Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

The Bluetones.

Pulp. Always.

CeeJay81 · 08/11/2024 21:31

Blur did some great songs! Wasnt keen on Oasis, their songs all sounded too samey to me.

Ah, Blur are winning the MN vote!

All the hype about getting Oasis tickets, I wonder if there would be that much appetite for a Blur reunion.

I thought Blur were fun and that Oasis were joyless posers.

Blur played two nights in Wembley last year as well as a tour around UK, Ireland and Europe.
Luckily for massive fans like me it was much easier to get tickets!

Yes to Pulp and Suede as well...those were the days.

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 08/11/2024 21:41

In the 90s I was all for Blur, mostly because I fancied Damon Albarn. Now, I prefer Oasis.

@Ginkypig I thought I was a joyless person till I read this.

I remember that week and that Sunday very well and it was big news. Millions tuned into the Top 40 on that day to learn who won the battle.

I’m absolutely not joyless

I am passionate about music (probably not music you like or some of the blur/oasis crowds like and actually you probably haven’t even heard of some of the bands I like but that’s fine, each to their own and all that) but I couldn't give a shiny shit about either of those bands and almost everyone I was close too weren’t that fussed either, that’s not to say they hated them at all but there was definitely not the hype that people describe now as being universally countrywide. Not everyone was into them and that’s ok! It wasn’t the top musical conversation amongst everyone and that’s fine.

yes it was a big thing but not big for everyone and definitely not big like people talk about now, that everyone had an opinion and everyone fell on one side or the other and no one didn’t care because that’s just not true. there also seems to be judgment towards people who remember things differently like somehow the rest of us just don’t remember it correctly or are acting like we were too good for it for not agreeing rather than for some of us, it wasn’t something we were following because it wasn’t our thing.
like you said millions tuned in but also millions didn’t!

It was a big deal. I much preferred Blur at the time but they've hardly stood the test of time. Radiohead on the other hand...

borntobequiet · 08/11/2024 21:51

Entirely confected, nonsensical dispute.

Beatles vs Stones was the one that mattered in the second half of the last century.

(Disclaimer: I favoured neither of them.)

BarkLife · 08/11/2024 21:52

@levantine I’ve bumped into every member of Radiohead over the years, most of them are fairly miserable (Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke especially).

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 22:00

Yep you can argue it wasn't but it was a big deal. Britpop was literally everywhere and Blur vs Oasis was the biggest rivalry.

There were 4 channels on the telly. Big Breakfast every weekday, TFI Friday on a Friday. The whole culture of the UK was consumed by it. Tony Blair even welcomed Noel to number 10 for a booze up.

Of course other genres were available, notably dance/house/rave/etc but that takes nothing away from mainstream britpop.

😂 I'm not sure that comes off in the way that you intended it to.

Blur in general but Country House was pretty poor. Didn’t like Oasis much at all.

Pulp, Suede, Elastica, Garbage, Skunk Anansie, Placebo, the Prodigy, Supergrass, Radiohead, the Charlatans… so many more…

BitOutOfPractice · 08/11/2024 22:03

Blur. Can’t abide oasis and their poor man’s pub singer of a lead singer.

Another Pulp appreciator, along with Garbage, Placebo, Shed Seven, Cast, NIN, and all manner of other dopamine inducing choon-wranglers.

Massively disliked Oasis, didn’t mind Blur. Oddly for my friendship group, I didn’t like Radiohead much either.

Pixiedust49 · 08/11/2024 22:21

Pulp. And Garbage.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 08/11/2024 22:23

Neither cos both were shite!

HeadacheEarthquake · 08/11/2024 22:24

Blur blur blur all the way

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/11/2024 22:27

Neither.
The real discussion should be Duran Duran v. Spandau Ballet.

Ypsilanti · 08/11/2024 22:28

Blur superfan here.

Country House makes me curl my toes up in horror now though.

autienotnaughty · 08/11/2024 22:29

autienotnaughty · 08/11/2024 22:30

username7891 · 08/11/2024 22:33

Neither, it was an absolute wank fest conjured up by record companies to make cash.

Great video also starred Matt Lucas and Jo Guest.

And Keith Allen was in Fat Les of Vindaloo fame.

autienotnaughty · 08/11/2024 22:34

@Camelphat yes with Alex James from blur!
