Told DH he smells

DH has a physical job and self care isn't high on his list generally.

He likes long hot baths, but doesn't rinse after and quite frankly tonight he stank afterwards. I said something like 'you need to try and rinse after the bath, I think because it was so hot you've got sweaty so there's quite a strong smell'.

He's obviously pissed off and was very defensive. Not sure I can soften this can I?

He tops up the water with hot and we have a cast iron bath which seems to hold the heat pretty well.
He said he used body wash but I'm not sure.
He smells of awful BO. I find it so unattractive and really wish he'd up the hygiene.

He needs to use bar soap not shower wash.

Easy, if you've been sweating all day, lying in water won't get you clean, you need soap & to be actively washing, preferably with a short off after.

especially if the person has any skin folds.

Obviously? Who just sits in a bath and steps out without actually cleaning themselves….

PermanentTemporary · 07/11/2024 22:33

I love a bath but imo he should go Japanese and have a proper shower with serious wash first so that he's clean in the water.

There does sometimes have to be straight talking about personal hygiene, if people are expecting physical intimacy.

SaySomethingMan · 07/11/2024 22:33

If you can’t tell him, who can?

I’d be put off completely. I was quite disgusted just reading so can only imagine how you feel.

Alalalala · 07/11/2024 22:35

Proper bars of soap and exfoliation gloves/cloth. And rinsing.

Bloody hell. A grown man doesn’t know or care how to clean his own body.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 07/11/2024 22:35

My dad had a very physical job and could stink to high heaven. He used coal tar soap. It really did the trick. Could you suggest he tries some?

I know another man who thinks just sitting in a slightly bubbly bath gets you clean. I've never run him another one again.

lol at crack, gooch and nutsack

Triple combos like that make me think of law firms. “Crack, Gooch & Nutsack LLP”

stop ittttt

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 07/11/2024 22:40

I get horrific BO if I only use shower gel.....He needs bar soap. Preferably dettol which is antibacterial or cold tar soap. He probably is washing his pits but the shower gel just isn't cutting it.

Check what deodorant he's using too......I work a very physical job as well and again I stink if I don't use Mitcham roll on.

OneBlackHeart · 07/11/2024 22:41

I think it's alarmingly common that people don't know how to wash. Australia just put out a public heath campaign telling men how to wash! I have a teen family member who stinks even after a shower and I'm certain they don't actually scrub in there just pour body wash over themselves then rinse it off.

MabelMora · 07/11/2024 22:42

Dare I ask...what is a gooch?

Bogginsthe3rd · 07/11/2024 22:44

Where does his pong originate ? Pit, Anus or Scrotum? If you can isolate the source perhaps you can be more specific about where he needs to scrub with soap ?

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 07/11/2024 22:44

Although that pp’s post was colourful I’m surprised it has gone! What guidelines did it break?

Worried now that I missed something dreadful when I quoted it

okydokethen · 07/11/2024 22:44

His clothes are clean because I wash them but he does have to obviously change daily as they are very dirty when he gets home.

It can't be sweat from the bath, it has to meet air for the bacteria to start to smell and that also takes a few hours at least/

Much more likely he's not actually washing his skin effectively with soap and a flannel - if he's an oily person the bacteria and dead skin cells will just stay attached to his skin without some detergent and friction.

If he smells bad he needs telling. Why does he expect anyone to want to be in his vicinity if he stinks?

Pusheen467 · 07/11/2024 22:46

YANBU. My DH sometimes used to smell after a bath too so I started reminding him to scrub his armpits 😂 I like a nice bath to relax but showers are much better for getting clean imo.

Also known as the bifta! Or bifter! Don't actually know how it's spelt, but that's what I've always known it as!!! 🤣🤣🤣

mm81736 · 07/11/2024 22:48

Sitting in the bath for an hour will wash away sweat which is water soluble, in fact it mostly is water! You do not need to rinse off afterwards.Never heard of that!
