What is on your kitchen counters?

notsureunsure · 20/10/2024 20:07

Just that really. I’m asking because my friend thinks it’s odd to keep a toaster on the counter at all times. But I find it odd that she keeps her toaster in the cupboard when it’s not in use…

On my counters I have, a sink caddy, hot drinks station (kettle, Hotel Chocolate Velvetiser, tea, coffee and sugar canisters), a utensil jar, toaster, microwave (with a storage basket on top), a rotating herb/spice rack and a fruit bowl…

Toaster
kitchen roll
microwave
kettle
fruit bowl
and most importantly dog biscuit tin!

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 20/10/2024 21:48

My kitchenaid
This pestle abd mortar abd the matching pinch pot

that's it. I like a clear kitchen worktop. I only keep the kitchen aid out because I use it constantly and it would be ridiculous to keep puttin it away

I’ve got one of those air fryers that does toast and microwaves so it was goodbye to those two appliances. I’ve got an instant pot in the corner. Lots of succulent plants by window ledge. A wooden bowl of home grown peppers which is not always there obviously.

Cannot bear to have things on the counters if I can help it.

A beer pump Phillips thing you put kegs in and a kettle. That’s it. I don’t use either of them and would happily get rid of both 😂
I hate stuff on kitchen sides, we cook proper meals every night and the amount of cleaning up afterwards is always quite a lot so at least I’m not having to contend with moving 20 things to do it.
It also just looks messy. We built this kitchen and designed it to have deep drawers and enough cupboards for storage to house appliances etc. we don’t have a toaster though, the grill does just fine.

Bs0u416d · 20/10/2024 21:58

Nothing. We have a work top hidden behind doors for coffee machine, toaster etc.

Too fucking much. In my ideal world I would have nothing bar a small breadbin and a couple of aesthetically pleasing jars filled with pasta and coffee.

In reality from left to right:
Large breadbin
Toaster
Egg box
Flapjack tin
Charging station complete with vomiting wires and random charging electricals

Kettle
Knife block
Collection of tea, coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, salt and pepper cellar, cooking oil

The windowsill has herbs in various states of sadness growing in pots, washing up liquid, sponge and cloth pot.

I am not a tidy person by nature.

Love your honesty! I'm not tidy either. We have a lot of worktop space. Wooden chopping board left of hob, airfryer on right along with various oils, salt, pepper, salad dressings then the sink. Then we have a peninsula with another wooden chopping board above the integrated bin. Then bread bin plus toaster and butter dish then eleventy billion coffee makers, Alexa show, wine rack. I wouldn't mind but our kitchen is only a couple of years old and there's only 2 of us! Kitchen is huge all cupboards are full!

Crispynoodle · 20/10/2024 21:59

Oh dear I forgot the kettle plus sugar canister

AutumnLeaves24 · 20/10/2024 22:10

it's normal to have your toaster on the worktop if it's used frequently. I don't have one as I'm not supposed to eat bread & I have a very old 'cooker' with an over the top grill (kitchen being replaced) if I'm being bad & making toast.

i have a friend whose house is a complete midden, complete with literally piles of stuff on the worktop who puts her toaster in a cupboard (because it's scruffy to have it on the counter 😂😂😂😂)

I have FAR FAR FAR more than I'd like, my kitchen is tiny with hardly any worktop, but hardly any cupboards either!

I caved in and bought an air fryer, which I actually live & I've used 'the big oven' twice since I've had the AF. When I do the kitchen I'm going to put in the appropriate unit to house an oven, but not put one in, & use the space differently.

THEN my very old coffee machine Philips Senseo) died & I wanted a latte making coffee machine that didn't use pods, so I ended up with a (huge) Sage coffee machine.

then all kinds of usual bits (utensil
pot/kettle/paper towel roll/ olive oil/etc)

I saw a photo of it pre air fryer & coffee machine & I love the clear worktop & how much lighter it looks, but I love them both...

Each to their own, but it's very normal to have a toaster on your worktop. Pay no attention to your friend!!

Absolutely nothing except the soap dispenser by the sink, and a vase of flowers sitting on a wooden chopping board. We had the kitchen done last summer and love that everything has its place meaning the worktops are completely clutter free - huge difference from how the old kitchen was! 🙈

frijolito · 20/10/2024 22:12

Loads of stuff - kettle, toaster, instant pot, stand mixer, knife block, jar of utensils, pot of salt, giant pepper grinder, oil, microwave, sodastream, mug tree, bowl of fruit, jars of pulses/grains. Pile of washing up. Radio, sink caddy, water filter jug, kitchen roll, parsley plant and tea canisters on the windowsill too, and we have an Ikea trolley thing with stuff stored on too.

