The Labour Party are bloody hypocrites

I think Angela rayner has got a nerve to start slashing the right to buy when she has profited from it, is she going to give the money back then that she pocketed from this scheme when she sold her house? I have always been a labour supporter and I am as working class as they come but I am so angry about this. I am not denying that the right to buy policy has its issues but it's just tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis and ignoring the real issues. I may be slightly emotional about this as I live in a one bedroomed council flat that I was planning on buying next year, my only hope of probably ever owning a property. Instead, if and when I choose to have children and I am overcrowded, they will now have to rehouse me themselves instead to a bigger property and I will now probably be a lifelong council tenant. Fabulous. Why are they targeting the people at the bottom? I can't support them anymore sadly.

The word you are looking for is "cunts".

Applies to every politician. Everywhere in the cosmos.

SoupDragon · 26/10/2024 18:17

TBH "right to buy" is a dumb scheme if they aren't replacing the properties.

Pretty much every single politician is a hypocrite though. It's how they become successful ones.

Hopelesslydevoted2Gu · 26/10/2024 18:20

I think Right to Buy is a good thing for the individuals who buy the houses, but bad for the country overall as it depletes council stock. As the recipients are buying the houses cheaply, the council need more money to build or buy a new house. And then the council may need to sell the new house again cheaply to the next resident.

My relatives benefitted from Right to Buy and I think they absolutely did the right thing for themselves and am very glad they did it, but overall I think it's best for the country that the scheme is stopped.

Although I can see it's obviously very disappointing for you. An alternative point is that you wouldn't have your current flat if the previous resident had bought it through Right to Buy.

If I am now a council tenant for the rest of my life it's not freeing up a property is it ?

You're not a council tenant forever.

Right now you have a cheaper rent as you rent from the council.

You could save and buy as much as the next person.

There is no guarantee if you'd have brought that flat at a massive discount you'd have been able to afford a larger house and mortgage at a later date if you couldn't afford it whilst in your current property.

Another pointless argument that doesn't stack up.

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:26

I also now have a small lifetime ISA that I will never be able to use. It just all feels so bloody unfair. I've got a degree but can't even afford to have a child or buy a home, sorry just feeling sorry for myself.

Well yes because I would have eventually sold the flat and moved up the ladder Confused

The Conservative Party could elect a leader who if the migration rules that both candidates now support were in place them, could only have become a British citizen upon marriage. I doubt the OP would see it that as bad.

Times change and so can policies.

username1478 · 26/10/2024 18:29

I've never agreed with selling off social housing especially as the housing wasn't being replaced. There are millions on housing lists waiting for social housing during a housing crisis.

The government should introduce an affordable housing scheme for first time buyers.

You have enough to buy a house so rent privately, therefore freeing up the house for someone else.

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:31

I couldn't afford to rent privately in my area. I would have to move back in with my mum.

Oh dear. You also fell for the Labour Party myth that a degree will guarantee you a well-paid job. Welcome to the real world, OP. I’m just surprised it’s taken you this long to realise that nothing comes free in this life.

ElaborateCushion · 26/10/2024 18:32

The alleged rise in employer's NI isn't good news for employees either. As an employer we'll look at how much more it's going to cost us to employ our staff, which will affect how much budget we have for pay rises next year.

But councils are selling the flat below what it costs to build it so there is no money in the kitty to replace the stock. Feel sorry for yourself all you like but many people with degrees are renting privately and still can't afford to buy or have a child. At least you have some respite with subsidised rent and can actually save more of a deposit for a flat/house. I would say this is an exceptionally fortunate position you are in.

Selling a property to the tenant is removing it from availability permanently.

Ncocta · 26/10/2024 18:36

I am totally for removing the right to buy scheme - doesn’t make sense that the buyer then sells it and profits greatly at the expense of the council and us taxpayers. Or put in a condition if the buyer sells it within 20 years then they need to give back the profits if sale. This is one if the reasons why our councils are losing so much money when they could have sold it themselves and the money helps everyone

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:38

I could afford to buy the flat at the 50% discount they were offering, not at market value.

Paisleydad · 26/10/2024 18:38

The whole right to buy policy was a vote buyer for the Thatcher government (yes, councils had previously been able to sell to tenants). They protected 'their own' by not extending the right to private tenants.

The entire problem is down to stupid house prices and lack of rent control together.

Yes, I know, yet another dangerous pinko....

No but it would only belong to you for your life time. If you bought it then it’s one fewer house in the council owned stock. If they continue to own it, then when you/your spouse die it would be reallocated to a new tenant.

You've forgotten Johnson already?

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 18:40

So it's not going to make an impact on housing stock for the next 50 years until I die, we need more house building right now.

Well, if you have kids you will eventually get a larger council property which will free up the one bed flat you're in for someone else in your current position. If you bought it it would be then only available to those that could afford the market rate.To be honest you should count yourself lucky that you got a council flat at all. As a childfree, single person with no caring responsibilities, you'd stand no fucking chance in my city. My apologies if I've misread your situation however.

Doggymummar · 26/10/2024 18:42

So, buy it next year then, why can't you?
