Hurricane Milton

Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Should be called hurricane Exon-Mobil tbh

Agree.

Elseaknows · 08/10/2024 21:35

I'm surprised at the lack of coverage. I hope anyone who has stayed remains safe :(

DaisyDoo09 · 08/10/2024 21:36

There seemed to of been very little coverage of storm helene also .

absolutelydone · 08/10/2024 21:37

Been following this online. Was surprised there wasn’t a thread on here about it! It’s on the dreaded DM site.

Must be terrifying!

Talkinpeace · 08/10/2024 21:38

The Government will not evacuate people.
THose with no money and resources will be left behind (see also Katrina and Maria and others)

Superworm24 · 08/10/2024 21:43

Saying they are refusing to evacuate is unfair. Plenty are unable to. The supermarkets have been stripped bare. Gas stations have shut as they have been drained and are now empty. I'm hoping it manages to burn itself out before it hits land.

Happierthaneverr · 08/10/2024 21:45

Many people lost their vehicles or their vehicles were damaged by Helene. Fuel is running very low in many places too.

BorgQueen · 08/10/2024 21:46

Disney/Universal are nowhere near Tampa, it’s over an hour’s drive and the parks are nowhere near the coast, even Busch Gardens is inland in Tampa but I imagine it will be closed.
Disney are brilliant with their onsite guests if a lockdown is ordered. Food and water are delivered to all the rooms but I doubt the parks will even close.
I’m more concerned about St Petes and Clearwater on the coast, if there are 15ft storm surges it will be brutal. I’ll be watching the webcam on the Hilton at Clearwater.

God help those poor people, it looks awful there!

Saw earlier that Disney and universal will now close https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/disney-world-universal-orlando-remain-open-ahead-hurricane-114604789

Thanks for the tip on the Hilton webcam. Just had a look and thankfully it looks relatively calm right now.

sorry, just seen a few people beat me to sharing this update.

Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld will all close ahead of Milton

Orlando's tourism machine began grinding to a halt with at least two major theme parks and the main airport announcing closures ahead of Hurricane Milton's expected hit as a major storm in Florida

Figment1982 · 08/10/2024 21:53

My dad is in Orlando right now. His timing is terrible.. he was originally planning to go to Canada but was worried about forest fires, so booked for Florida and Texas instead. He’s only meant to be there from Sunday until Friday 🙄.

What’s annoying me is that he’s being so blasé and sending messages being all jokey about it. I worry he’s not taking this seriously enough.. we’ve been through hurricanes before in Orlando (he’s at the family holiday home) which always ended up being far less devastating than the forecasts and I think this is causing him to let his guard down. Keep reminding myself that it’s normally Orlando where everyone gets evacuated TO so I shouldn’t be too concerned about him!

BorgQueen · 08/10/2024 21:59

Yes, just seen that the parks are closing at 2pm tomorrow. Looks like Milton is tracking farther South, through Sarasota rather than Tampa but that could change.

Just seen a bloke on X called icyclone, he’s a storm chaser and is in Tampa

BurntBroccoli · 08/10/2024 22:05

Looks like it's due to track very near Orlando.
So worrying with the massive storm surges of 3 metres predicted in some places. 😞

A weather man was crying on us news

HappierTimesAhead · 08/10/2024 22:24

ViciousCurrentBun · 08/10/2024 18:01

My friend lives in Florida, just had a msg that he isn’t evacuating. Have seen clips on tik tok of complete gridlock and petrol being sold out plus commercial flights out of Florida have risen form $200 to $800? On the BBC there was a very concerned looking meteorologist saying this is on a level with Hurricane Katrina.

Why isn't he evacuating? Staying put (whether through choice or not) must be absolutely terrifying.

Florally · 08/10/2024 22:24

Have you seen the man in Tampa on his boat called ‘Lieutenant Dan’ who is refusing to leave his boat? So scary.

Peridot1 · 08/10/2024 22:27

It looks utterly terrifying. Praying it’s not as bad as feared. I saw the weather guy crying on a news report too.

Changingplace · 08/10/2024 22:28

unmemorableusername · 08/10/2024 18:35

I'm shocked this isn't bigger news in the uk. Thousands of uk tourists will be in Florida atm surely? Won't they be closing the Disney/universal resorts? Are the uk your companies flying people home????

It’s the top news story on both Sky and BBC and the coverage has said Disney and Universal are closing.

suburberphobe · 08/10/2024 22:32

It is the new reality.

Climate change. Happening all over the world.

Givemethesun · 08/10/2024 22:34

its absolutely shocking. They have said if you stay you will die. People who can’t evacuate can they not jump in with neighbours anybody?? Or is it a free for all?

DotPotato · 08/10/2024 22:35

spottedinthewilds · 08/10/2024 21:15

It looks awful. There are lots of videos of it on Insta.

I really hope it's not as strong as it's predicted. I understand it has already been downgraded to Cat 4.

Follow Reed Timmer on X and you’ll get best insight. Or type in Milton and you’ll find plenty of others.

It was briefly downgraded but is already back up to cat 5 again. It will weaken as it approaches shore (dry air) but that’s meaningless for the storm surge which is predicted to be 15ft, that’s what they’re most worried about. Plus all the debris that is still out on the street from last week’s hurricane.

For anyone who hasn’t seen storm surge before look at this video and watch the house.

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/10/2024 22:39

It must be terrifying for the people caught up in it and unable to get away for whatever reason. I was absolutely shitting myself during Storm Arwen a couple of years ago and that was nowhere near as bad as what Florida is facing now.

BurntBroccoli · 08/10/2024 22:39

Just watched the weather man in tears. This is going to be absolutely devastating.
Petrol is running out too so people can't evacuate.
