Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

I really hope you are joking. No one can be this selfishly wrapped up in themselves can they ?

My stbexH & I disagreed over where to go on honeymoon (a bad sign really!). He wanted to go to NYC. 3 weeks later 9/11 happened. He was annoyed as 'it won't be the same now, I wanted to go up the Twin Towers'. Extraordinary!

MiserableAboutMilton · 09/10/2024 17:01

I feel sick…I have family out there not in an evacuation zone but a bit further south down the coast. They can’t evacuate easily (elderly, dementia) and the slow movement of the hurricane tracker south is scaring the shit out of me. It’s gone from Tampa to Sarasota and if it keeps up with that trend they’re going to be in trouble.

They have hurricane shutters etc but it’s going to be a long night.

Does anyone know if the evacuation zones are a dynamic thing - are they likely to change them now if the direction of the storm changes? I’m consoling myself that they haven’t actually been told to leave so maybe it will be ok…..but then it’s too late now anyway right, even if it’s direction shifts?

Sorry to the Americans on this thread when I say this but 'That's America for you'.

(Noting we have own share of fuckwits here too).

No you're being OTT. It's perfectly understandable she's upset at losing potentially a holiday of a life time for her children.

NOPE. As I already said - NOT the thread for it.

Who made you the judge and jury on what a thread is for?

Common sense and empathy for other people.

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 17:10

At this stage, probably not. There comes a point where it is safer to stay at home. Flood risk areas would have been evacuated anyway.

Obviously I feel for the people there. That should go without saying!

This is a huge situation that is affecting people in many different ways.

We are all entitled to feel what we feel and I will not be shamed for being concerned about my holiday. If it was your holiday, you would be too, as much as you may pretend you wouldn't be!!

Such virtue signalling... and policing of what is deemed an acceptable concern, get over yourselves!!

So it's ok to worry for the 'kitties' of Florida but not be concerned for a very expensive and much looked forward to family holiday.

And to the poster that said at least we won't get school fines, you don't get fined in our school, it's independent so school fines were never a consideration thank you!

Ah mate, stop posting! You're not helping yourself!!

Especially mentioning your fee paying school on mumsnet!

I'd be gutted, but my complaining about it would probably start and end with my family and insurance company.

Oh please go away. Idc about your stupid holiday in florida.

I care about the animals and the people who are directly impacted.

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 17:14

I have sympathy for people losing their holiday. Why not? But it is pretty low down my list. Though I think you undermine your case with the independent school comment.

This HAS to be a wind up!

Anyway, thinking of everyone who will genuinely suffer from this storm.

notimagain · 09/10/2024 17:17

@Onlyonekenobe

I was just looking at some of the satellite images and noticed that Milton and the storm brewing off the east coast of FL are both rotating counter-clockwise. Looked it up and apparently north of the equator they do always rotate counter-clockwise and are called hurricanes; south of the equator they rotate clockwise and are called cyclones.

Direction of circulation is all down to the earth’s rotation and a thing called Corilos effect/force.

It’s the same mechanism at work with Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons, generically known as Tropical Revolving Storms

Throwing out words like "shamed" and "virtue signalling" doesn't detract from the fact that you're equating money and holidays, with human life and suffering and animal life. You should be ashamed. Pointing out your lack of compassion, circumspection and self-awareness isn't signalling any virtues on my part - it's paraphrasing what you yourself have written.

We went to Disney earlier this year so I’m still on a lot of “Disney Holiday” Facebook pages. Lots of people saying Disney is one of the safest places to be (in a hotel that is) - the hotels are all built to withstand Category 5 storms, they provide emergency packages of food/water/etc to every room before the storms hit. The parks are closing at 2pm local time today to allow people time to get back to their hotels and staff to get home. Disney has its own electrical grid, etc so will not be affected by power outages.

I’ve seen it said that locals often book themselves into the cheapest Disney hotels when a big storm comes in as they know it’s one of the safest places to be.

I have a friend (Canadian) who is out in Orlando on holiday at the moment. Her hotel (not a Disney one) have reassured guests that they’ve forward planned for this and it will be a case of staying in rooms/within the hotel building for about 24 hours to ride it out.

That's great to hear they care about their guests, but what about their poor staff? If they are open they need to be staffed. What if they wanted to evacuate? It's pure greed.

No, apparently not! Turns out that's an urban myth. Seem the Coriolis effect (pp mentioned above) is a function of the difference in speed of rotation of the earth on its axis at the equator versus the poles. Toilet bowls and plugholes are just too small to be affected by that; other factors like where the water enters and the shape of the hole/bowl are what determine the direction the water swirls in.

Sorry but your posts are incredibly insensitive.
Yes feel sad about your holiday, I would too, but people on here are worrying about the lives of their loved ones.

You will be able to get your money back from your insurance. People won't be able to get their loved ones back.

Maybe start your own thread on the holiday section of MN to discuss this and let people worry about things that actually matter here.

Lakeyloo · 09/10/2024 17:24

I don't have any connection to the area (apart from having been there once) and don't know anyone there, but I will be thinking of everyone affected (be it directly or because they have family or friends there) over the coming hours. I'm in no way religious but I am tempted to say a little prayer.
Even our local radio station is leading on it now.
Having been caught in what was predicted to be a Cat 4 but then lowered to a Cat 3 back in the 90's, i can only begin to imagine what everyone is going through. The pictures from above are terrifying... nature is certainly a force and there is nothing you can do to stop it, it's so much bigger than us (despite what we might like to think)

So frustrating when all you can offer is thoughts and best wishes.

I went to America for the first time in my life this year and loved it, was in Orlando. I'm worried about Disney World and all the people who work there, will they have to close it. And what about cruise ships, there are cruise ports at Miami and Port Canaveral, wouldn't like to be on a ship in that weather.

God forbid Disney gets hit 😂
