....And America and U.K. planes playing chases in circles! Wish something would fly over me. Love a military plane.

larklane17 · 03/10/2024 23:04

I'm North West so it's all Ryan Air over here - much more exciting over the other side and out towards the North Sea. Although I can still see the RAF GRFFfN39 Airbus going round Campbeltown.
Ooh. This is much more interesting than Question Time!

Adatewithmyself · 03/10/2024 23:42

What is this one, what would it be doing? Is this something like the foreign office?

It’s followed by an RAF plane too

Would be interesting to see who else dropped in if I could stay awake. We need a night watch person

That same one was doing loops over the Suffolk/Norfolk border last night!

POTC · 04/10/2024 00:36

Two things -
Have you always been able to see the airport vehicles on the map? I've never noticed them before!
Does anyone else look at the map and see a huge blank space above their area and rather than assuming it just means there's a quiet spell, instead assume it means the local air bases (we have several UK and 2 US nearby) are up to something that means no one else is allowed in the airspace?!

POTC · 04/10/2024 00:43

I saw there was discussion about the USAF refuelling planes being around on Wednesday night. They come from various other bases across the UK to do drills and practice refuelling runs with the USAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath crews on a very regular basis, at least once a week I sit and watch their loops on flightradar as they go very noisy over my house repeatedly for a few hours 🤣

justasking111 · 04/10/2024 01:10

A flight from Kuwait winked out of sight over Jerusalem a few minutes ago.

What are we looking for? Not sure how to read flight radar. How do you know what type of plane? Or that there are more military ones than usual?

It was the night before you posted - there was what looked like a joint exercise down the eastern seaboard with loads of military aircraft taking part.

Someone mentioned FORTE13. I'm sure that was circling in the Black Sea earlier in the Ukrainian conflict. It might still do now, I just don't look as often. I found out a colleague also watches things on Flightradar. We call it international curtain-twitching.

BlueFlowers5 · 04/10/2024 06:15

OP you live near a training area for both UK and US military. Over the marshes they allegedly use live fire.

Vehicles: Been visible for some time. Some vehicles, not all, at a few airports, not all, are set up to ping their position to ATC. Allows for operations in bad visibility when ATC are monitoring ground movement by radar.

And yes, big clear areas on map over the North Sea on nights like last night is quite possibly down to areas where stuff is going on that is not for public consumption.
