Anyone watching? There's a weird plane just south of Oxford making a very pretty pattern. No idea what it's doing. PHRVS going East/west south of Oxford.

Oh wow that is unusual

iamsoshocked · 17/10/2024 23:14

What on earth can it be doing?

PoorOldGonville · 17/10/2024 23:26

There’s another similar survey flight going on to the south as well, over the Downs. Doing the same east-west runs SEMNN

justasking111 · 17/10/2024 23:57

New reservoir?

justasking111 · 18/10/2024 00:08

The plane is owned by this company

Why would they do surveying flights at night? Is there less optical interference if they're doing lidar or something?Confused

justasking111 · 18/10/2024 08:29

Ground penetrating Geo. You don't need light for that. The oil industry use drones 24/7 now rather than research ships. Which is why I suggested the reservoir which has been on the cards for a long time now.

Off Aberdeen and around helicopters like wasps around a jam jar. Presume to do with the oil industry

I'd think so.
And it's evidently a good day for gliding in Northumberland

We're in Suffolk and go through phases of this kind of activity. As far as I'm aware, it's exercises. Been years and years of the same kind of patterns with no other real excitement to it.
Although once a chinook did carry a jeep on a winch over the house - that was cool.

We went to CP in Suffolk in 2023. Ds who loves a bit of plane spotting was in his element and I was enjoying RL fight radar for the week 😂

PauliesWalnuts · 21/10/2024 22:01

Christ, two US Ospreys clattering around above me in North Mcr tonight and making a hell of a noise. It’s bloody 10pm!

YorkieTheRabbit · 21/10/2024 22:05

@PauliesWalnuts We’re in West Yorkshire, they flew over our house and made the windows vibrate

Ace - I watched them go over Hebden Bridge and Tod at only around 2,000 feet high 😮

PauliesWalnuts · 21/10/2024 22:19

Jesus @hoteltango it pulled up that helipad like it was a bit of old carpet! No longer on Flight Radar so no idea where they went.

justasking111 · 24/10/2024 20:22

For info RAF Valley (“VLY”) has for many many decades been a major RAF pilot training base, it’s always been busy to a greater or lessor extent.

I do know that, live locally was just adding a little detail to the thread 🙄

notimagain · 25/10/2024 16:13

Fair enough, not intending to cause offense but I was just trying to provide some info for those without the local knowledge might be puzzelled as to why the RAF were quite so busy around Angelsey..
