them, and also Pulp. I can't actually remember the incident you are talking about though. I liked Country House a lot, but I had all the albums of all 3 and played them constantly.

Maybe they're getting confused with McBusted.

Perhaps Blurasis is the supergroup we all need?

Can you imagine the punch ups and the snide comments? It would be stuff of legend.

IRL I never knew so many people liked Blur more than Oasis (That Knebworth gig could be heard for miles). Your poll is interesting. Perhaps it's a classic MN skewed poll.

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/11/2024 14:29

Blur. I can't stand Oasis.

I would definitely queue on Ticketmaster for tickets to that!

Yes re poll, if Oasis are the working class northerners and Blur the middle class southerners, it definitely checks out in terms of demographics.
