What is on your kitchen counters?

Just that really. I’m asking because my friend thinks it’s odd to keep a toaster on the counter at all times. But I find it odd that she keeps her toaster in the cupboard when it’s not in use…

On my counters I have, a sink caddy, hot drinks station (kettle, Hotel Chocolate Velvetiser, tea, coffee and sugar canisters), a utensil jar, toaster, microwave (with a storage basket on top), a rotating herb/spice rack and a fruit bowl…

I hate kitchens that look like they need a good scrub because there’s piles of crap everywhere and you know the kitchen aid isn’t being pulled out and wiped behind/under every time the counters need cleaning

There is a happy medium, though. I keep my main food prep areas completely clear.

I also don't have wanky, useless stuff like candles and plants on my worktops (other than the occasional pot of herbs)

Kettle
Shelf with tea coffee sugar etc on
Shelf with spices
Microwave
Air fryer
Ninja blender thing
Slow cooker
Eggs

A cat that doesn't live here

@frijolito Up until a month ago yes, but my new induction hob heats water quicker than the kettle (something I'm not yet used to).

Kitchenaid, kettle and toaster.

Worriedaboutdoggo · 21/10/2024 08:18

Nothing, other than a utensil stand thing. My toaster lives in the cupboard!!

Sortumn · 21/10/2024 08:20

Toaster in the bread corner. Air fryer. Coffee and tea canisters that we don't actually use. Kettle, fruit bowl, Spice rack, pot with paint brushes in

Retata · 21/10/2024 08:22

All my appliances are on the countertop as there’s no space for them in a cupboard, don’t have a toaster, but got a mixer, pressure cooker, rice cooker and dehydrator on the counter top.

Manchesterbythesea · 21/10/2024 08:23

Kettle, coffee, tea, sugar bowl etc
Fruit bowl, wine, air fryer, scales
Toaster, utensil jar.

Other shite..post, vitamins, a dead plant waiting for resuscitation, Alexa etc
The toaster is used so much, can’t imagine not having it out all the time.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/10/2024 08:24

Microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee machine, sink caddy. At the moment I also have an electric rice cooker, because it was only delivered yesterday and I'm still admiring it and playing with it Grin. Dh hates stuff on the counters though, so I'm going to try and find cupboard space for it!

What are the (to me mysterious, but to you probably inevitable) consequences of not wiping under the Kitchen Aid every time?

Natsku · 21/10/2024 08:29

On the big worktop there's the coffee maker, the gluten toaster, knife block, tub for extra knives, big catering cling film box, kettle, insulated cup that I use for water in the sauna and doesn't have a spot in any of the cupboards, dirty dishes until the evening. On the other side of the sink there's cleaning materials like spray bottles etc. On the small worktop next to the oven is a spice rack and a kitchen roll holder, at least one pen, a disinfectant spray bottle for some reason, a bottle of liquid antihistamine that's probably out of date. On either of the worktops at any time there is likely to be a couple of food bag clips.

On the kitchen table is the microwave, the gluten free toaster, and the fruit bowls. The kitchen table is essentially another worktop, its not used for eating at.

Samesame47 · 21/10/2024 08:29

I have my kettle, tea/coffee caddy’s a knife block, utensils pot, salt pepper and olive oil. The toaster/microwave and ninja live in the utility room, I like my kitchen tops as clear as possible, much easier for cleaning and I generally dislike clutter

Vettrianofan · 21/10/2024 08:32

Kettle, toaster, food processor, Tefal one cup machine, knife block, olive oil, porridge oats container, chopping boards, breadboard, bread container, and biscuit barrels, some diluting juices etc. And random bits of clutter!

We use toaster daily so there's no way it's getting stored in a cupboard.

Jeezitneverends · 21/10/2024 08:41

@vladimirVsvolodymr we have a pronteau-does exactly the same job for half the price of the quooker. I’d recommend it

Well if the counter needs cleaning and you merely clean in front of any items on your counter then the fairly inevitable consequence is your counter is not in fact clean.

Specifically, depending on how long you leave the normal detritus of cooking and food prep (food crumbs, grease splatters, liquid spills etc) you are going to end up with smells, bugs and possibly food poisoning. An unclean kitchen also looks pretty grim.

I’m surprised you don’t know this, but tbf I’m genuinely surprised how some people live.

GreenBag53 · 21/10/2024 10:05

Airfryer, microwave and kettle

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/10/2024 10:18

I have a big kitchen it’s why we bought the house.

Ninja air fryer
Bean to cup coffee machine
Spice rack
Basket of eggs
Fruit bowl
Kettle

Our toaster has always been in the cupboard but it’s just broken, I have discovered toast can be made in the air fryer so it’s not being replaced.

icebearforpresident · 21/10/2024 10:33

Kitchen aid
Toaster
Kettle
Tea/Coffee/sugar canisters
An imitation nesprrsso machine which we haven’t used all year
The corner of shame - the corner where you can’t see anything until you walk right in. It’s where the bread lives but is also home to a second loaf, the biscuit tin, my iron & vitamin c supplements, the Gousto recipe file, a recycling box for insulin pens, various bits of paperwork we need to file or hold on to, bits of craft we want the kids to forget about before we throw it in the bin (it’s in sight so if they go looking for it in six months we can honestly say it was there for ages before we threw it out), and the oven gloves & a tea towel over the oven door handle

We did our kitchen a few years ago and I was so determined to have nothing beyond the toaster, kettle etc sitting out. It lasted about 6 weeks. At least I refused the kitchen designers insistence that we have open shelving or god knows what state it would be in by now.

EveryDayisFriday · 21/10/2024 10:37

Too much, can't wait to have a new kitchen with proper storage so I can have clear worktops. Currently I have out: soup maker, brita jug, toaster, ninja smoothie maker, coffee machine, kitchen roll, microwave and ninja foodi 14-1.

I want an integrated microwave and storage for mostly all appliances. I'm a minimalist at heart but love a gadget.

DilemmaDelilah · 21/10/2024 11:31

I have LOTS of counter space so most of it is clear. On the left of the hob I have toaster, bread bin, air fryer, then about 5ft of clear space before a spoon rest and a trivet. On the 3ft of counter on the other side of the hob I have 2 utensil jars, then the sink. I also have a 4ft wood counter top on the other side of the kitchen which holds my fruit bowl, the coffee maker and the kettle.

DatingDinosaur · 21/10/2024 11:44

Kettle, small bin (for dead teabags/compost fodder), draining rack, chopping board, hot pan trivet, microwave, fruit basket.

Everything else is in cupboards.

After a daddy long legs popped up nice and crisp on my toast once, I no longer have a toaster - I just use the grill.

I disagree. I don't clean under my appliances very often. When I do, there are sometimes crumbs. No bugs. No smells. The kitchen does not look 'pretty grim', because the visible parts of it are clean. And the last time I had food poisoning was in about 1992 after unwisely eating crab soup from a slightly insalubrious-looking Chinese restaurant. I don't think crumbs would have done that tbh.

My parents kept their toaster in a cupboard and I found it rather strange. Mine stays in the worktop. Who wants to keep getting out of the cupboard several times a day. Crumbs 8n the cupboard is more hassle to clean than wiping a workto0.

Psilocybin · 21/10/2024 16:31

How are people eating toast multiple times a day? I’m doing Being A Person wrong! Haven’t had toast for ages.