Life’s too short to lift the kettle in and out of the cupboard 10 times a day! We’re a bit short of cupboard space too, and the instant pot and stand mixer are a bit heavy to move about a lot. We don’t even use the toaster all that much but moving it always seems to produce crumbs no matter how recently it was tipped out.

To me the idea of putting the kettle in the cupboard makes as much sense as putting the sofa in the loft when you’re not sitting on it. The toaster less so but it’s not far off.

@TheChosenTwo

i would too if my kitchen was bigger! Even when I replace it (it's crumbling!!) it's not able to be made any bigger! No room for deep drawers or anywhere near enough cupboards! 🥲🥲

DancingNotDrowning · 20/10/2024 22:16

Nothing except a caddy by the sink with washing up liquid and a brush and cloth.

I have a wooden tray at the end of the island with some plants.

that’s it.

PondWarrior · 20/10/2024 22:17

Fruit bowl, kitchen scales, orange press, coffee grinder, coffee machine, salt pig, jar full of large utensils, various oils, salt, pepper, Kenwood Chef, kettle, toaster. 😂 I wouldn’t want to be rummaging around in cupboards for these things all the time - not that we’d have the cupboard space anyway!

Vimaybe · 20/10/2024 22:18

Kettle, microwave, velvetiser (I did consider popping this away, but it's so pretty!), peace lily, wooden chopping board, soda stream and photo frame and picture my son made a nursery.

More stuff out = more stuff to clean around in my head.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 20/10/2024 22:20

Toaster, with chopping boards tucked behind it. Kettle. Olive and rapeseed oil bottles. Salt and pepper mills. Butter dish. Utensil jar. Plant pot.

TashaTudor · 20/10/2024 22:20

Kettle and cannisters.
Toaster in cupboard

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 20/10/2024 22:23

I have a microwave, kettle, toaster (which if I had cupboard space for, would absolutely be put away), a utensils jar and a decorative bowl with keys and odds n sods in.
I hate cluttered surfaces and have nominal work top space in my kitchen as it is so try to keep it as clear as possible.

getthosetitsup · 20/10/2024 22:25

Psilocybin · 20/10/2024 20:42

Why do so many people leave kettles and toasters out when they’re not using them? Are they too big to fit in cupboards?

I have never met anyone that puts their kettle and toaster away.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 20/10/2024 22:25

Are all the posters saying they keep their toaster in the cupboard Protestants?

Meecrowavay · 20/10/2024 22:27

Toaster and kettle. Amazon Alexa device. Fruit bowl.

Coffee machine and microwave inside a pantry style cupboard.

FortunataTagnips · 20/10/2024 22:28

Everything.

Charging phones
Assorted oils, vinegars
Coffee, tea and herbal tea containers
Utensil jar
Salt and pepper grinders
Ninja 15-in-1 multicooker
Kettle
Olive oil pourer
Washing up stuff in a caddy
Washing up liquid
Drainer
Chopping Boards
Microwave
Ice cream maker
Bread maker
Fruit bowl
Toaster

Plus loads of stuff on the window ledge.

TashaTudor · 20/10/2024 22:31

I put the toaster away because it's rarely used and its easy enough to get and plug in then put away.
I don't have a bug kitchen though and like clear surfaces to prep food etc

Floranan · 20/10/2024 22:31

Oh dear, right now,

starting at the end ( my kitchen is a square u shape a good size with a table in the middle fir 6 chairs, the end has the door to the house and French doors to the kitchen so it sounds a lot but it’s spread out ….. ish )

slow cooker Tea/coffee/sugar pots squash bottles kettle then sink with plants on the window sill. Airfryer in corner round to utensils in a pot, oil bottle x 2 those chilli / garlic oils, salt and pepper, Oven. Spice turny thing. Big chopping board and knife block. Kenwood in corner round to bread bin. Rice cooker. Toaster. Bread machine. Trays slotted by bread machine against the side of the fridge

over the bread bin and rice cooker is a shelve built into the cupboard if you know what I mean, it has a selection of my wrendale plates jugs etc looks rather cluttered but I love it.

DH always says it’s to cluttered but it’s my kitchen and I love it.

oh I should mention the table, placemats, fruit bowl, a half painted money box granddaughter was doing today sat on a piece of paper with all her paints round I promised she could finish it tomorrow, a coffee mug half packet of biscuits my kindle and for some reason a screw driver

edit to add sat on my hob is my rather lovely tagine

CallYourselfAChef · 20/10/2024 22:32

Ninja Foodie, toaster, butter dish, kettle, fruit bowl.

GreenMarigold · 20/10/2024 22:37

When it is tidy? Kettle, tea and coffee jars, toaster, bread bin, microwave, scales, egg rack, kitchen roll holder, tray for washing up liquid and hand soap.

On kitchen windowsill, array of vases and plants and a chicken ornament.
