Grin

I hope your recovery is going well SerendipityJane

Thanks - and thanks to all who supported 🙏. If the worst now is a regime of 12 eye drops a day, I'll have been lucky. (Obviously the NHS is amazing, but as someone who was sending emails in 1984, I can't be uncritical).

On with the thread !

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2024 10:28

On the LK show

Andy Haldane(former CE of the BoE): "The rest of the world will catch a cold if Trump wins... so if you ask me is Donald Trump a bigger threat to UK mortgage rates than Rachel Reeves... of course he is... "

Part of the problem is that anything on the LK show has a 80% chance of being utter shite.

As low as that?

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2024 10:34

This definitely meets that treshold

"People who are not wealthy but might maybe get their income from a couple of rental flats that they might have scrimped and saved to buy."

DS2 is the same. No idea what time it was when lights went on and doors started banging, ths morning. I leave that to DH to deal with since he's a lark, himself.

My cats are still asleep. They get up when I do. 😁

Still no sympathy. Their tenants probably have to scrimp and save to pay the rent to service their landlord 's mortgage.

Edited

They could also have their rent paid by housing benefit so it’s a double whammy for the taxpayer.

They spell her name right, to be fair.

There is nothing really new wirh discounts for EU nationals, we had that in Pompeii when we visited in 2018

When I lived in a Spanish tourist area back in late 90's / early 00's you always had tourist prices and resident prices.

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2024 11:50

A bit like tourist tax, we always had in the Netherlands and not just for foreigners, so I never understood that people were surprised by it.

Thanks for new thread. Saw this and thought this tweet nails it

Screenshot for anyone not on twitter. It's spot on.

I suspect the difference is that those rich people worked so much harder for their money.

You really have no idea of English exceptionalism.

What parallels?

Energy crisis, two miners' strikes, a financial crisis, growing unemployment. Then increasing support for the National Front and horrible, very overt racism/anti-immigration.

This bit from Wiki about Eric Clapton:

Eric Clapton made a declaration of support for former Conservative minister Enoch Powell (known for his anti-immigration Rivers of Blood speech) at a concert in Birmingham.[3] Clapton told the crowd that England had "become overcrowded" and that they should vote for Powell to stop Britain from becoming "a black colony". He also told the audience that Britain should "get the foreigners out, get the wogs out, get the coons out", and then he repeatedly shouted the National Front slogan "Keep Britain White".

It did, at least, lead to the formation of Rock Against Racism

Zonder · 27/10/2024 13:52

I was quite a Clapton fan in my younger days but I discovered his politics and went right off him.

BIWI · 27/10/2024 13:53

Me too.

SerendipityJane · 27/10/2024 13:54

This bit from Wiki about Eric Clapton:

A man whose entire living has been made ripping off black music and musicians from America.

BIossomtoes · 27/10/2024 13:56

I had no idea about Clapton. That’s absolutely abhorrent.

Nor did I. That's disgusting.

I feel your pain. A short period of 10 drops a day for shingles was wearing enough…
Better than the alternative though, as you say.

Notonthestairs · 27/10/2024 14:19

I checked his wiki entry and it seems he made similar comments over a number of years.

He has mellowed a lot and apologised for his racist rant. Except now he is an antivax campaigner. Ah well

Oh right, I thought you meant in relation to gay rights. That’s why I couldn’t see the parallel.

Rock Against Racism! Lordy, that’s a blast from the past. And the Anti-Nazi League.

Might be better to not get caught on video punching somebody in the street even if they did threaten you first.
