What is on your kitchen counters?

Just that really. I’m asking because my friend thinks it’s odd to keep a toaster on the counter at all times. But I find it odd that she keeps her toaster in the cupboard when it’s not in use…

On my counters I have, a sink caddy, hot drinks station (kettle, Hotel Chocolate Velvetiser, tea, coffee and sugar canisters), a utensil jar, toaster, microwave (with a storage basket on top), a rotating herb/spice rack and a fruit bowl…

Toaster, bread bin, fruit bowl, regularly used recipe books, at one side. Kettle and tea/coffee/sugar pots on the other. By the sink, washing up liquid, soap and occasionally empty drinks bottles.

From left to right in an L-shaped kitchen:

kettle + large mug
frying pan on hob, to be cleaned
Ninja chopper x2
Instant Pot
utensil holder
knife block
wooden container of a dozen or so sauces/condiments
washing up liquid
washing up gloves
two jars in the washing-up queue
drying rack, currently filled
a general dumping ground for paper towels, cling film, tin foil and cleaning wipes, plus, inexplicably, their new friend the jar opener
air fryer
microwave, on top of which is a kitchen scale and measuring cups, plus for some reason always a pack of tortilla wraps, on top of which is the filled fruit bowl

It'd be nice if it looked saner but we use everything on the counter most days so there's no point rearranging. We don't buy bread so no need for a toaster, either.

The wooden container is a recent revelation as previously all the condiments were roaming about freely and that really did look a mess!

Putting a toaster away is nuts. Constantly plugging and unplugging it? And getting crumbs everywhere! Why???

We have kettle, teapot, tea, and coffee caddies, utensil pot, spoon rest, knife block, mug of pens, bread machine, SodaStream, SodaStream bottles, toaster, water filter jug, bottle drainer, microwave. It's not a big kitchen either Blush

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 20/10/2024 23:00

Magimix food processor.
kitchen paper in holder.
knife block.
toaster.
fruit bowl.

HomeCookingWannabe · 20/10/2024 23:01

Literally nothing.

I don't drink hot drinks so kettle is in cupboard for when guests come.

I love the look of a clear counter

PickAChew · 20/10/2024 23:06

All sorts. The main (pretty dualit) toaster is on the worktop. My gluten free (shitty cookworks) toaster gets kept in a cupboard so ds2 isn't tempted to use it.

I hate kitchens that look like an unlived in blank wall of cupboard doors. I want to live in my home, not on fucking Instagram.

Scenicgirl · 20/10/2024 23:07

Liquid hand wash and hand cream, a Jo Malone candle and usually some flowers. Everything else is hidden away in either cupboards or my larder cabinets.

TheChosenTwo · 20/10/2024 23:09

Ahh @AutumnLeaves24 - before we extended and did the kitchen we had things on the kitchen sides and it was one of the big things I insisted on, that it had to be designed well enough that every thing could be put away. Besides the kettle which actually sits on the windowsill, not on the sides themselves. The beer pump thing was an addition over lockdown I think, I wish it didn’t live there but to be honest it’s at the far left of where the sides begin and I can live with it!
I just hated that whenever I walked into the old kitchen there was so much ‘stuff’, it never felt clean (even though it was!).

Weegieunicorn · 20/10/2024 23:13

@downthepubwithstevienicks I was waiting on that 😂

Don’t you cook though? I use the kettle to boil water to go into pans to save time bringing them to the boil, for making stock/gravy in a jug, for cleaning the drains…

theemptinessmachine · 20/10/2024 23:31

Bread box, microwave, air fryer, kettle, toaster, tea caddy, Nespresso machine. It looks tidy though.

I have toaster, airfryer, kettle, scales, magnetic knife holder, trivet for hot pots, sink tidy, coffee/tea jars, fruit basket, kitchen roll.

I have never seen anyone put a toaster away after use. I guess it depends on how often you use it whether it is worth it.

Kettle and Thermomix. When we need to we bring out the toaster, ninja oven and rice cooker. Everything else is in the pantry or utility room. I'm hoping to install a hot water tap and get rid of the kettle.

vladimirVsvolodymr · 20/10/2024 23:53

I forgot the fruit bowl.

I’m clearly uneducated because I had to Google what a Thermomix, one cup boiler and aeropress was 😅

😂😂😂

I hate kitchens that look like they need a good scrub because there’s piles of crap everywhere and you know the kitchen aid isn’t being pulled out and wiped behind/under every time the counters need cleaning

Jeezitneverends · 20/10/2024 21:43

Nothing!

My kitchen was carefully planned to have enough cupboard space to store all appliances, we have a boiling tap so no kettle either

Can I ask what hot water tap you have? Hoping to get a Quooker fitted next year. Also how're you finding it? Thank you.

Willsnbills · 21/10/2024 00:03
