Told DH he smells

DH has a physical job and self care isn't high on his list generally.

He likes long hot baths, but doesn't rinse after and quite frankly tonight he stank afterwards. I said something like 'you need to try and rinse after the bath, I think because it was so hot you've got sweaty so there's quite a strong smell'.

He's obviously pissed off and was very defensive. Not sure I can soften this can I?

You could say

"Well I never have to worry about you straying. No woman could stand the smell"

He needs a shower, not a soak in a bath.

Some people dont like or have a shower.

You can get shower attachments for taps. And if you don't like them, you need to wash properly in the bath, not just stew in your own soup.

My son can be like this, have a shower but still stinks. He's 13 and puberty is cruel! Things have been better since he started using bar soap on his pits and bits. Shower gel just doesn't cut it. I've told him he can use gel in his body but he must use the bar soap on his smelly pits.

I have bought some really nice smelling triple milled bars from TK Maxx that are big and last for ages. Don't buy things like Dove soap as that doesn't do it either.

Imperial leather original bar soap is fab. It doesnt dry skin out but still has ingredients that kill bacteria its a best seller for a reason.

I remember my childhood we had a corner bath that had one of those shower mixers that looked like a old fashioned telephone attached to the bath taps with a hose.

We didnt have a electric shower installed until i was 16.

If i wanted a quick wash i sat in the bath and used the telephone tap lol.

Yep, been there!

If the OP's partner is just sitting in the bath and not washing his feet grion or armpits i have to ask is he all there?

The OP can buy him a bath sponge my partner doesnt like those buff puff thingies as he thinks there scratchy. I buy bath sponges. Even our local morrisons which is dearer than sainsburys sells bath sponges for 50 pence.

I buy ours from home bargains for 40 pence.

A grown man who doesnt physically wash just sits there how stupid.

murasaki · 09/11/2024 00:28

Totally agree, the presence of water doesn't make things clean. Otherwise I wouldn't have had to scrub a frying pan earlier, I'd just have left the tap running!

tooface · 09/11/2024 00:42

I have watched old films where people bathed in lakes or ponds such as robin hood etc.

Even they didnt just sit there they moved their hands under their pits groin etc.

Could it be that he isn't adequately drying off after his bath ? In our house we have a simple colour code which keeps every inch of us dry: White for hands, brown for feet, green for torso, thighs and seat. And in the cupboard beneath the stair you'll find the red for pubic hair.

You cannot be serious?!?! Come on now…… This is batshit OCD

I don't rinse after a bath - and I don't know anyone who does. Sweat itself doesn't usually smell when it's fresh, so getting sweaty in a hot bath wouldn't make him smell. He just needs to wash properly with soap when he's in the bath. If he is really smelly a single soaping may not do the job, so he may need to wash with soap and then rinse before he gets into the bath, as well as when he's in the bath. And make sure he uses anti perspirant as well.

Some foods make sweat smell worse, onions, garlic, curry, chilli etc., so maybe keep an eye on whether there is a correlation between what he eats and particularly smelly days.

Augustus40 · 09/11/2024 09:19

A bath is just literally sitting in your own dirt.

Sitting in the bath for an hour will wash away sweat which is water soluble, in fact it mostly is water! You do not need to rinse off afterwards.Never heard of that!

No, if you are sweaty with endocrine sweat (arm pits and groin) then it's fat based. Normal body sweat will wash away but this isn't the sweat that causes BO. It's the fat particles in the sweat reacting with oxygen that smell.

Soak in a hot bath but wash well with a flannel or exfoliating sponge and soap.

If I use body wash it's generally not as affective so I have to was twice using a light exfoliating sponge.

It takes seconds but laying in a bubble bath just won't get the fat deposits off the skin.

Relaxedandchilled · 09/11/2024 11:11

For sweat to smell bad it is stale, not fresh. As such he’s going in smelly and coming out smelly and doesn’t actually wash himself.

im also finding more and more people don’t know how to wash themselves, their feet, bum, pits and genitals. Body wash is fine for most, but if you’ve particularly heavy stale sweat then you need soap. And you need to scrub, with a shower puff or similar. You can’t just sit there.

this isn’t he needs to rinse himself off. This is he doesn’t wash.

Well the fact that it is written in rhyming verse does make one wonder!

According to a lot of people on other posts you don't even need to wash your bum/crotch with soap and think water is enough. As if any shower gel/soap is going to give you an instant infection. No wonder people are smelly.

He needs soap. A bar of, rather than shower gel. And a flannel for a good scrub.

This. A bar of soap is much better for this kind of thing than bath/shower gel.

He sat in really hot water for over an hour so he got sweaty

I do this all the time. I don't stink when I get out because while I'm in there I wash head to toe with shower gel or soap. My hair I wash separately as needed, usually every 2 days. It's not the baths, its lack of washing. I'm glad you told the filthy scuzzer and I hope he takes it on board even if he was initially defensive.
