I'll start: Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics. Hilariously funny and I've learned so much, she's brilliant.

Anyone been so impressed with a podcast they'd like to recommend it?

Serial

This is Love, and Criminal - both with Phoebe Judge.

Both more anthropological rather than sensational. This is Love isn’t necessarily about romantic love, it can be love of a place, thing, animal, hobby, etc, and Criminal isn’t anything like the True Crime genre generally; it can be anything from Victorian scams, stolen celebrity poodles in the 30s…I just love both of them!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/10/2024 04:36

I've been listening to Toddlers Made Easy, Freakonomics and MeSsy lately.
(How's that for a combo?)

Toni and Ryan, an Australian one so plenty of innuendo and swearing! They recently did a meet up in London as they are quite popular over here.
Diary of a CEO is very good, very wide range of topics though so I don't listen to them all.

DoTheDinosaurStomp · 28/10/2024 06:37

Where do you access these podcasts? Spotify?

He is such a creep though isn't he?

Yes ... slightly weird! But the interviewees are interesting.

Thanks for this thread!
I already listen to some of the recommendations but it's great to be able to add to my list.

2 smug cunts trying to out smug each other. Lovely.

Harsh! And seems at odds with the tone of this thread.

I absolutely love The Rest is Entertainment and don't get the vibe at all!

i have really enjoyed Brett Goldstein’s film one - Films to be Buried with.

Also quite like Help Hole - two comedians reading self help books so you don’t have to.

A thorough Examination from the Van Tulleken brothers was wonderful. Particularly the bits where they argue.

Used to love the Adam Buxton podcast but sadly he’s gone downhill after he started taking sides on the Glinner thing.

Who knew there was a Sweet Valley High podcast?! Just downloaded the first one to see if it takes me right back to my favourite reading material of the 80s!

BadForBusiness · 28/10/2024 07:48

Most of my favourites have been mentioned (TRIH, TRIE, Natalie Haynes, Cautionary Tales, Infinite Monkey Cage).

My other favourites, not including news and politics, and niche geek stuff, are More Or Less (maths and stats), The Taskmaster Podcast and The Lovecraft Investigations (HP Lovecraft stories adapted in a "true crime podcast" style)

LoafofSellotape · 28/10/2024 07:52

The Teacher's Pet

The Lady Vanishes ( although it needs a good edit)

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 28/10/2024 07:57

Also Curious Cases, also with Hannah Fry, and Cats Got Your Tongue?.

  • Criminal with Phoebe Judge - crime but a bit lighter, beautifully produced, and I find Phoebe a joy to listen to.
  • Ologies with Alie Ward - every episode is an interview with a different 'ologist'. I've learned so much about so much listening to this!
  • In The Dark with Madeleine Baran - all three series I think show the best of investigative journalism. Amazing.
  • The Retrievals - About women's experiences at a fertility clinic. I found this so beautiful and such an incredible look at how women experience pain and trauma when accessing fertility services.

Also love The Rest is Politics and the News Agents for politics, This American Life, This is Actually Happening, and Normal Gossip.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 28/10/2024 08:27

A wish for Afghanistan, by Lyse Ducet

The retrievals

HernameisRio80s · 28/10/2024 08:30

Off the Beat and Track - a great range of musicians and actors talk about the records that mean the most to them. Love Stu Whiffen's genuine enthusiasm and interest in all-things music.

Transmission - two fantastic series looking at the Joy Division and New Order stories.

Rockonteurs - Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt interview and chat to music legends.

And a non-music one: Legacy - in depth looks at historical figures.

AgnesNaismith · 28/10/2024 08:51

Off Air with Fi & Jane is my #1, hilarious and down to earth chit chat about everything and anything - plus for those of us with misophonia, there are no loud mouth noises!

Parenting Hell
Wolf & Owl
The News Agents
What did you do yesterday? - a new one where a guest (so far mostly good comedians) can only talk about exactly what they did the day before,

KimberleyClark · 28/10/2024 09:00

Unexplained

After Dark - a scholarly look at and entertaining chat about darker aspects of human history and alleged supernatural events.

Strange and Unexplained with Daisy Eagan

JFK The Enduring Secret - brilliant for JFK conspiracy buffs.
