Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Don't be daft. That comment doesn't wish for more. Reports I've read in media use the same phrase.

Of course I'm sure she isn't. It's the standard way of reporting it. Just means we don't know if there are more, and in a storm like this it's possible.

itwasnevermine · 11/10/2024 07:16

Death toll now at 14 according to the independent 💔 I'm not a religious person but I'm praying for all those affected, I can't imagine how awful and scary it must be

MILLYmo0se · 11/10/2024 07:39

It's also possibly phrased that way in a reaction to the poster saying there were less fatalities that night than the same night last year as the those that would be shooting people/getting shot were caught up in the evacuation....... No one knows what the fatality numbers are yet

Honestly Milly (and everyone else) I'd just ignore the people trying to cause trouble on this thread. The fact that they'd do it on such a thread speaks volumes about their character

New fear unlocked right? Apparently it's quite rare for people in Florida to get attacked by them though. I guess they're careful about where they swim

Apparently they’re not as aggressive as crocodiles. They don’t tend to hunt humans, whereas crocodiles do.

Newsenmum · 11/10/2024 08:12

@fundsandfrolics um people have died and houses absolutely destroyed. Jesus.

My dad retired to Tampa- he initially thought he was far enough inland to avoid the surges etc but then on Monday he drove to around 6-7 petrol stations and none of them had petrol.
By that time he had used up most of his petrol and didn't have enough to look for more.
So he is stuck.
He has a generator and is planning on hunkering down. I feel sick with nerves.

Thanks to everyone who supported me- my dad ok. Lost power a couple of days ago but survived. Lots of water and trees down and they think it will be days until anyone can get in or out. They had a tree through the screen on the deck and water lapping but safe.

That water usually about a football field away

Peridot1 · 11/10/2024 08:35

Glad he is ok @MrsMitford3. And also every else’s relatives. I have a friend there too and thankfully she and her family are ok. Just without power.

I'm going to do a rare thing on mumsnet (and the internet in general) I'm going to apologize - Helene really did turn out worse than the stats I read and I wrongly thought you were being a little dramatic.

Thank you for stating where your facts came from - they're more credible sauces than mine

justasking111 · 11/10/2024 13:40

A flood on this scale is a disaster. I recall after ours driving on the A55 two months later acres of fields were still underwater. People many months away from returning home. B&Bs full of contractors, hiring plant and tools from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham.

It was an unholy mess.

I follow some
people online who were affected by Helene and it is devastating seeing what happened in their local areas 😭

Natsku · 12/10/2024 17:46

Still haven't heard from my friend, really starting to worry now.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/10/2024 17:50

I have my fingers crossed for them, Natsku. And indeed for everyone still out of contact while I am at it, but especially for your friend, just because.

Natsku · 13/10/2024 07:29

Finally heard, not directly from her but via someone else that she is ok, has power back, but no internet yet, hence not hearing from her. So relieved.

Glittertwins · 13/10/2024 08:54

Good news @Natsku

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/10/2024 12:14

I'm very glad of this news, and that you can now stop being anxious for her.
