Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?

Forget Brexit, I was just trying to explain to my DS how in the 90s, the country was entirely obsessed with, and completely split over whether Blur with Country House, or Oasis with Roll With It would get to Number 1 in the charts. Everyone picked a side.

I said that I was Blur and asked my DH which side he was on. He said 'Blur, of course, and I'm not sure a marriage could work if you were on opposing sides'.

Anyone happy with a partner who was on the opposing side? I would have guessed that DH was Oasis so I'm very happy to hear that he was on the correct (winning) team.

@Roryno me neither, Jarvis was funny enough but they had hardly any good tunes.

Eh?!!

Pulp had all the good tunes, with all the good lyrics.

Blur’s only good song was Coffee & TV.

sommerjade · 08/11/2024 19:50

I liked both but I really was into the Prodigy & drum n bass more. I saw Blur live twice as they played gigs in my town. I also saw Suede.

SellFridges · 08/11/2024 19:53

I adore both. I bought Roll With It and Country House so I was no bloody use! I’ve seen both lots, in the 90’s and more recently (well, next year for Oasis).

Oasis

AreYouShittingMe · 08/11/2024 19:55

Another Pulp fan here- much preferred their music. It has stood the test of time. My son (17) went to see Pulp, Blur, and Liam Gallagher last year and enjoyed seeing Pulp live the most. Jarvis is a fantastic frontman.
I did like the whole Oasis v Blur hype though, vey entertaining with not having any real skin in the game.

Moonlightstars · 08/11/2024 19:58

Didn't like Blur too home counties
Tolerated Oasis though hate the nasal whine (live round the corner from their family home)
Love/d Pulp far far better.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/11/2024 19:42

I bought both singles but preferred Blur (apart from the godawful Girls and Boys)

That's the one Blur song I like Confused. Definitely preferred Oasis.

Avalovelace · 08/11/2024 19:59

At the time, Blur. Although I was very much a Suede fan (and still am). Naughty considering DA went off with Justine. Now, much more Oasis. And that pic of LG in the red Berghaus jacket. fans self

AmusedMaker · 08/11/2024 19:59

Oasis ( and I’m from London )
but very working class so maybe that explains it.
Never really liked Blur or Pulp.
loved Suede.

maras2 · 08/11/2024 19:59

I thought I was being a hip mum asking my kids which album they wanted for Christmas, Blur or Oasis. Was blindsided when one said 'would it be possible to have neither but may I have Skunk Anansie and boy Maras would like Tighten Up compilation'. This was way before Wiki, so had to do a tour of our city's record shops. Grin Flippin kids.

Pulp, never heard of the whole country picking sides. I think there were bigger issues to be honest.

Edited

There may have been bigger, longer term global issues, but in the summer of 1995, Blur (Country House) v Oasis (Roll With It) was massive! It was even the lead story on Radio 4 PM programme one day.

Good summer that. Not just for the music.

I've always preferred Oasis. I did feel very old DS told me they studied Britpop in GCSE music history!

Avalovelace · 08/11/2024 20:01

I mean….

Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?
Elasticatedtrousers · 08/11/2024 20:02

Pulp!

Ginkypig · 08/11/2024 20:02

Neither! I didn’t get what the big deal was about either of them then or now!

I really didn’t understand why people cared enough to pick a side when they were perfectly entitled to like both or some songs from each.

to be honest though there wasn’t as big a debate and argument as people make out there was now, there was pockets of it amongst certain groups of people but the rest of us (mostly everyone else) were just looking in on it thinking wtf why do you care so much.

its become myth that there was and the media tried to make a war but most people while they may have had an opinion or a preference they weren’t actually interested enough to actually argue with with each other about it!

Ihopeithinkiknow · 08/11/2024 20:02

Oasis for me without a doubt but I do like blur and 15 year old me bought both singles haha Country House deserved that win so I will let you have that so you're welcome lol but it's still Oasis for me all day long

Newterm · 08/11/2024 20:05

blur. I found Oasis annoying

WhippetsRule · 08/11/2024 20:06

Blur all the way!!

Camelphat · 08/11/2024 20:06

@Ginkypig I thought I was a joyless person till I read this.

I remember that week and that Sunday very well and it was big news. Millions tuned into the Top 40 on that day to learn who won the battle.

ladygindiva · 08/11/2024 20:07

Blur. All oasis songs sound the same.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 20:09

I liked both , but I always had a crush on Damon , so Blur has the edge for me!
Country house is a banger

HashBrownandBeans · 08/11/2024 20:09

I loved both, still do. I loved all britpop music.

I always preferred each bands lesser known tracks; For Tomorrow and End of a Century and This is a Low from Blur. Talk Tonight, The Masterplan and She’s Electric from Oasis

RebeccaDecember · 08/11/2024 20:09

Lisa knows

Blur versus Oasis, what side were you?
the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 20:11

What's the story is a classic album
I liked the ' banker pose ' Blur did for ' the great escape ' ( I think it was that one anyway!)
They looked slick

hexsnidgett · 08/11/2024 20:21

Always Blur for me and dh Oasis.

Tbh Country House is not my favourite, but I have been loyal since She's So High.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2024 20:25

Blur were more philosophical with the lyrics and a lot about the class system.
Oasis are more anthems and 'singalong 'music.
Both have their place and actually very talented musicians and writers. (Then again , I like a lot of different music and artists, so easily pleased. )
