Willowkins · 26/10/2024 21:21

Can I just say about this immigrant in the bedroom story, I think the actual story, as reported in my native Kent, a couple of years ago, is as follows:
A man walked into a woman's house in Dover. She was in her kitchen as it was during the day. He asked if she could drive him somewhere. She said no. She phoned the police. He went upstairs to her bedroom to check the road and then left. He was later arrested. Someone told her he was an immigrant.
I don't like careless exaggeration or embroidery of facts.

I'm at a gig. A Tom Robinson Band gig. He started off talking about the context for the band/his songs in the 1970s. Didn't have to say much more to make the parallels with now obvious 🥲

Shame, I thought they didn't work weekends.

A reminder that the clocks go back in the UK tonight. Enjoy your extra hour in bed, unless you live with a cat in which case breakfast will be expected an hour earlier and refusal to comply will result in loud miaowing.

I want to tell Larry that dogs are similar but I don't think that would go down well.

Llttledrummergirl · 27/10/2024 00:42

Dd and friends are out tonight, it dawned on them this morning that they have an extra hour for dancing.

Took me right back to being young again.

TheABC · 27/10/2024 01:12

That story about immigrants got my hopes up for a second. Checked under my bed repeatedly, but nowt. DH is out of action and I needed someone tall enough to reach the snacks in the cupboards and help me with the plumbing.

Bloody Daily Mail lying to me! It's worse than the tooth fairy fiasco.

TheABC · 27/10/2024 01:15

On a less sarcastic note, what's going on with all the pre-Budget media frothing? Nobody aside from the Treasury knows what's in it, so are they stabbing around with educated guesses?

Willowkins · 27/10/2024 01:38

In another life, I put in the odd contribution to the Autumn Statement and Budget. There were multiple layers of checks and decisions from Departmental Finance, top civil servants, Ministers and the Treasury. Did the numbers add up, how were we going to pay for it, what would it achieve? It takes weeks to get those final proposals and decisions agreed followed by days to write the thing and do the press release. They'll have a good idea at this stage but there's still time for some last minute tweaking. I think it's going to be really interesting.

What parallels?

That's interesting @Willowkins - shows why all this wild speculation is pointless.

@TheABC I have a theory that the Tories had more mates in MSM and more little scraps of info were thrown their way previously. Without those there would be more imagining and room for more froth.

This government is leaking and briefing like there’s no tomorrow.

And commiserations to @PandoraSox

DS2 is the same. No idea what time it was when lights went on and doors started banging, ths morning. I leave that to DH to deal with since he's a lark, himself.

ChatGPT suggests it's a concerted effort to blunt any positives from the budget in the recorded reportage - basically salt the land that history grows in. A tactic used in asymmetric warfare to diminish the opposition or enemy.

I just can't for the life of me think of countries that are exponents of asymmetric warfare 🤔

I'm surprised that no one of note has suggested a sweepstakes on how long it will be before "AI" has to be approved for use. After all, we don't want the great unwashed getting useful information from it do we ?

Remember: If it can't lie, it ain't AI.

SerendipityJane · 27/10/2024 09:45

Still can't really extract EU stories from UK politics stories - in fact it may never be possible (which says something significant).

When I lived in Kenya, there were 2 prices in a few places (like the reserves), One for locals which was quite a bit less than the price for tourists. So this is nothing new.

I do wonder how UK businesses charging foreigners more would go down ?

SerendipityJane · 27/10/2024 10:02

I wonder if this might be of use to posters here ?

It's always news when non "news" becomes news. Maybe someone (or somebot) has tweaked the tiller of inspection to push an agenda.

Much like the "news" (that wasn't news in 2020, 2016, 20013, 2008, 2004, 2000 ....) that volunteers from UK political parties are aiding US political party.

As ChatGPT noted, the only thing in that story that is new, is that Nigel Farage is being paid for it.
