Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Speaking of the "kitties," to quote one poster whose name I will avoid mentioning, one of the nice things that came to light in all this, is that several hotel chains relaxed or waived their pet policies to shelter evacuees with animals. They actually likely saved lives (human, canine, and feline) by doing so; many people (me included) will not want to evacuate if they can't bring their pets.

That's so good of them.

It’s awful isn’t it 😔 I just saw on BBC someone has left their dog tied up on the side of road!! Poor little pip. Luckily they were rescued but even if you can’t save your animal why decrease its chance of survival in such a horrible way

I saw that poor wee fella with the flood water rising around it and had the same thought. If you really had no choice but to abandon your pet, you’d be better off leaving it to roam feel so it had a chance of running/swimming/seeking some sort of shelter. I was glad the police were trying to retrieve it, but they had their work cut out as the poor thing was (understandably) growling and barking at them.

Genuinely glad that everyone is safe (-2) and all the cats survived.

My brother, (lives in Florida coincidentally) did say that there was actually an overall reduction in fatalities compared to the same date in previous years, due to the mass evacuation, there wasn't much opportunity for gun crime last night.

Now.. once they've picked up the toppled crane and got the leaf blowers out.. likely their tourism is going to be more of a financial loss than anything else..

Such drama and hyperbole, everyone whipped into a frenzy.. weatherman crying..
I was amazed at all the mentions of my now cancelled Disney holiday.

Unfortunately not all of them were kind and I'd like to remind them that empathy works both ways, regardless of how trivial some may think my feelings were.. if they showed some empathy, they would have been able to understand a little of how I was feeling, while not feeling it diminished their own concerns or worries.

We've booked the Maldives so looks as though everything has worked out nicely, on the whole, for the vast majority concerned

Oh big woop. I am going to the moon. Beat that.
Can you?

Do us a favour and just shut up.

What an idiot you are. Who cares about your stupid holiday.

The Treasure Island Twitter account is very good and showing the damage there 💔

I haven't heard from my friend since yesterday but hopefully it's just because she's lost power like with the last hurricane

AgnesNaismith · 10/10/2024 15:29

It is monsoon season in the Maldives.

And cell phone service can be affected as well. My brother lost power, landline and cell phone service for nearly a week with Helene, and he wasn't even in the direct path of the storm.

Yeah that too. I'm going to try not to worry until it's been a few days, though was only 24 hours with Helene

I suggest we just ignore a certain poster.

@Natsku I really hope you get some good news soon ❤️

Waitingfordoggo · 10/10/2024 15:48

I agree @itwasnevermine. (Though I’m struggling to ignore ‘pouring over’ 😂)

itsgettingweird · 10/10/2024 15:59

My friend in Fort Myers has checked in and safe 😇

Mamanyt · 10/10/2024 03:39

Thank you, EVERYONE, who expressed concern for my son and his family in St. Peterburg, FL. I did get a text from him a couple of hours ago. His wife and their sons evacuated, and are safe. He stayed behind to keep an eye on their property, but was doing fine. The solar panels and backup battery are still intact, or were then. Nothing since, so, of course, I'm still worried.

So glad to hear that

It is monsoon season in the Maldives.

According to the weather forecast - heavy rain in the Maldives at least until next Wednesday

The weather is awful in October.

Florally · 10/10/2024 18:20

Also, probably not a popular opinion, but the Maldives was so boring 😅

Frozensnow · 10/10/2024 18:34

PuddlesPityParty · 10/10/2024 13:37

I’m actually not. You were trying to minimise the damage actually caused by Helene. I called you out on it. This poster is delusional - she didn’t have “vast majority” support. Her brother cannot know the toll of the current storm because the situation isn’t over and the impact from Helene still isn’t known so how could we possibly know? She’s been disgusting and distasteful and is now trying to bask in self righteousness when she has none. I don’t really care if you think “I’m beyond nasty” because neither of you seem to have a moral compass.

Edited

I think that @GingerMaineCoon and @fundsandfrolics are probably the same person on a wind up

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/10/2024 20:19

My friend and his brother have both checked in and are ok. They spent the night mopping up his place because of water ingress but not actual flooding, then fell asleep in that they were very tired as they stayed awake all night and then ‘kinda passed out’. One of his neighbours lost a big chunk of their roof.

I’m assuming that you’re joking? People have died, homes flooded, businesses destroyed but it’s a storm in a teacup?
