Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Common sense and empathy for other people.

It has nothing to do with common sense and you can be empathetic toward all the various ways that people are going to be affected by the hurricane. I feel desperately sorry for those whose lives are in danger but can also feel sad for family who has been excitedly looking forward to Disney world for a year.

Grandmasswagbag · 09/10/2024 17:30

Do they evacuate whole hospitals? I don't understand how it all works. All the people driving away where are they going ? Just out the path of the worst bit?

Hospitals will be pretty strong buildings.

A FB friend avoided Hurricane Ian by sailing 175 miles south and then sailing back after the storm passed

I read that they evacuated a prison. I bet that was a logistical minefield. And to where?

It's something like 4500 prisoners have been moved. I'm assuming to other prisons? Or secure locations with space and then if the prison survives, they'll be moved back

I am watching live on Fox news. This is horrific absolutely horrific. Those poor people, children and animals.

Does anyone know if it could significantly reduce before it hits land?

No they wont. They're prefab like the rest of US infratructure. They'll be built to take top weight but not a wall of water or being submerged. Their orange wall of defence likely wont do a thing other than help break waves.

It has dropped from a 5 to a 4.

From my understanding it would need to hit the perfect temperature water to really dissipate? If it hits warm water it gains energy and I'm sure I've seen that if it hits cold water that'll make it more volatile

Sadly the water is just going to get warmer. This, and worse, is the future. We could act robustly and minimise it but it will take huge political will and that will only come if the masses demand it. Write to your MPs folks. Tell them the climate crisis is the key issue of our time and you want to know the government is doing everything it can. It’s not.

Yes, over 130 medical facilities in and around Tampa have been evacuated to farther afield medical facilities with extra capacity. The buildings may be strong, it's the flooding and power outages that are the concern, together with the supply chain (of food and medical supplies) which may be disrupted for days on end.

Same for prisoners being evacuated to close-enough correctional facilities that won't suffer disruption.

People are driving to friends, family, hotels, motels, airbnbs etc. You pack up your car and go to wherever you can go. You're on your own to make whatever arrangements suit you best. Homeless people will use state-funded shelters. Schools are being repurposed for sheltering. Many houses will have basement shelters for tornadoes and hurricanes, but the risk is flooding. State-owned shelters will do what they can, preserving resources for the emergency services (whose personnel are going to take a real battering over the next couple of weeks).

I do think about farm animals, stables etc.

We were living in a high-rise in NY during Hurricane Sandy. The evacuation orders came in in waves: strongly recommend you leave; if you're staying fill your bathtub with water; we are now shutting down elevators; if you're still here the emergency services won't come to your rescue and you're now on your own (God bless and good luck, basically). It's a rehearsed process, and there's plenty of warning and resource in place. The news blackout when it's actually happening is what's scary (especially when you're hunkered down in the dark, using candles and stressed out of your skull!).

That big pink castle is probably a pretty safe place to be 😁

For the people piling on and tearing @fundsandfrolics a new arse hole, I’m sure she is as concerned for the people of Florida as everyone but two things can be true at the same time. People can be horrified and concerned at the potential devastation but also, and understandably, conscious of how it is also going to affect them if they are planning to be in the area in the immediate aftermath.

It would be odd if someone who was due to travel to Disney in the next few days wasn’t contemplating how their trip would be impacted by the hurricane so I don’t think that sharing a link on a thread about the hurricane for those also potentially affected in some way by the hurricane (albeit not to the same extent as the residents) makes her a terrible human.

Honestly I’m sure there are some people who read mumsnet who sit down there practically gagging to give someone a kicking.

The difference is most people with two brain cells to rub together would filter those thoughts and keep it to themselves. Not post about it on a thread on the internet about a storm that is about to kill hundreds of people.

Discuss your upset at not going on a rollercoaster at home with your family. it's really not that difficult to understand. HTH

Exactly

The poster was unreasonable to post about a bloody holiday on this thread.

I can't believe someone would open the thread and think that anyone would give a shiney shit about their bloosy holiday

SuperBlondie28 · 09/10/2024 17:53

I actually feel ashamed that we British people (and Scottish, Welsh, Irish) frequently moan about a piddly bit of rain and cold.
We obviously have flooding sometimes which is bad but we still tend to moan too much about our normal weather daily

Well if it said it on tiktok it must be right!

What a horrible thing to repeat. You do realise that it's not actually possible for the entire state (or even 'only' those with the an evacuation order) to leave their homes? Where do you think they would go? And how the hell do you think they would get there?

The roads to to the North of Tampa are currently at a total standstill and there's no fuel. Family that live there have decided to stay which is worrying, but they would rather see out the hurricane in their house/shelter than stuck on the highway with no fuel.

Not sure why you are having a go at the poster you quoted. What they have said is what the authorities are telling people to do.

Onlyonekenobe · 09/10/2024 17:21

No, apparently not! Turns out that's an urban myth. Seem the Coriolis effect (pp mentioned above) is a function of the difference in speed of rotation of the earth on its axis at the equator versus the poles. Toilet bowls and plugholes are just too small to be affected by that; other factors like where the water enters and the shape of the hole/bowl are what determine the direction the water swirls in.

That is disappointing.

@Onlyonekenobe During Sandy, were you in the power cut area, south of 49th or north ?
My Dad was south. Luckily he had a gad hob and a neighbour still had her old phone that did not need power
but it was a long six days to see if he was OK

Exactly this. Anyone would feel disappointed, but almost everyone would have the sense to keep it for conversations in rl at this point, or whatever corners of FB exist to scoop up this kind of thing.

Whining about your Disney holiday and getting refunds because the big rides are closed on a thread like this is astonishing.

Coming back to whine about being criticised for it is something else.

Oh please go away. Idc about your stupid holiday in florida.

I care about the animals and the people who are directly impacted.

Animals and kids especially. I of course feel sick for the adults involved but the kids and animals won't even understand what's really happening which makes it even scarier. I can't even imagine how everyone is feeling there. It's not often, apart from war, I feel physically sick for strangers, but this is just horrendous.

South, on the 31st floor! With a baby! We went to a friend in SoHo (tiny studio apt, no experience of babies, boy was the fun!) and made is just in time to see the flash of the electrical blowout and then silence and pitch black. Once it was over, my DH walked 19 blocks to the nearest phone box to call family to say we're ok (and to cascade the message back to the UK). We were all fine. It was the people out on Long Island who really suffered the most. Terrible times for them.

betsyfloormop · 09/10/2024 18:02

Somebody way back posted a link to some live cameras from the area.

There are people taking each others photos and standing in the spray coming off the sea..are they insane?

My stbexH & I disagreed over where to go on honeymoon (a bad sign really!). He wanted to go to NYC. 3 weeks later 9/11 happened. He was annoyed as 'it won't be the same now, I wanted to go up the Twin Towers'. Extraordinary!

People really show their true colours, don't they!

Talkinpeace · 09/10/2024 18:02

@Onlyonekenobe 31st with no elevators - yikes

Dad's apartment was second floor but overlooked the East River.
When I went to visit him that Christmas, our rental looked down on the remains of the substation.

He remembers that week as the most incredible pulling together of New Yorkers and almost no crime.
