What is on your kitchen counters?

Just that really. I’m asking because my friend thinks it’s odd to keep a toaster on the counter at all times. But I find it odd that she keeps her toaster in the cupboard when it’s not in use…

On my counters I have, a sink caddy, hot drinks station (kettle, Hotel Chocolate Velvetiser, tea, coffee and sugar canisters), a utensil jar, toaster, microwave (with a storage basket on top), a rotating herb/spice rack and a fruit bowl…

Why do so many people leave kettles and toasters out when they’re not using them? Are they too big to fit in cupboards?

partly because I can’t be arsed with that and partly because the cupboards are full?

HÆLTHEPAIN · 20/10/2024 20:50

Microwave, coffee machine, Bibo machine and knife block. Then on the other side of the kitchen a butter dish, a big pot with utensils in and the fruit bowl.

Toaster lives in the pantry. Don’t have a kettle as the Bibo does that.

Our kettle is used several times a day it would be pointless putting it away .The toaster has a cover and would be a pain to get in and out with the crumbs etc .

My kitchen is tiny. All I have on my worktops are my kettle, small coffee machine, tea, coffee, sugar cannisters and a fruit bowl. Ontop of my cooker I have these glass plates which double as an extra surface space and my Airfryer lives ontop. Then of course my draining board next to my sink

WillowtreeHouse · 20/10/2024 21:14

Kitchen aid, bread bin, cake tin, toaster, kettle, knife block, spice rack.

Xanadu58 · 20/10/2024 21:19

I've got a very small kitchen with limited worktop space . I've got kettle, toaster, air fryer , water filter jug, microwave and utensil pot and an Alexa smart speaker.

NotMeNoNo · 20/10/2024 21:20

Quite a lot as we are short of cupboards.
Microwave, tea/coffee/sugar canisters, kettle, bread bin, box of medicines, some bottles, two jars of utensils, toaster and bread maker. A big wooden chopping board and a granite slab/worktop saver.

I don't worry about a few useful items being visible though, I think it makes the room look interesting.

I don’t keep the toaster out. It lives in a cupboard. I have a kettle and recently got microwave out and started using that. I don’t like having anything out.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 20/10/2024 21:22

Microwave
Toaster
Kettle
A small plastic box with washing up liquid, sponge etc. in it next to the sink.

Duvetdweller · 20/10/2024 21:24

Nothing - literally not one thing. I can’t stand mess. Everything is in a cupboard and I have a boiling tap.

VioletCrawleyForever · 20/10/2024 21:26

Microwave
Kettle
Coffee machine
Air fryer

Bread bin

Worktops - Kitchen aid mixer, small caddy with washing up sponge & liquid, toaster, little tray with a utensil jar and salt/pepper grinders.

Window sill - pot plant & radio

Despite electric kettles made me laugh! How can you despise an inanimate object haha.

We've got quite a bit. Usual stuff above like kettle and toaster (both used multiple times a day), knife block, tea/coffee/sugar tins (used multiple times a day), little tray with oil, salt and pepper on.

Had a new kitchen in the summer and the over-opinionated sparky was discussing sockets with me and did a SIOB when I mentioned about having appliances out all the time. He was like "oh no no no! You want everything stored away!". Erm, no, I don't mate. I actually like my kitchen to be efficient and don't care too much about what other people think.

Anyway, to wind him up me and one of the fitters then walked around pretending what sockets would be needed for allll the kitchen appliances that would be on the worktops 24/7..."air fryer, slow cooker, blender, coffee machine, waffle maker, bread maker, soda stream" etc...made it into a fun Generation Game 🤣

Ihatemondays1962 · 20/10/2024 21:34

Just a microwave and a kettle. I hate clutter on the worktop.

MikeRafone · 20/10/2024 21:36

see to me having a built in microwave is saving cluttering up the worktops, but a kettle and toaster in cupboards is a hassle to get out and in each time, especially with crumbs from the toaster

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/10/2024 21:38

The microwave, the toaster and kettle, and generally one of my cats..

macshoto · 20/10/2024 21:39

Espresso machine, coffee grinder, kettle, mug tree, draining rack, charging station, salt/pepper grinders, oil. That's about it:

Toaster lives in a pantry style cupboard where it can be used in situ (together with the soda stream and a stick blender). The other end of the pantry unit contains the microwave.

Electric kettles have no personality 😉
Whistling kettles are much nicer to have around. Plus they are cheaper to run on induction but that’s not such a good reason.

RagzRebooted · 20/10/2024 21:41

Kettle, toaster, coffee machine, microwave, airfryer. 3x canisters. Jar of utensils. Fruit bowl. Bread bin.
It's a small kitchen with hardly any worktop or cupboards, so it's never going to be minimalist.
At least I didn't unpack the deep fryer when we moved!

MaltipooMama · 20/10/2024 21:41

I'm lucky because even though my house isn't massive the kitchen is pretty large so a lot of counter space, lucky because I like lots of things out! Mine from left to right all the way around the kitchen is:

Cafetière
Bread-bin
Knife block
Little corner with storage containers for cereal
Kettle
Paper towel holder
Microwave
Tassimo
Tea/coffee/sugar vertical stacking canisters
Utensils holder
Egg house
Ninja smoothie maker
Babymoov nutribaby
Ninja Foodi

Lots of stuff 😂

Driedonion · 20/10/2024 21:43

Nespresso machine plus a container with pods
Container of utensils
toaster
breadbin
egg storage
washing up liquid
kitchen waste compost bin
kettle
tea and coffee containers

On the island:
butter dish
fruit bowl
kitchen towel roll

window sill:
herbs in pots

Jeezitneverends · 20/10/2024 21:43

Nothing!

My kitchen was carefully planned to have enough cupboard space to store all appliances, we have a boiling tap so no kettle either

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/10/2024 21:44

I have a tiny kitchen (central London flat) with a microwave/grill, toaster (!), coffee machine, coffee grinder and kettle. No way would I keep my toaster in a cupboard. It would feel far too much like an AirBNB.
