I'll start: Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics. Hilariously funny and I've learned so much, she's brilliant.

Anyone been so impressed with a podcast they'd like to recommend it?

British Scandal is brilliant

The Price of Paradise (also Alice Levine) was really gripping

After Dark: Myths, Misdeeds and the paranormal

Tortoise media have an app and you can listen to their investigations for free by subscribing. Hoaxed was especially good.

The World of Secrets series is really good too. Their Abercrombie Guys and Al Faye's investigations were binge worthy

Assume Nothing series also very good

Life Changing on BBC Sounds is fascinating

There's a journalist called Sue Mitchell who has made several brilliant podcasts: Million Dollar Lover, Smugglers Trail and Girl Taken.

Helena Bonham Carter did a great one called History's Secret Heroes which is now on season 2 I think.

  • Criminal with Phoebe Judge - crime but a bit lighter, beautifully produced, and I find Phoebe a joy to listen to.
  • Ologies with Alie Ward - every episode is an interview with a different 'ologist'. I've learned so much about so much listening to this!
  • In The Dark with Madeleine Baran - all three series I think show the best of investigative journalism. Amazing.
  • The Retrievals - About women's experiences at a fertility clinic. I found this so beautiful and such an incredible look at how women experience pain and trauma when accessing fertility services.

Also love The Rest is Politics and the News Agents for politics, This American Life, This is Actually Happening, and Normal Gossip.

Did The Retrievals concentrate on women who’d had successful fertility treatment or were those who hadn’t included as well?

Dippidydoppidydoo · 28/10/2024 09:07

@KimberleyClark from memory, I think there were a range of outcomes included but the podcast is less about the women's fertility journey than it is about their experiences at one particular clinic if that makes sense.

Bichette · 28/10/2024 09:20

For humour I liked My Dad wrote a porno and Who shat on the floor at my wedding.
For true crime - Bear Brook and Paradise
Informative - The rest is history, Betwixt the Sheets
Spooky - Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist

KimberleyClark · 28/10/2024 09:23

Oooh - another one I love is The Witch Farm. I’ve listened to it several times and will probably listen again at some point. And The Lovecraft Investigations.

I really like the 'Frank Skinner off the radio'
Podcast. He used to be on Absolute radio but got the sack so now he and the same two who joined him on the radio do a podcast independently. They really make me laugh and I listen to it when cleaning my house lol

IjustbelieveinMe · 28/10/2024 09:42

And health wise I like:
Disordered- Anxiety help
Feel better live more
The anxious truth
Liz Earle well being show
The Mel Robbins podcast
Walking the dog with Emily Dean
Well enough alone - a guide for thriving solo

CurlewKate · 28/10/2024 11:01

The Rest is Politics/Entertainment and History are my top 3. Americast, Newscast and Parenting Hell (usually) are next.

Lentilweaver · 28/10/2024 11:04

Are there any uplifting/cheery ones that are not too American or woo woo or trite? I don't really like the Gretchen Rubin one. Too influencer.

CurlewKate · 28/10/2024 11:04

@IjustbelieveinMe Is that a new Frank Skinner podcast? I do hope so-I thought it was just repeats......

Three bean salad. Waffly nonsense but so very funny and entertaining. It's my favourite.

My other top ones are: Help I sexted my boss and Off Menu.

I love radio show podcasts, just a round up of all the talky bits without music; Johnny Vaughn Radio X, Jason Manford Absolute Radio, Ed Gamble & Matthew Crosby Radio X are my go to every week.

I listen to podcasts all week at work, they keep me company whilst I wfh. Like earwigging conversation in the office.

Very glad someone else recommended Three Bean Salad. It's so wonderful and comforting.

Not Without My Sister - hilarious, two Irish sisters chatting.

User122456 · 28/10/2024 11:21

Parenting Hell

The Rest is Entertainment

ghostbusters · 28/10/2024 11:21

Where there's a will there's a wake. Kathy Burke hosts and it's brilliantly funny. Quite sweary but very Kathy Burke.

Comfort Eating with Grace Dent.

The Trial (it's done by Daily Mail journalists but give it a chance). Became obsessed with it during Lucy Letby and there have been other interesting court cases featured since.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/10/2024 22:05

I love The Rest is History.

i'm kind of going off them. But i will say that a couple of the "series" they have done are brilliant. The ones on the 70s, the two (so far) on the French Revolution are stand outs.

I'm listening to In Our Time from back when it started, and while i skip some, i do listen to about 60%.

InternationalVelveteen · 28/10/2024 11:25

I used to love Reply All. Too bad it ended, especially in the way it did. One of the best episodes is The Case of the Missing Hit.

Recently I enjoyed Ghost Story.

Other favourites:

Snap Judgment
The Memory Palace
The Moth

Where do you access these podcasts? Spotify?

Check your app library. It's an existing spp in Apple if you have iPhone. It's purple. Looks like a lower case letter i in two circles. ☺️

‘The Mysterious Case of the Gentleman of Heligoland’, which I consider to be the gold standard of true crime. Sublime research by the host.

‘British Scandal’ can be very amusing.

@Pollyanna87 If you enjoy The mysterious case of the gentleman of heligoland and you’ve not already listened to The mysterious case of Fred the head give it a go it’s by the same person

CaveMum · 28/10/2024 12:44

Hello, my name is CaveMum and I have a podcast addiction 😁

I constantly have them on the go so may miss something off my rather long list.

In no particular order:

The Rest is Politics
The Rest Is Politics US
The Rest is Politics Leading
The Rest is Money
The Rest is Entertainment
The Rest is History
Dan Snow’s History Hit
Not Just the Tudors
American History Hit
Diary of a CEO
Political Currency
Parenting Hell
Off Menu
Kermode & Mayos Take
Begin Again with Davina
A Muslim and a Jew Go There
Grief Cast
Shrink the Box
Real Crime Profile
Crime Analyst
You’re Dead To Me
Evil Genius
The Infinite Monkey Cage
The Coming Storm
Newscast
Now You’re Asking
The Lazarus Heist

And then a batch of TV related ones:

The West Wing Weekly (actually finished a few years ago but I like to relisten as I rewatch the show)
Buffering The Vampire Slayer
Boys Watching Buffy
The Rewatcher
Slayin’ It
Fake Doctors Real Friends (Scrubs)
Taskmaster: The Podcast

I listen when I go for a walk/run, when I’m driving alone or if I’m working from home in an empty house. If I’m the only one in the office (small team so this happens at least once a week) I’ll pop one on too while I’m working.

I really enjoyed their series on the assassination of JFK too.
