Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

If anyone is interested in live webcams there are some here:

There's still idiots going and standing by the Southernmost Point marker in Key West (and nearly getting swept away)

@SpiderRemedy I was just watching them... unbelievable ! Anything for a selfie 😳

We don’t know anymore living there but I hope everyone who stays remains safe.

Just watched clips of people with young kids getting supplies to try ride out this storm. I can't help but feel they are in denial. This is the biggest hurricane to hit in over 100 years. At best they are going to lose power for weeks.

I don’t think they’re in denial per say, but fuel stations are empty and roads are grid locked, and some have decided that is better to stock up than be stuck with their family on the road. It’s extremely worrying either way

RitaIncognita · 09/10/2024 16:15

The shelter situation in Florida is very different from what was done in Katrina with the Superdome, but maybe we need to do more education about that.
Shelters tend to be in schools and similar type buildings that have been set up and staffed to fill the needs of people in that particular shelter. It's not a particularly pleasant experience sharing space with lots of people and sleeping on cots and sleeping bags, but it is far better than being in a flooded house.

I find the Mayor's "evacuated or die" message a bit OTT and as though he thinks he's in a Hollywood film. Yes, there will be dozens/hundreds of deaths but MOST people who don't evacute will survive.
One thing I have noticed is that the authorities have said just driving 20 miles out and waiting would be enough but there are scenes of people filling trucks with multiple jerry cans preparing to drive hundreds of miles away, causing jams and hogging the fuel. People such as the mayor have caused too much panic.

Haven't yet rtft so someone else might have mentioned this already, so apologies if they have.

When the power goes off it could be some time before it is fixed, and the only electricity will be via generators, and that is probably what the fuel in the jerry cans will be for. It might also come in handy for people with trucks and 4x4s who can lend their vehicles to help in the relief effort.

Our relatives are in Asheville NC, and a lot of people in the area are still relying on diesel generators after Helene.

Yes I really feel for those barely recovering from the last storm. I've noticed the storms here getting more intense but thank goodness it's nothing like the USA!

We have booked tickets for Disney World and absolutely distraught that we might have to cancel plans on a much looked forward to holiday. Our kids were in tears this evening..

For those in a similar position, I've looked up some of the terms and conditions.

We will be looking for a refund as from the news reports, I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few of the rides won't be operating for a while.

I really hope you are joking. No one can be this selfishly wrapped up in themselves can they ?

Onlyonekenobe · 09/10/2024 16:31

I was just looking at some of the satellite images and noticed that Milton and the storm brewing off the east coast of FL are both rotating counter-clockwise. Looked it up and apparently north of the equator they do always rotate counter-clockwise and are called hurricanes; south of the equator they rotate clockwise and are called cyclones.

I have family in the Orlando region, who (amazingly) cut their holidays short and flew down there YESTERDAY to be at home. Airport is shut now so lord only knows how much they paid for their flights. No mandatory evacuation alert for Orlando, but still. Can't wrap my head around it. But I think it's a "better to suffer through it at home than come home to an unknown disaster" mentality. Not one I'd adopt, to me it's only things. But there you go.

Portugal has been lashed by a tropical storm. 300000 without power. Trees down everywhere.

We've been lucky so far.

Mademetoxic · 09/10/2024 16:36

Hopefully someone is there with them :)

I honestly don't think I've ever seen such a tone deaf, entitled post in many years of using mumsnet.
People are going to lose their homes, jobs, and in some cases their lives. Maybe have a think about that and reevaluate just how distraught you are.

CaveMum · 09/10/2024 16:39

We went to Disney earlier this year so I’m still on a lot of “Disney Holiday” Facebook pages. Lots of people saying Disney is one of the safest places to be (in a hotel that is) - the hotels are all built to withstand Category 5 storms, they provide emergency packages of food/water/etc to every room before the storms hit. The parks are closing at 2pm local time today to allow people time to get back to their hotels and staff to get home. Disney has its own electrical grid, etc so will not be affected by power outages.

I’ve seen it said that locals often book themselves into the cheapest Disney hotels when a big storm comes in as they know it’s one of the safest places to be.

I have a friend (Canadian) who is out in Orlando on holiday at the moment. Her hotel (not a Disney one) have reassured guests that they’ve forward planned for this and it will be a case of staying in rooms/within the hotel building for about 24 hours to ride it out.

Why do Americans give storms human names?

We do that in this country as do lots of other countries. It's not unique to America. Every year the met office publishes the list of storm names for that season.

Jesus Christ.......

You may think these thoughts but honestly, would anyone in their right mind actually post them with an imminent disaster about to occur? It would be different if you didn't know what was about to happen out there but we can ALL see what devastation is going to occur over the following hours. Quite a breathtakingly selfish comment in a veritable sea of concern and distress.

It feels kind of wrong watching because I keep thinking someone is going to end up in the sea.

emilysquest · 09/10/2024 16:49

Your kids are "distraught" about their holiday, and that is your concern about this storm? Get a grip ffs. People are going to die, lose their homes, livelihoods etc. Maybe explain that to your kids and how lucky they are that they aren't going to be dying or see their home destroyed. Hopefully they won't grow up to be like you.

LifeExperience · 09/10/2024 16:50

Yes, hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere. I'm on the east coast of Florida, and the rain is coming from the east even though the hurricane is to the west. After the eye passes (almost directly over my house if the current track holds) that motion will reverse.

I saw this too. Absolute idiots.

LifeExperience · 09/10/2024 16:52

Just realized I didn't explain that well. The hurricane's spiral motion won't change, but once the eye passes, the rain and wind will come from the west.

I can imagine they're concerned about not being able to return for weeks depending on damage (although if the damage ends up being a bad as predicted, I'm not sure I'd want to be there either!)
I was in a different part of the US during Helene. It sounded devastating, so I can understand wanting to be home if not under evacuation.

Lunde · 09/10/2024 16:57

Just saw there is currently a tornado that has touched down in the Everglades ahead of the hurricane.
